<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 24

Love and Jealousy

Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee.

Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned. (Song of Songs 8:5-7 KJV)

(Sermon)

It can be said that while we speak of God's love like a habit, we are far from the idea that love makes us live. It is not just about living in the flesh and enjoying the pleasures of the world. This is to tell you whether you live as a person whose thoughts and standards toward you have changed because if you don't know God's love and don't receive it, no one's thoughts or standards toward oneself will change.

Every human being thinks of himself according to his own standards. So, even though he says he is a sinner, he doesn't think of himself as a sinner, but on the basis of his religious life or good deeds. However, with such thoughts, it is impossible for us to know the gratitude of the love God shared with sinners. It can be said that it is because they are falling into the illusion that God loves them because they have good faith to be loved by God. This can be said to be the reason why people say they love and receive love, yet they are ignorant of the inner story of life and the power of love.

Verse 6 says, “Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.”

It could be said that the Shulammite woman said, ‘Love is as strong as death’. This is by no means a general expression of the strength of love. This is because the strength of love can almost be expressed in the words 'love is stronger than death'. The fact that I cannot give up on the one I love even if I die is interpreted as the power of love that makes death not afraid. Resurrection can also be expressed as a love stronger than death because the resurrection from the dead is the power that overcomes death.

But she says that love is as strong as death. This is because the strength of love is compared to the strength of death. In order to know the strength of love, we must first understand what can be said to be strong in death.

So, what can be called the strength of death? Death renders everything we have to nothing. Death is the disappearance of even the body and the cutting off from everything it had when it existed in the world. It makes neither the pride of the flesh nor the pride of possessions meaningless.

Thinking of this as the strength of death, the strength of love can be interpreted as meaningless everything in the flesh that we valued and boasted about. It takes away everything we hold on to and refuses to let go, and leaves us nothing to brag about.

However, we want to interpret God's love as an extension of our present enjoyment. If God loves us, we are mistakenly thinking that He will be happy and fill us with what we want. Because we misunderstand love in this way, we cannot realize God's love. It is because they we our present is not enjoyable.

However, it should be borne in mind that love does not appear as an enlargement of possessions, but as a confession of the unworthiness of possessions because of the value and dignity of love because it is a clear fact that you cannot enter heaven with the mindset of confirming love on the basis of possessions.

But the woman speaks of jealousy as well as love. Jealousy is cruel as the grave, it rises like flames, and its force is like the fire of the LORD. We take the word jealousy negatively. Perhaps it is because the word jealousy has the meaning of envying, demeaning, and blaming others for the good things they do.

Yet, the jealousy that accompanies love is essential to confirm and testify to a loving relationship. If there is no jealousy towards the object of love, can it be called love? If the person you love has a crush on another person, but is not jealous, then it is clear that you do not love that person. That is why God's love must also appear along with jealousy.

Deuteronomy 4:24 says, “The LORD your God is a consuming fire and a jealous God.” Deuteronomy 6:15, Joshua 24:19, and Na 1:2 also proclaim God as a jealous God. It means that a jealous God will not allow the person whom He gave His love to have another love.

In other words, He does not deprive another love of His own person whom God has chosen and given love. This is God's love. If death never deprives the person under death and leads to death is strong, God's love also shows strength by not depriving one's own person by other love.

The woman surrenders herself to the strength of his love. It is expressed by saying that he should hold her in his heart like a seal and put her on his arm like a seal. It's not about setting her heart on a happy life where she can receive love and enjoy the bridegroom's wealth, but set hope only on a relationship that will never be erased from the bridegroom's heart.

Verse 7 says, “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.”

She knew that the love of her husband was as strong as death. Thus, that love is not quenched by many waters and floods, nor is it swallowed up. When we stand before many waters and floods, we are in fear and terror, but love cannot be quenched and swallowed up. Consider that Christ came to us with this love. It means that the person of the Lord who is called in the love of Christ is in a relationship of love that is not broken even by many waters and floods.

When you come to know love, you realize that love that gives you what you want is not love. You also learn that your zeal to beautify yourself in order to be loved was to despise love. Trying to get love by doing what the groom likes is in itself not compatible with love.

Even if we give all we have, it cannot be exchanged for love. However, if you try to receive love by using your shallow religious life or goodness as a tool, you will only be despised by love. In that way, we are the object of wrath that should have been consumed by the fire of the Lord. It is the love of the Lord that pushes us to the cross until the end. Therefore, we just confess, 'All we need is the love that the Lord has given us'!
