<설교>

Chapter 1

The Proverbs of Solomon

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. (Proverbs 1:1-6 KJV)

(Sermon)

It is easy to see that the theme of the Song of Songs is love, because it is so focused on love that the word love is mentioned the most in the Bible. In that regard, the book of Proverbs may feel ambiguous on any one subject because it feels strongly that Proverbs is a lesson and culture that teaches what is necessary and useful in the life of the world, rather than a single topic. For this reason, Proverbs is also a reality that is being interpreted with more distortion and misunderstanding than any other Bible.

However, what Proverbs is about is evident at the beginning and end of the Book. As Verse 7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Solomon's proverb is based on the fear of the Lord. Teaching what it is to fear the Lord is the subject of Proverbs.

And this is what Proverbs can also be confirmed by ending in Proverbs 31:30-31, saying, “Fine is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but the woman who fears the Lord will be praised, and the fruit of her hand shall be hers, and her deeds will be praised in the gates.”

In this way, people do not think that the theme of Proverbs is the fear of the Lord, so they treat each sentence as a separate one, and in the end, they distort it and interpret it like a guide to life. This is what we need to be careful about when dealing with Solomon's proverbs. Proverbs is not a textbook to instruct us, nor a guide for life. However, this is also another reason why Proverbs is difficult to understand. Most of the content seems to have nothing to do with the fear of the Lord.

For example, in Proverbs 15:22, “Where there is no counsel, management is ruined, but if there is a lot of resourcefulness, there is success.” What does fear of the Lord have to do with it? We do know that if you are a person who runs a company, discussing with several people is more beneficial to management than deciding everything arbitrarily. There is nothing special about wisdom. It is something that almost everyone knows and acknowledges, regardless of their beliefs. It is difficult to see this from the perspective of faith and interpret it as wisdom that the world does not know.

In 15:1, it says, “A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up anger”, which does sound what the world teaches as well.

In Proverbs 24:16, it says, “For though the righteous shall fall seven times, he will rise again, but the wicked fall because of calamity.” We use a maxim, ‘a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again’ with the verse, implying, ‘God makes the believers continue to rise again after many falls’, but there is no such God in the Bible. It can be said that it is the joy of learning from Proverbs that how our misunderstandings turn out to be the knowledge of the fear of God.

The book of Proverbs begins with the words, “The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel.” And the purpose of the proverbs is to make known wisdom and instruction, to understand the words of understanding, to be instructed in the things to do wisely, justly, and honestly, to make the fool prudent, and to give knowledge and soberness to the young. This is clearly stated in verses 2-4.

However, there is an important fact that we must not miss in this passage. That is, the proverb begins with denying all that belongs to us. The phrase ‘to make known wisdom and instruction’ means we do not know wisdom and instruction. Proverbs are given to make known to those who do not know wisdom and instruction. It doesn’t mean to add the wisdom and admonition of Proverbs to the wisdom and admonition we already have.

The wisdom and admonition of Proverbs are the Word from God. Wisdom and admonition from God cannot match what we know. Rather, the wisdom and precepts of Proverbs displace what we already know. This is the meaning of the word 'to make known'.

And the saying ‘To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity’ also denies what we practice the Word in pride is nothing but meaningless. What we consider to be an act of faith is not an act of wisdom, justice, judgement, or equity. This is the meaning behind the phrase 'receive the instruction.’ It is because the word, ‘instruction’, that is, the work to be done, denies all that we acknowledge as works of faith.

Proverbs is said to be neither precept nor culture. If Proverbs were given as instruction and culture, we would do our best to guard and practice them. And you should be disciplined for what to do and what not to do. The purpose of such admonition is to keep it and do it, but God does not give such admonition. In that sense, we can’t help acknowledging we are ignorant of God's instruction.

However, if we do our best to do our best even if we can't fully practice the contents of the Proverbs, wouldn't it have the effect of displaying the image of a beautiful believer anyway? And shouldn't it be said to be the fear of the Lord? To avoid these misunderstandings, let's look at the conclusion of Proverbs first.

Proverbs ends with the words in 31:30-31, saying, “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”

It is said that favor is deceitful and the beautiful is vain. They do their best to obey God's Word, and even if they are beautiful in their outward appearances through their actions, they are false and vain because there is no such thing that we enter the kingdom of heaven by our zealous deeds.

In this regard, the conclusion of Proverbs is the same as the conclusion of Ecclesiastes, which says, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13) and it is also consistent with the conclusion of the Song of Songs, the appeal to the beloved to run to her.

It is so that it begins with wisdom and love from heaven, not ourselves. This is the faith that fears the Lord. Thus, if you understand the Proverbs and parables, the words of the wise, and their subtle words, your starting point will be different. This is what the Solomon's Proverbs is guiding us to, the cross!
