<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 143

Rest

Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.

And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end.

Thrice in the year shall all your men children appear before the LORD God, the God of Israel.

For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the LORD thy God thrice in the year. (Exodus 34:21-24 KJV)

(Sermon)

The Bible is the Word of God, centering the truth that we are saved by believing in Jesus Christ, the Substitute, dying on the cross for our sins. Thus, the more we learn the Bible, the more we know who He is by faith. Most christians wouldn’t deny the statement. Then, all christians should be living by faith. Yet, the reality is far from it because we all show our living not even close to be called faith at all. Why is it so?

Most of all, it is because there is no existence of the correct comprehension and interpretation of the Bible, which bring us to Christ Jesus. Yet, since the direction of the understanding of the Bible is toward men’s own benefits, not the glory of God, there is no way of faith. Without facing such reality, one wouldn’t walk by faith even if one much talks about faith and the gospel.

To interpret the Bible correctly, we mustn’t mingle with our desire, morality or religious mind. Yet, people would prefer their own happiness through church life to knowing Christ through learning the Word of God. They would use such life for enhancing the quality of life and satisfying the feeling of achievement.

Is it possible for one to interpret the Bible in a right manner before such people? It would be impossible unless one only thought of God’s will, disregarding men’s thoughts. In this sense, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that christians in the modern Christianity blaspheme the Word of God, preaching and listening to the gospel for men’s sake.

In Verse 21, it says, “Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.”

We would easily understand the verse as the meaning that Israel should keep the Sabbath day. Of course, it is the law of Sabbath. Yet, it is a problem for us to look it over as one of the rituals without knowing why the Israelites ought to rest on the seventh day while they keep the feast of Passover, the feast of Weeks, and the feast of Ingathering.

In Verses 22 and 23, it says, “And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end. Thrice in the year shall all your men children appear before the LORD God, the God of Israel.”

Yet, we can see, ‘And none shall appear before me empty’ in Verse 20. They should have no empty hand as coming to God, but God says to rest on the seventh day after six working days. They have to work in order to bring something to God on the sabbath day. Then, Does it mean they bring God the things they’ve earned for the past six days?

The confusion of the verse comes from focusing on resting only without thinking of why God says to rest on the seventh day, which the people of Israel did. The modern Christianity does the same, only replacing the sabbath day with the Lord’s day.

Then, can we keep the Word of God, ‘rest’? If it is ‘no working’, it’s not impossible to keep. Yet, they mustn’t work when they need to plow and harvest. Timings are important for agriculture. There are different works between sunny days and rainy days. Following the right timings prevent from big losses. The work of the past six days would go waste due to the incorrect timings.

Thus, one would not easily be able to rest unless one gives up on the labor and achievement for the past six days. Even if one rests physically, one worries about not being able to plow and harvest, which is breaking the law of the Sabbath day. Then, it is obvious that we can’t obey the Word of God since we would value our work for six days.

Those emphasizing on the observation of the Lord’s day say God will pay back the losses they have. For example, they say God will bring customers twice as much on Monday for business christians who close their stores on Sundays, which tells us people in the modern Christianity worship God as an idol.

If God were to make up the losses due to closing business on Sundays, it would mean the income for six days is ours. It would also be that working six days is for our piling up riches. Then, ‘rest’ would be a way to take care of health after six days of hard working.

People in the world value others with possessions and discriminate them accordingly. The possessions vary depending on the amount of labor for six days. I’m saying all work for life and have different amounts of possessions with different jobs. As a result, there are the haves and the have-nots in the world. In such world, God says to rest, differentiating Israel from the rest.

In Verse 18, it says, “The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib: for in the month Abib thou camest out from Egypt.”

I have already told you ‘coming out of Egypt’ doesn’t merely mean emancipation. ‘Egypt’ symbolizes the world. Therefore, it means God brought them out of the world, more specifically ‘the way of the world’, and called them as the people of God who walk in a new way, the nation of God. What’s more, we should remember that the law of Sabbath day is given to teach us such way of life.

What is the purport of the law of Sabbath? We can see that in God’s command that all men are to see God thrice a year, resting on the sabbath. Resting means no work and no work means no possession, showing us they are still considered the people of God even though they are empty-handed.

This is what we misunderstand. We think God would be pleased with things we got from our hard work. We also believe we can strengthen the relationship with God with our serving others at churches.

In a nutshell, our misconception is that the relationship with God depends on our works and efforts, resulting in salvation and blessings. This is believing in ourselves and the way of the world, worshipping their gods. Although Israel got out of Egypt, they still lived in the same way of life.

In the Book of Romans 4:6-8, it says, “Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.”

It is the world of God that one is deemed righteous even though one has no works. Such world is the world of Jesus Christ, dying on the cross. Thus, the life of faith, obeying the Word of God, ‘rest’, is to rest. Knowing the meaning of ‘rest’ and being free is the world of faith.

Such rest doesn’t mean no movement of body. It is to believe in the truth that all the work is finished by Jesus on the cross, not adding any work of ours. It is the same reason why God tells men of Israel to come to God three times a year, meaning they ought to remember they live by the blood of the lamb, not by their own labor. This is what the faith, believing in the cross of Jesus Christ, is teaching!
