30.아론과 온 이스라엘 자손이 모세를 볼 때에 모세의 얼굴 피부에 광채가 남을 보고 그에게 가까이 하기를 두려워하더니
31.모세가 그들을 부르매 아론과 회중의 모든 어른이 모세에게로 오고 모세가 그들과 말하니
32.그 후에야 온 이스라엘 자손이 가까이 오는지라 모세가 여호와께서 시내 산에서 자기에게 이르신 말씀을 다 그들에게 명령하고
33.모세가 그들에게 말하기를 마치고 수건으로 자기 얼굴을 가렸더라
34.그러나 모세가 여호와 앞에 들어가서 함께 말할 때에는 나오기까지 수건을 벗고 있다가 나와서는 그 명령하신 일을 이스라엘 자손에게 전하며
35.이스라엘 자손이 모세의 얼굴의 광채를 보므로 모세가 여호와께 말하러 들어가기까지 다시 수건으로 자기 얼굴을 가렸더라

사람들이 기본적으로 생각하는 신앙생활은 매우 간단합니다. 하나님이 주신 말씀대로 살면 구원과 복이 된다고 생각하기 때문입니다. 이것이 신앙생활에 대한 일반적인 이해일 것입니다. 여기에는 인간이 하나님의 말씀대로 살 수 없다는 사실은 무시됩니다. 그리고 믿음이 말씀을 실천하게 하는 능력이 된다며 예수를 믿는 자신에게 가능성을 두며 말씀을 실천하고 말씀대로 사는 것을 믿음이 있는 증거로 여깁니다.
모세는 시내산에서 사십 일 사십 야를 떡도 먹지 않고 물도 마시지 않으며 여호와와 함께 있었습니다. 그리고 하나님께 증거의 두 판을 들고 산에서 내려오는데 얼굴 피부에 광채가 납니다. 고후 3:7절의 “돌에 써서 새긴 죽게 하는 율법 조문의 직분도 영광이 있어 이스라엘 자손들은 모세의 얼굴의 없어질 영광 때문에도 그 얼굴을 주목하지 못하였거든”라는 내용을 보면 바울은 모세 얼굴의 광채를 영광으로 표현했습니다. 모세가 하나님의 영광을 입은 자로 산에서 내려오는 것입니다.
과연 무엇 때문에 모세가 하나님의 영광을 입었을까요? 말씀드린 것처럼 우리가 기본적으로 생각하는 신앙생활을 근거로 한다면 모세가 하나님의 말씀을 실천하고 말씀대로 살았어야 합니다. 다시 말해서 영광이 될 만한 행위가 있어야 한다는 것입니다.
모세가 산에서 한 것은 사십일 동안 먹지도 마시지도 않은 것이 전부입니다. 이것이 영광을 입은 이유일까요? 어떤 사람은 사십 일 동안 먹지도 마시지도 않은 것을 금식기도 한 것으로 말하지만 설령 금식기도였을지라도 그것을 영광의 이유로 말할 수는 없습니다. 왜냐하면 금식기도는 영광과 구원의 능력일 수 없기 때문입니다.
모세가 하나님의 부름을 받고 시내산에 올라간 횟수는 여덟 번이라고 합니다. “모세가 하나님 앞에 올라가니 여호와께서 산에서 그를 불러 말씀하시되 너는 이같이 야곱의 집에 말하고 이스라엘 자손들에게 말하라”(출 19:3)는 말씀으로 시작하여 19장에서만도 세 번 산에 올라갔다 내려온 것으로 되어있습니다.
그리고 시내산에서 40일 동안 있었던 것은 두 번입니다.“모세는 구름 속으로 들어가서 산 위에 올랐으며 모세가 사십 일 사십 야를 산에 있으니라”(출 24:18)는 말씀처럼 처음 돌판을 받기 위해 올라가서 사십 일을 있었고, 깨어진 돌판 대신 두 번째 돌판을 받기 위해 올라가서 역시 사십 일 동안 있었습니다. 그토록 여러 번 산에 올라갔다 내려오기를 반복하였지만 한 번도 얼굴에 광채가 난 적이 없습니다. 처음 돌판을 들고 내려올 때도 사십일을 산에 있었지만 광채가 나지 않았습니다. 이것은 돌판도 사십일이라는 기간도 얼굴의 광채와는 무관하다는 뜻입니다.
모세가 얼굴의 광채와 함께 산에서 내려옴으로 광채는 산 아래 이스라엘을 비추게 됩니다. “이스라엘 자손이 모세의 얼굴의 광채를 보므로 모세가 여호와께 말하러 들어가기까지 다시 수건으로 자기 얼굴을 가렸더라”(35절)는 말씀처럼 이스라엘이 모세의 광채와 함께하게 된 것입니다.
그러면 광채는 누구를 향한다고 할 수 있을까요? 모세가 영광스러운 존재임을 나타내기 위한 광채가 아니라 이스라엘을 하나님의 영광에 참여한 자로 만들기 위한 광채입니다. 애굽에서 먹었던 것을 그리워하며 모세를 원망하고 자기를 위한 송아지를 만들어 하나님으로 섬기며 육신의 미래를 보장받고 싶었던 이스라엘이 영광에 참여하는 길은 세상 어디에도 없습니다. 결국 산에서 여호와와 함께했던 모세가 산 아래의 세상으로 내려올 때 있었던 얼굴의 광채가 영광에 참여하는 비밀이고 길이 되는 것입니다.
따라서 모세의 광채를 통해서 우리가 분명히 알고 있어야 하는 것은 인간의 열심과 믿음이 공로와 의로움이 되어 하나님의 영광에 함께 하게 되는 것은 없다는 것입니다. 그것은 인간이 고안한 상상이며 자기 구원에 대한 환상일 뿐입니다. 그런데 현대 교회가 그러한 종교적 환상에 매몰된 채 존재하지 않는 환상만 좇는 것이 성경을 통해서 확인할 수 있는 사실임을 알아야 합니다. 그래서 하나님의 말씀은 우리를 환상에서 벗어나게 하여 참된 진리의 세계로 데려가는 것입니다.
그런데 처음 돌판이 아닌 두 번째 돌판을 들고 내려올 때 얼굴에 광채가 난 이유는 어떻게 이해해야 할까요? 돌판에 기록된 말씀은 같습니다. 돌판을 들고 내려온 사람도 모두 모세입니다. 모세에게 다른 변화가 있었던 것도 아닙니다. 처음 돌판과 두 번째 돌판 때의 모세가 다르지 않다는 것입니다. 그런데도 유독 두 번째 돌판을 들고 내려올 때 광채가 난 것은 말씀이 주어지는 의미가 다르기 때문입니다.
처음의 돌판은 모세가 깨뜨렸고 두 번째 돌판은 언약궤에 보관됩니다. 모세가 돌판을 깨뜨린 것은 이스라엘이 금으로 송아지를 만들어 섬긴 일 때문임을 아실 것입니다. 하지만 모세가 화만 내는 것이 아니라 굳이 돌판까지 깨뜨린 이유가 무엇일까요? 돌판이 깨진 것은 아무 의미가 없습니다. 돌판 자체가 거룩하다거나 귀한 것은 아니기 때문입니다. 중요한 것은 돌판에 기록된 말씀이 깨어진 것입니다. 이것이 모세가 의도한 것입니다.
돌판에 기록된 십계명에는 자기를 위하여 우상을 만들지 말고 어떤 형상도 만들지 말라는 내용이 있습니다(출 20:4). 그리고 또다시 “너희는 나를 비겨서 은으로나 금으로나 너희를 위하여 신상을 만들지 말고”(출 20:23)라고 말씀합니다. 이 말씀을 들고 내려올 때 이스라엘은 금으로 송아지라는 형상을 만들어 하나님으로 섬기고 있었습니다. 따라서 이스라엘이 모세가 들고 온 말씀을 만나게 되면 그들은 심판을 받아 죽어야 합니다. 이것을 생각하면 돌판을 깨뜨린 것은 이스라엘이 말씀을 만나게 되는 것을 피하기 위해서라고 할 수 있습니다.
하지만 말씀이 없다고 해서 심판을 피할 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. 율법이 없었던 노아 시대에도 물로 심판을 받았습니다. 율법과 무관한 이방인도 심판을 받습니다. 때문에, 돌판이 깨어진 것이 이스라엘이 사는 길은 아닙니다. 이것이 하나님이 두 번째 돌판을 주신 이유입니다. 두 번째 돌판이 언약궤에 보관되고 그 이에 희생 제물의 피가 뿌려짐으로써 죄 없는 제물의 피가 이스라엘의 죄를 덮는 하나님의 자비와 긍휼의 방식으로 이스라엘이 구원에 이르게 됨을 보여주시는 것입니다. 그렇다면 모세 얼굴의 광채는 돌판에 기록된 말씀에 담긴 하나님의 자비와 긍휼과 연관이 있습니다.
모세도 심판을 받아야 할 죄인의 존재일 뿐입니다. 그 말은 모세의 광채가 모세 자신의 의가 아닌 말씀에 담긴 하나님의 자비와 긍휼로 인한 것이라는 사실에 주목해야 한다는 것입니다. 다시 말해서 모세도 말씀의 혜택을 입은 자로 산에서 내려오는 것이고, 말씀에 의해서 하나님의 영광에 참여 됨을 이스라엘 백성들에게 보여주는 것입니다. 그리고 이 모든 내용이 말씀의 성취자로 오신 그리스도를 증거 하는 것입니다.
28절에서“모세가 여호와와 함께 사십 일 사십 야를 거기 있으면서 떡도 먹지 아니하였고 물도 마시지 아니하였으며 여호와께서는 언약의 말씀 곧 십계명을 그 판들에 기록하셨더라”고 말하는 것처럼 돌판의 말씀은 처음 돌판과 같은 십계명입니다.
두 번째 돌판의 십계명은 이스라엘이 말씀을 지키는 데 실패했음을 증거 하는 역할을 합니다. 죄를 알게 한다는 것입니다. 이것이 이스라엘이 잊지 않아야 할 자신의 실상이었던 것이고 그것을 돌판이 보관된 언약궤에 피를 뿌리며 자신들의 생명이 희생 제물의 피에 있음을 자각해야 했던 것입니다. 그리고 구원은 이 모든 일을 이루신 하나님의 긍휼과 자비하심에 있음을 알고 감사하는 것이 하나님의 영광에 참여하는 것입니다.
34장은 모세가 수건으로 자기 얼굴을 가렸다는 것으로 끝납니다. 그리고 다시 35장에서 안식일에 일하는 자는 죽이라는 말씀으로 이어지면서 성막에 대한 내용이 다시 언급됩니다. 이미 성막에 대한 말씀을 주셨는데 또다시 반복하는 이유가 무엇일까요? 그 중심에 모세 얼굴의 광채가 있습니다.
모세의 광채가 있기 전에는 단지 성막 자체를 거룩한 것으로 섬기게 됩니다. 하지만 광채가 있은 후에 성막은 말씀을 지키지 못한 실패자로 죽임을 받아야 하는 인간에게 참된 구원이 무엇인가를 선포하는 말씀으로 다가오게 됩니다. 장차 성전으로 오실 예수님에 대한 이야기에 여기에 담겨 있는 것입니다.
우리는 처음 돌판을 통해서 인간이 실패자라는 사실을 배우고, 두 번째 돌판을 통해서는 피로써 하나님의 모든 말씀을 이루시는 그리스도를 보게 됩니다. 이것이 세상이 알지 못하는 영광의 세계입니다. 그래서 신자는 그리스도를 믿는 것만으로 이미 영광 안에서 해와 같이 빛나는 자로 존재하는 것입니다. 이 믿음이 우리가 성공자라는 보장이 됩니다.
Chapter 146
The Shiny Face
And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.
And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.
And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them.
And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai.
And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face.
But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded.
And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him. (Exodus 34:29-35 KJV)

It might be easy to define the life of faith in our common thoughts, which is to receive the eternal life and blessings from God by obeying the Word of God. Yet, it ignores the fact that there is none to obey the Word of God. Furthermore, we would think the faith can make us obey the Word of God through the life, practicing things written in the Bible.
Moses was with the Lord for forty days and forty nights on the Mount Sinai, fasting. As he was coming down the mount, his face shone. According to Apostle Paul in 2nd Corinthians 3:7, “But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away”, he mentions the shiny face of Moses was the glory, saying Moses was in the glory of God.
Then, What made Moses be so? If we think it through what was spoken earlier, it should be the life of faith of Moses, obeying the Word of God. In other words, it could be his acts out toward the Word of God.
All that Moses did was fasting for forty days and nights. Does it cause the glory Moses was in? Although some say his fasting was the life of his prayer for forty days and nights, it still can’t cause the glory because the prayer in fasting can’t be the power of glory and salvation.
It seems that Moses went up to the mount eight times by God’s calling, started with Exodus 19:3, “And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel.” There are two more times in the same chapter.
Then, there are two times he stayed up on the mount for forty days: receiving the tablets for the first time and receiving the tablets for the second time, replacing the first ones that were broken. Nevertheless, there was none his face shone even after his first forty days stay, coming down with the tablets, meaning his shiny face is related to neither the tablets nor the forty days.
As he was coming down the mount, his face shone Israel, written in Verse 35, “And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.”
Then, who was the shiny face for? It is not for Moses but Israel, participating the glory of God. They had no way to participate in the glory of God since they were complaining against God for food, idolizing the golden calf, wishing to be guaranteed for the future of their fleshly life. In the end, the shiny face of Moses, who’d stayed with the Lord for forty days and nights, can be the way and the mystery, making the Israelites participants of the glory of God.
Thus, what we ought to learn from the face of Moses is that there is no way for our efforts or beliefs to make us righteous enough to participate in the glory of God. Those are our mere fantasy for salvation. Yet, we have to be able to find the fact through the Bible that the modern Christianity is being intoxicated, seeking for the non-existent thing like such fantasy. That’s why we can say the Word of God shatters it, leading us to the truth.
Now, how should we understand the part that his face shone at the second time, not the first he brought the tablets? The contents of both are the same and they are carried by the same person, Moses. There is no change in Moses either. Then, we can figure that there is a different meaning between the first and the second.
The first ones were broken by Moses and the second ones were contained in the ark. We remember the first ones were broken due to the idolatry of Israel. Then, why did Moses not only get angry but also break them? Since the tablet themselves were not holy or precious, there is no meaning of breaking the tablets. The thing is that the Word of God recorded on the tablets was broken. That’s the intention of Moses.
A part of what says on the tablets is not to make any graven images, in Exodus 20:4. In Exodus 20:23, it says again, “Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.” While Moses was carrying such contents down the mount, they were worshipping the golden calf, calling it their God. Thus, if they had encountered the Word of God, they should have died. Having that in mind, we could say that Moses’s breaking the tablets was to avoid that encounter.
However, the judgement of God couldn’t be stopped regardless of the existence of the tablets. In Noah’s time, having no law written on the tablets, there was the judgement of God, including all the gentiles, who had nothing to do with the law. Thus, breaking the tablets was not the way Israel could live. That’s why the second was given that the tablets were put in the ark, sprinkled with the sacrificial blood, covering the sins of the Israelites, speaking to us that God saves His people in His mercy and compassion. If so, we find that the shiny face of Moses is relevant to the mercy and compassion of God.
Moses is not exempt from the judgement of God either, meaning that we have to pay attention that the glory on the face of Moses is not of the righteousness of Moses but the mercy and compassion of God. In other words, Moses was also in the grace of God, telling Israel that he was participating in the glory of God by the Word. Furthermore, it teaches us that the event in today’s passage testifies Jesus Christ, the Fulfiller of the Word of God.
As Verse 28 says, “And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments”, the Word of God written on the tablets are the ten commandments like the first ones.
The second tablets testify that Israel failed to obey the Word of God, revealing their sin. This is their reality they mustn’t forget through the blood of the sacrifice sprinkled on the mercy seat of the ark. It is to be participants in the glory of God that we give thanks to God for His compassion in the salvation.
Chapter 34 ends with the statement that Moses put the vail upon his face, followed by Chapter 35, mentioning to kill those who work on sabbath day, followed by the contents of the tabernacle again. Why is the tabernacle repeated since it was given before? The stories of the tabernacle center the shiny face of Moses.
Before the face of Moses shone, Israel considered the tabernacle itself holy. Yet, after it, the tabernacle comes to them who deserve to be judged as the testimonial of the salvation of the Word of God. It foretells us Jesus Christ, the True Temple.
Through the first tablets, we learn we are failures, and through the second, we learn Jesus is the Fulfiller of the Word of God. This is the world of the glory of God, which is unknown to the world. That’s why believers are already shiny like the sun in the glory of God in faith, believing in Christ. Such faith is the evidence of our success!
