<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 147

The Holy Day

And Moses gathered all the congregation of the children of Israel together, and said unto them, These are the words which the LORD hath commanded, that ye should do them.

Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.

Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day. (Exodus 35:1-3 KJV)

(Sermon)

Moses, who came down from the Mount with the tablets of the Ten Commandments, speaks to the people of Israel of the sabbath day. It is not strange for him to ask them to keep the sabbath day since he received it from God, but there is something we can question about in depth.

First of all, the sabbath day was mentioned several times before. Then, why is it repeated now? It could be said that Moses emphasizes the importance of the day. Yet, if so, why not the other commandments since there is no difference in terms of importance? In this aspect, it is questionable that he is talking only about the sabbath day as he is holding all the ten commandments.

There is one more question in Verse 3, “Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.”

It is not an additional item to the prohibitions on the seventh day because it should have been mentioned in Chapter 20 if it were to keep the day. Thus, it is uttered according to ‘no work on that day’, meaning ‘lighting a fire’ is to break the day. Then, why is it recorded only here in the passage? Although it is significant to understand the sabbath day, not many christians are interested in this matter.

Jews, who interpret the Word of God literally, believe they observe the day by not going to work, closing their business, not cooking and so forth. Likewise, christians think they obey the Word of God by going to church instead of work in the presumptuous interpretation of the sabbath day, changed to the Lord’s day. Of course, their efforts are feeble compared to Jewish people, but it is the same manner that both Jews and christians interpret it literally.

There is another we should ask ourselves about. In Exodus 20:11, it tells us the reason of ‘no work on that day’ is “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

However, in the Book of Deuteronomy 5:15, it says, “And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.”

The reason, here, is that God brought them out of Egypt, the life of bondage. Only looking at this, could it be that the content of the sabbath day is changed because the two say the different things literally. That’s why we mustn’t interpret the Bible literally, including the sabbath.

The teachings of the modern Christianity such as keeping the Lord’s day, the tithes, and worship services are the results of the literal interpretation of the Bible. They are not even literal interpretation but modifications that preachers choose what they want from the bible to grow their power, money. It is undeniable that all are related to monetary purpose.

Moses says in Verse 2, “Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.”

If the seventh day is a holy day, what about the other six? If there is a holy day, it could mean there is unholy day as well. Then, does it mean the six days are not holy? If we keep the Lord’s day holy, we need to make sure the rest six days in terms of how to live. Should we consider them unholy?

We ought to consider on more. Even though it says the seventh day is the day that makes Israel holy, the other six days are more useful for them. There is no income on the sabbath day, so they can’t get any help for living. The seventh day is a day of worship, but it is not easy to understand that it is a holy day for the people of Israel because they can’t receive food for their living by worshipping God.

We can often hear that some say God replenishes our needs to make up ‘no work’ on Lord’s day. Yet, it is of our greed, not wanting to have losses. As we have been thinking of what has been said so far, we can conclude that the passage on the sabbath day is not merely of keeping it by resting.

The sabbath day and the other six days are differentiated by the matter of working. We work for our survival. The thing is that we would think our resting on the Lord’s day is a condition of receiving God’s blessings on the six days, assuming God would make our business go well if we keep the Lord’s day. We would interpret ‘it is a holy day for you’ as God would make us happy with our observation of the day. All are vain activities, not knowing the law of God.

That’s why Jesus also says in John 7:19, “Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?”

The sabbath day is a day of rest. God says it is a holy day for Israel because they can be participants of God’s holiness by resting. They are not different from the people of Egypt, who were killed by God. Thus, they can’t enter the holiness of God on their own but by God.

God says to Israel to rest because they are being led to the new world, not living on their own. That is the Promised Land. God says to put to death anyone who works on the sabbath day because it is the life of Egypt. One following the way of Egypt is considered the same as an Egyptian.

There is no rest in the life of Egypt. It doesn’t mean they don’t have resting days but they live by their own power, not the creation and guidance of God. Yet, we wouldn’t give up on the life of Egypt, shown that we are obsessed with our possessions. We consider the income from our work as ours. Therefore, even if we rest on the seventh day, we still break the law as we insist on what we have. Thus, no one can keep the sabbath day, seated on the death.

‘Kindle no fire’ means not to cook. Thus, the sabbath day is a day that we need no food, teaching us the six days when we are fed are not of food. Likewise, working six days is not of us either. Thus, the six days belong to the seventh day, resulting that all are holy days in the seventh day.

Nevertheless, considering the Lord’s day a holy day is to despise the grace of the Lord, who fulfilled all the laws on the cross. It is because we belong to the Lord Jesus, who is the Lord of Sabbath as the six days are holy days belonging to the sabbath day. Those who believe in such truth come to confess they live by what Christ has done, which means ‘no work’ and keeping the sabbath. Therefore, the cross of Jesus Christ is the new world that we live not by our labor and work but by His sacrifice and forgiveness!
