<설교>

Chapter 148

The Offerings With The Willing Heart

And all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses.

And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the LORD's offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments.

And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold: and every man that offered, offered an offering of gold unto the LORD.

And every man, with whom was found blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats' hair, and red skins of rams, and badgers' skins, brought them.

Every one that did offer an offering of silver and brass brought the LORD's offering: and every man, with whom was found shittim wood for any work of the service, brought it.

And all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen.

And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goats' hair.

And the rulers brought onyx stones, and stones to be set, for the ephod, and for the breastplate;

And spice, and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the sweet incense.

The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the LORD, every man and woman, whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work, which the LORD had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses. (Exodus 35:20-29 KJV)

(Sermon)

God commanded Moses to make the tabernacle (Chapter 31), and according to the command, the people bring the materials necessary to make the tabernacle and the various utensils used in the tabernacle. As it says, “And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the LORD's offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments.” (v. 21). It is because the heart was moved and volunteered.

When we see these things, we naturally come to focus on the attitude of giving offering to God, thinking God doesn’t unconditionally receive offerings and bless us but there is an offering received with joy. Therefore, the reason why God received Abel's sacrifice and not Cain's sacrifice is interpreted because the kind of sacrifice and the attitude of the person offering it are different.

In this way, we are interested in offering sacrifices that God accepts and is pleased with rather than instructing the Israelites to make a tabernacle. This is because we think that the act of giving becomes valuable by being pleased with God. Evaluating the act of giving to God as evidence of faith, and making a difference in faith by giving a lot and giving little is also based on the habit of evaluating and judging everything as being visible.

Of course, bringing in offerings to build the tabernacle has nothing to do with the architecture of church buildings today. Nevertheless, connecting the text to the building of the church is a spontaneous interpretation of the Bible in accordance with self-deprecation by a man who is not interested in God and the Bible but who cares only for himself.

Then, why do you think God commanded them to bring materials? In fact, if the Tabernacle is important, it would be more touching for God to make it by hand than to make it by human hands. Just as God has built the world in the Word and has made things that were not, the Word alone can make the tabernacle of the tabernacle as much as it has been. But we're going to have to think about why God is asking people to bring their own offerings and build them themselves.

If God had built the Tabernacle by the Word, what would the people of Israel have learned through the tabernacle? Perhaps they would have thought that the invisible God gave them the tabernacle to to help them in His dwelling. Then, it would have been no difference from the Golden Calf they’d made.

Instead, why did God command them to build the tabernacle? If it were the purpose of offerings, it would be possible without the tabernacle. They could have done it at any place. Yet, God didn’t want their offerings, vouched by Hosea 6:6, “For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.”

Then, was it to confirm their faith through bringing offerings? The verses deny it in Isaiah 1:11, “To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats”, and Psalm 50:8, “I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.”

According to Hosea, what God wants is not to sacrifice and offerings, but to be a God-knowing people in Israel. The tabernacle needs to be understood around the will of God. It is important to know how the presence of the tabernacle reveals God to them and what Israel must realize through the tabernacle.

Israel's history can be distinguished before and after Exodus. It is not distinguished from the history of slavery in Egypt and the history of freedom liberated from the identity of slaves, but by the history of the world of death, egypt, where the blood of the Lamb was rescued from death and started anew. And if the Battle of Exodus was a history where the tabernacle did not exist, then the tabernacle of them became the history with the tabernacle among them.

So what changes to the tabernacle? The purpose of the tabernacle is not in the act of giving offerings, but it is a sacrifice that is carried out repeatedly. The fact that the offering is not for the purpose of the tabernacle does not mean that the offering is meaningless but their act of offerings is not a sign of God's people and they never fulfilled their duty to be the people of God. Even so, why would they build a house called the Tabernacle and give offerings?

The priest is only allowed to enter the tabernacle. This is a place that is closed to the general public. The tabernacle discriminates between the inside and outside of the tabernacle, and what the people know is that they are unclean beings who cannot enter the holy place of the tabernacle. But without the Tabernacle, they would of course regard God as their God, who has served generations of their ancestors, and they would only know God in their own way. They themselves, who believe in God, do not know that they can’t come to God. This is the difference between having a tabernacle and not being there. So even if they are willing to bring offerings to make the tabernacle, it doesn’t mean they are saved.

Nevertheless, we would focus on their act that they were voluntary, thinking it is better with willingness than without it. So, we would like to say God is pleased with the offering with the willing heart, but that is the religious world created by human mind.

We usually interpret the touched heart as a movement of heart. While our heart is touched by the Word and interpreted as volunteering to make a donation and serve as we listen to the sermon, the problem is that the human mind changes from time to time, not as it is. So even if you decide to make a donation, the amount of money causes conflict.

These examples are the stories of Ananias and Sappira in Acts. In Chapter 4, as the apostles testify of Jesus' resurrection, the multitude receives great grace and sells fields and houses to bring them to the Apostles. Ananias and Sappbie were probably one of them. When they heard the testimony of the resurrection from the Apostle, they were gracious and touched, and they tried to sell possessions like others to bring them to the Apostle, but they hid some. It's not the heart of the company when they decided to sell their possessions and dedicate it. Ananias and Sappira were killed as a result.

Like Ananias and Sappira, we are often whimsical, even if we are at first touched in our hearts. This human mind cannot be an object of trust. It is to be touched in the heart and not to make any sense in volunteering. Whether it is touched or willing, the human mind must have a self-purpose for himself. Therefore, even if the people of Israel made a tabernacle by giving offerings with emotion and resource, it would not save them.

In verses 22-23, the kinds of gifts brought are different. Some bring gold and some bring thread. Gold and thread have different values. And seeing that verses 25,26 say, "And all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen. And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goats' hair." They bring hand-plucked threads instead of existing threads. As such, it can be said that it is a gift with their own hard work and devotion.

In this case, what we can expect, knowing humanity, is to increase the value and meaning of the gifts we bring. It is inevitable in the habit of evaluating who is better while comparing it to someone else's gift. They forgot that everything they brought for the tabernacle was received by the Egyptians when they left Egypt by God.

The conclusion is that even if they make the tabernacle with a gift that was touched and voluntarily brought to their heart, nothing is recognized as faith. Rather, it is the meaning of the tabernacle to know that all things such as human labor, devotion, and devotion are rejected by God through the inability to enter the tabernacle made of the gifts they brought. Although it is a voluntary gift, it is the tabernacle to let them know that it has no meaning. It is Israel that must be denied before the tabernacle, and this is the meaning of the cross!
