<설교>

Chapter 152

Sanctify It

And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof: and it shall be holy.

And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering, and all his vessels, and sanctify the altar: and it shall be an altar most holy.

And thou shalt anoint the laver and his foot, and sanctify it.

And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and wash them with water.

And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest's office. (Exodus 40:9-13 KJV)

(Sermon)

In religion, there is a temple, a place to worship a god, and a temple is distinguished from other places as a holy place because it is a place where a god is worshiped. For example, in Buddhism, it is one of the characteristics of religion that the Buddhist Hall with the Buddha statue is distinguished as a special place, and the Muslim mosque, which means the temple of the Arab people, is also distinguished as a holy place where a god is enshrined. In that sense, the chapel, a place where Christianity worships God, borrows from the Old Testament term as a temple and distinguishes it as a holy place, it is only an aspect of human religion.

Whether it is a temple or a chapel that religious people identify as holy places, the materials that are made are all present in the world, meaning that the materials were not special, different from other buildings. But can it be transformed into a holy place different from the building of the world just because it was built for the purpose of worshiping and offering to the gods? In that sense, the tabernacle of Israel cannot be said to be holy by the building itself. This is because all the materials for the tabernacle were brought from Israel and made by human hands.

In the passage, God says to sanctify everything in the tabernacle. That means that the built tabernacle itself is not holy. If it were holy because it is the tabernacle, there would be no reason to say, 'Make it holy.'

Verse 9 says, "And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof: and it shall be holy.”

This means that when anointing is applied to the tabernacle and everything in it, it is distinguished as holy. If no anointing is applied, the tabernacle is only regarded as a building that has nothing to do with holiness. Thus, is it because anointing is a special oil? Is it that God gives oil that does not exist in the world to make it right and set it apart by the holy tabernacle?

The anointing oil is not special either. It is just a common oil used in life. If anointing had the effect of sanctifying unholy things, applying anointing to a house would make it holy, but there is no such thing. Therefore, the anointing applied to the tabernacle and everything in it to make it holy does not mean that the tabernacle becomes holy by applying anointing oil to the tabernacle, but rather to teach what holiness is through the tabernacle.

In Exodus 30:22-25, God instructs Moses to make an anointing. And if you read the words, "And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil,” you can see that the method of making aroma oil was already used in the life of Israel. It wasn't made in a special way. This means, as I said, that anointing itself was not holy.

The anointing was only used to affix the tabernacle and all its utensils to distinguish it as holy. And it is said that all that comes into contact with something that is so sacred is sanctified (Exodus 30:29). This anointing is also used to sanctify Aaron and his sons to serve as priests (Ex. 30:30).

Likewise, the anointing was applied to Aaron and his sons, the human body. But in Exodus 30:32-33, "Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you. Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.”

Anointing oil is a fragrance oil made according to the method of manufacturing incense used by Israel. But he says that if you make something like this and pour it on people, you will be cut off from the people. So does it mean that Aaron and his sons are not humans? The meaning of these words can be seen in verses 37-38.

"And as for the perfume which thou shalt make, ye shall not make to yourselves according to the composition thereof: it shall be unto thee holy for the LORD. Whosoever shall make like unto that, to smell thereto, shall even be cut off from his people.”

The reason why an anointing made according to the Word of God is distinguished as holy is that it was made for God. Therefore, applying anointing oil to the tabernacle and to everything in the tabernacle means that everything in the tabernacle exists for God, and that is why it is said to be holy. In other words, it was set apart as being holy for God.

But man is self-centered. He lives for himself and acts for himself. No humans seek God for God. Coming out of the tabernacle and offering sacrifices and offerings is also for your own salvation and blessing, not for God. God defined this as unholy and declared it to be cut off from among the people.

We have to take this as a serious matter. Because we are essentially only those who exist for ourselves, and God speaks of such humans as being cut off from the people.

Just as he was not told to make an anointing for Israel, not everything in the tabernacle was to be made for Israel. Broadly speaking, the whole Bible is for God, not for us. But if you think, “If you follow the scriptures, you will be saved and you will be blessed.” That is the same as making an anointing for yourself in the way God said.

There is nothing in the Bible that is the way he speaks for our salvation and blessing. All words are directed only to the glory of God. In that respect, the way and direction we look at the Bible is clearly wrong. So the false judgment we cannot make of ourselves is to be cut off among God's people. He was told not to pour anointing oil on a person's body because there is no possibility of transforming into a human being who is entitled to become God's people.

Aaron is also an unrighteous being that cannot be sanctified by humans. The only difference is that God chose and established him as a priest for God. What is evidenced by this is that it is not the way humans create righteousness, but only by God's choice and call to be separated from the world and belong to holiness. If so, he said that all the methods humans make for themselves are only to challenge God's choice and call, so they are cut off from the people.

Aaron is only used as a tool to show that God's people exist only in the way that God selects and calls sinners, forgives them with the blood of sacrifice, and distinguishes them as holy ones. This is why he pours anointing oil on Aaron's body.

Even when Israel built the tabernacle and looked at it, they did not know the meaning of holiness. They considered the tabernacle itself to be holy and accepted that sacrifices at the tabernacle were to serve and please God. This is the reason why people did not know who Jesus was even though he came into the world. This is because the image of holiness that humans think could not be found in Him.

Holiness is not something we can create. The idea that there is a separate holy conduct reveals an ignorant misunderstanding of holiness. What we can learn from the words to sanctify the anointing with righteousness is that there is no righteousness that can be achieved with our strength or skill, but God's grace and love make us exist. It is the conduct of those who belong to holiness to know that it is the faith, not given by their ability, but by God, having chosen, called, and given grace.

It is holiness to know that the sacrifice of Jesus Christ shed blood on the cross makes us exist, even though we don't have a special deed and a life of faith to show off at all. So, how can we understand the world, the opposite of holiness? It is to be recognized as a believer through conduct that looks holy. To these people, what they have become will not be regarded as the grace of God, but the result of self-interest. It belongs to the world to think that they will be recognized as a believer by living their life of faith. The holy beings of believers are produced only by the actions of Christ Jesus. It is holiness that knows this and puts in the heart His grace only!
