<설교>

Chapter 1

Song Of Solomon

The song of songs, which is Solomon's.

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.

Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.

Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee. (Song of Songs 1:1-4 KJV)

(Sermon)

The word ‘Song of Songs’ means ‘a song among the songs.’ It means 'Solomon's Song', which means one of Solomon's songs. In 1 Kings Chapter 4, it is said that Solomon wrote a thousand and five songs. It shouldn’t be understood that the Song of Songs is elevated to the best among them but because what the theme the Song is singing is the most honorable in a revelatory sense.

The theme of the Song of Songs is love. It contains the supreme dignity in singing the love of God through Solomon's love story. It is a song in the song in that it is not simply the love of a man and a woman, but a song that shows us the love of Jesus Christ, who came as the King. In that sense, Solomon's love is not the same as the love of the world in general. Because in the position of the king is to love a woman who has no reason to love, and it is the love that follows to the end even when the woman rejects his love and runs away. This special love that cannot be seen in the world is sung by Solomon's song and is introduced as the most beautiful and best song in that it testifies to the love of the Lord for His people.

The content of God's love is very familiar to us. There is no Christian who doesn’t know the love of God, who saved us by sending His only-begotten Son into the world and having Him die on the cross. There is no Christian who knows not the grace and love of Jesus, who has forgiven and saved us from our sins by dying and shedding His blood on the cross according to His Father's will. There are many Christians who are loyal to the church and pour out all their enthusiasm, saying that they like Jesus and love God. However, I don't really think we do all things with the answer of life in love. This is our reality of what we cal ‘knowing love.’

Think about the meaning of the Book of Ecclesiastes in front of the Song of Songs. The book of Ecclesiastes begins with the words of the evangelist, son of David, king of Jerusalem, and the evangelist said, "Vintage and vanity, vanity and vanity, everything is vanity." Ecclesiastes 1:1-2).

The theme of Ecclesiastes is to be in vain'. The Book of Ecclesiastes is also a book of wisdom written by Solomon, and the atmosphere of the content feels different from that of the Song of Songs. It's because it comes as if there's a difference between speaking of life in vain and love songs.

However, if you connect the Book of Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs, if the book of Ecclesiastes is a question about life, the Song of Songs can be said to be the answer. In other words, it is a song that answers the question of what is a life that is not in vain with love.

The Book of Ecclesiastes ends with the words, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”(Eccl. 12:13-14 KJV)

This verse can be understood as if it were to say that the fear of God, keeping his commands, and fulfilling man's duty is to live a life that is not in vain. However, the question is whether humans can live by fulfilling their duties in a relationship with God. In conclusion, no human being can live by fulfilling his duty according to the will of God made as a man because man never gives up his will. The will of God spoken by man is also distorted, interpreted as human-centered, and not God's will expressed in the Bible. Therefore, all human actions are only judged as evil.

There is another person who comes as someone who fears God and obeys His commands. He is Jesus. He came to fulfill all of God's will on the cross and place his people within the benefits of righteousness. This is the love of Jesus Christ, and this love is revealed through the Song of Songs. In that sense, the Song of Songs can be understood as teaching that the most precious thing in our lives is the love of the Lord.

The Song of Songs begins with a woman singing, recalling the love of the king with her friends. Today’s passage is its content. First look at verse 2, she says, "Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.”

Why is love compared to wine? One might think that it would be better to speak in comparison to something more expensive than wine, but a woman can understand the value of wine as speaking not in terms of love, but in terms of the pleasure of being drunk.

In Ephesians 5:18, it says, "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.”

Paul speaks against drunkenness and the filling of the Holy Spirit. If we see the reality of the world as drunk, it is that the world of faith is filled with the Holy Spirit. The world lives drunk, but believers live as those who are filled with the Holy Spirit. When a person gets drunk, he becomes oblivious of reality. It can be said that you are looking for alcohol because the thing that can make you laugh as forgetting both the hard work and the sadness by getting drunk. In that way, speaking of the reality of the world as drunk is because you are always dreaming of a reality other than the present reality. It is like getting drunk to pursue something that helps you for a better reality than you are now.

In that sense, that love is better than wine means that the pleasure of love is better than the pleasure of wine. The reality of being loved by a king is better than the joy of the world.

In addition, I would say that alcohol makes you forget about yourself. When you get drunk, you don’t think of yourself. Whatever your circumstances, it is the power of alcohol to make you forget all. You may find alcohol for that, but that's just proof that you're still obsessed with yourself.

Love also makes us forget ourselves. However, it does not make us forget the present reality that we do not like, but rather makes us not think of ourselves based on the reality of the world. It doesn't make sense to the tough reality, the reality without money. It is because we know that the reality that Jesus' love on the cross holds me more precious and joyful than having no money. In this sense, love is better than wine. It is the love of the Lord that is better than anything in the world that pleases us.

In John 13:1, it says, "Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.”

Jesus' love is to love until the end. It's not because it's worth loving to the end. Even a human being who sells Jesus for money, flees from Jesus and crucifies to death to protect himself from danger, he says that he who decides to love loves to the end. If we consider that this love leads us to the place of salvation, we can say without hesitation that the answer in vain life is the love of the Lord. Even if you succeed in the world and rise to a high position that others envy, love is better. It is because we only deserve the judgement without the love that loves us to the end.

Verse 4 says, "Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.”

Think of the heart that will run after her to lead her to the king's room. Whatever she is led to, she rejoices and rejoices in being led to the king's room because the king is love, and she considers it all to be with him. It is not to dwell in the king's room, but to put joy and joy in being with the king.

Often we are curious about what heaven looks like. This is like putting curiosity in the room of the king, not the king. To say that the reward of heaven is to receive a good house is also blatantly showing that we have no interest in Jesus, who loves us at all. The drunken ones who love themselves and focus on themselves from start to finish do not know that they are not in heaven.

God leads us to where the Lord is. He leads to a world where the Lord becomes joy and joy, not happiness and joy in the world. The problem is that God's leading comes to suffering. It is because God's way to make us realize that we are vain and the love of the Lord in vanity is the only solution and answer.

We don't take God's way voluntarily. Only those who are filled with the Holy Spirit will think of the end of life, rely on the love of the Lord, and confess that even the guidance of God, who afflicts me, is grace. This is a believer who lives by miracles and power.

Philippians 2:17-18 says, "Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all. For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.”

This is the life of Paul, who was always afflicted by suffering. The reason Paul rejoices and rejoices over the reality of suffering and suffering is because his heart was in Heaven where the Lord resides. When we have come to know that it was God's guidance that led me to the hardships of heaven, it would become more joy to be with the Lord than to the sufferings. This is the love.

The woman is nothing but an insignificant being who cannot be led to the king's room. Only the love of the king leads unilaterally. This is the love of the Lord, and it is the believer who is held by such love. Although the reality of the world is suffering, the reality in Christ is the fullness of love!
