<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 4

O My Love

I have compared thee, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh's chariots.

Thy cheeks are comely with rows of jewels, thy neck with chains of gold.

We will make thee borders of gold with studs of silver. (Song of Songs 1:9-11 KJV)

(Sermon)

Although Christians speak of God's love, it cannot be said that we know and speak the love that was confirmed by the cross of Jesus Christ because we only think of love as self-centered. For example, the church speaks with the love of God that God has made us children of God by giving us his only begotten Son, Jesus. However, we don't know that God's love requires us to hate ourselves.

In other words, it refers to the love of God in the state of loving oneself, and this is a false love created by human expectations. God's love, confirmed by the cross of human self-love, is also distorted into love for humans. If I told them, ‘God's love makes us hate ourselves', would they understand and accept it? All, including myself, would refuse it. It is because we do not know that human self-love itself is the sin of crucifying Jesus.

In today’s passage, the king calls the woman he loves as 'my love.' And the text says that his loved one is compared to Pharaoh's chariot horsemen, her cheeks are beautiful with braided hair, and the neck is beautiful with a string of beads, and for his loved one, he will make silver in a gold chain.

On the surface, it's about expressing his own love to the woman he loves. It feels like a love letter that goes back and forth between a man and a woman in love. Yet, the passage is not such a simple love story. When viewed from the perspective that the Song of Songs shows the love of Jesus Christ in advance, it should be noted that the text also contains the love of God confirmed by the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.

The woman the king calls ‘my love’ has a face turned black because she worked in her vineyard all day, meaning it's not enough to get a man's attention. Moreover, if you consider that there are countless women around the king, you can see that she is not his beloved love because of the woman's face.

However, it is said that he compares her to a company of horses in Pharaoh's chariots. The horse means a mare. Pharaoh's chariot, or horse that pulls a chariot, would have been ornately adorned with a number of jewels and ornaments. To say this to a beloved does not mean that his woman is really beautiful, but rather to what the king loves, whatever his woman looks like, that the woman has nothing to do for her own beauty.

The king loves the woman. Even if her face is darkened and tacky, she is loved by the king, and she is in a state where the woman has nothing to do to decorate herself just as compared to the horseman of her Pharaoh's chariot. God's love ought to be understood this way.

However, we say there is something to do to receive the love of God. It is that we have to be a believer who deserves God’s love. Thus, we try to decorate ourselves with various things that look beautiful to the human eye, but we are ignorant of the important point that all of them are rather despising God's great love. It is buried in vain expectations and illusions that look at false love as love and hope that it will lead you to a happy life.

The king says that her woman's two cheeks are braided, and her neck is beautiful with a string of beads. Yet, if his lady has her displeasure on her own cheeks and neck and wants to look beautiful by embellishing them with something else, that means she doesn't believe in the love of the king who calls herself beautiful. In the end, as she assumes that she cannot be loved in this way, she is mobilizing her own means and zeal to become loved.

Imagine what it means in verse 11, “We will make thee borders of gold with studs of silver.” It is precious if it is made of silver in a gold chain. The king who loves her would make it for the woman he loves. If the king makes what is honorable, there is nothing for a woman to do be loved by him. However, it can be said that it is her woman's best to be thrilled and rejoiced at the love given one way.

Despite the lack of conditions and reasons to receive his love, she would be touched and grateful for the love of not seeing herself. This is the reaction that occurs when the loved one knows the innermost of the love given to one. Thus, no matter what his woman looks like, if the king says she is beautiful, she doesn't need to look back and judge herself as handsome or ugly. It's okay no matter what the people around her talk about her because it is in the love of the king. This is the love of the cross.

The cross proclaims that God took responsibility for everything and accomplished everything with the blood of Jesus, His only begotten Son. This is God's love. Knowing such love leads us to a position where we have nothing to do for ourselves. And seeing the Lord as a person who is moved by the one-sided love is to live as a person who truly knows the love of God.

Psalm 131:2 says, "Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.”

All of the gaze of the mother looking at the weaned child in her arms is love. The weaned baby knows her mother's love and has done nothing to appreciate or be loved. Only she is loved for one reason she is a child born by her mother. Knowing such love calms our souls. The love that God loves one unilaterally because one is a child of God born of the blood of Jesus Christ brings one such placid mind.

However, our self-love breaks the state of the still and calm soul. Self-love to get what you want by receiving God's love makes you feel inadequate in yourselves. Eventually, we would look to satisfy our own shortcomings and meet the conditions that deserve to be loved, which results in interpreting God's love as our own greed. As we would interpret the love of God in our own love and, as a result, collides with the love of the cross, the calmness and tranquility of the soul is broken into pieces.

When the king calls her “my love,” it means that she has become his loved one through his unconditional love. This is the reality of believers in a loving relationship with God. I hope that all eyes can be directed to the love that calls us "my dear," not because of our own image but because of the forgiveness of the blood of Jesus Christ!
