<설교>
우리는 성막을 하나님이 거하시는 거룩한 장소로 생각합니다. 그런데 시 78:59-60절을 보면“하나님이 들으시고 분내어 이스라엘을 크게 미워하사 사람 가운데 세우신 장막 곧 실로의 성막을 떠나시고”라는 말을 합니다. 그렇다면 성막은 하나님이 거하시기 위한 목적이라기보다는 이스라엘이 하나님과 함께할 수 없는 불의한 존재임을 보여주기 위함이라고 말하는 것이 옳습니다.
하나님은 이스라엘이 하나님의 미움을 받고 하나님을 성막에서 떠나시게 할 불의한 존재라는 것을 이미 아시기 때문입니다. 그래서 성막을 하나님이 거하시는 집을 만들어 이스라엘과 함께하시면서 복을 주고 재앙으로부터 보호하시겠다는 취지로 해석하면 안 되는 것입니다. 그것은 인간을 위하고 인간에게 유리한 인간 중심의 해석일 뿐입니다.
하나님이 이스라엘을 미워하시고 진노하게 되시는 것은 산당과 우상 때문입니다. 성막이 있음에도 불구하고 자기를 위한 산당을 짓고 우상을 섬기는 것이 진노의 이유입니다. 그러면 우상을 버리고 하나님만 섬기면 하나님의 진노에서 벗어나고 하나님도 이스라엘을 떠나지 않으시는 것입니까?
이론적으로는 그렇습니다. 하지만 실제로는 불가능합니다. 왜냐하면 인간의 실존은 우상에서 벗어날 수 없기 때문입니다. 우상은 인간을 위해 인간이 만들어 낸 신인데 인간의 모든 활동이 자기를 위한 목적으로 행해지고 있으며 신 또한 자기를 위해 찾는다는 것이 이유입니다. 그래서 성막은 제사라는 방식을 통해 하나님이 섬김받고 이스라엘이 바치는 제물로 기뻐하기 위한 목적으로 만들게 하신 것으로 해석할 수 없는 것입니다.
이스라엘이 성막을 만들고 거기에 하나님이 거하시고 하나님께 나아가 제사를 드리는 것으로 구원을 받고 복을 받는 민족으로 존재하게 된다면 그것은 하나님의 언약 사상이 살아 있는 믿음의 세계가 아니라 세상의 모든 사람이 추구하는 종교일 뿐입니다. 하나님이 말씀하신 것을 지켜 행함으로 복을 얻고자 하는 세상 방식에 의해 유지되는 종교의 세계인 것입니다.
성막을 만들라고 하신 것은 하나님이 인간의 종교 세계를 미워하시고 거부하시며 그러한 인간에게 함께 하지 않으심을 보여주기 위한 것입니다. 그래서 이스라엘이 성막을 만들고 제사 드리면서 성막의 의미를 제대로 알게 되면 자신들이야말로 하나님이 함께할 수 없는 불의한 존재라는 사실에 눈이 열리는 것이고 성막이라는 방식으로 자신들에게 함께 하시는 하나님의 긍휼과 자비하심이 자신들을 존재하게 한다는 것을 깨닫게 되는 것입니다.
그렇다면 참된 믿음의 세계는 어떤 모습으로 드러나게 될까요? 가장 먼저는 의로움과 경건과 거룩과 선함과 구원을 위한 모든 노력이 헛되다는 것을 아는 것입니다. 그래서 자신에게 가능성을 두지 않는 무능한 존재로 하나님을 만나게 되는 인간이 하나님이 만들고자 하시는 하나님 백성입니다.
출 25:1-2절을 보면 “여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 이스라엘 자손에게 명령하여 내게 예물을 가져오라 하고 기쁜 마음으로 내는 자가 내게 바치는 모든 것을 너희는 받을지니라”는 말씀으로 시작하여 27장까지 성막을 어떻게 만들 것인가에 대한 말씀이 이어집니다. 그리고 28장에서는 제사장 옷에 대한 내용이 있습니다.
이렇게 성막에 대한 내용이 이미 앞에서 언급되었다면 성막을 어떻게 만들었는지에 대한 자세한 설명이 필요 없는 것 아닐까요? 36:1절의 “브살렐과 오홀리압과 및 마음이 지혜로운 사람 곧 여호와께서 지혜와 총명을 부으사 성소에 쓸 모든 일을 할 줄 알게 하신 자들은 모두 여호와께서 명령하신 대로 할 것이니라”는 말로 시작하여 38장까지 성막을 만드는 내용이 다시 반복되어 설명되는데 그럴 필요 없이‘하나님이 말씀하신 성막을 만들었더라’는 말로도 충분하지 않으냐는 것입니다.
하지만 그것은 하나님이 성막으로 하시는 일보다 성막을 만들었다는 사실에만 마음을 두는 것이라고 할 수 있습니다. 그래서 성막이 어떤 재료와 어떤 구조와 모습으로 만들어질 것에 대해 이미 앞에서 언급했으니 다시 언급할 필요가 없는 것 아니냐는 의문이 들게 되는 것입니다.
성막을 어떻게 만들 것인가를 앞에서 말씀하셨고 다시 성막을 어떻게 만들었는지가 자세하게 언급되는 것에서 우리는 성막에는 인간의 생각과 의도가 전혀 개입되지 않았다는 생각을 해 볼 수 있습니다. 성막이 하나님이 처음에 말씀하신 대로 만들어졌다는 것입니다.
하나님이 브살렐과 오홀리압을 부르시고 하나님의 영과 지혜가 충만하게 하셨고 이들 외에도 하나님이 마음이 지혜로운 사람들을 부르셨는데 여기서 말하는 지혜의 충만도 인간의 모든 생각을 배제하는 지혜로 이해할 수 있는 것입니다.
물론 성막은 하늘에서 만들어져 내려온 것이 아니라 인간의 손으로 만들어졌습니다. 성막에 필요한 재료들도 이스라엘 백성들이 넘치도록 가져온 것들입니다. 그렇게 보면 성막을 만드는 일에 인간의 수고와 노력과 헌신이 들어갔다고 할 수도 있습니다. 이런 이유로 기독교인들이‘하나님은 사람을 통해 일하신다’는 말을 합니다. 사람을 통해 일하시기 때문에 사람으로 인해서 하나님의 일이 이루어진다는 것인데 이것이 사람의 일에 가치를 두고자 하는 악한 습성인 것입니다.
성막은 구원의 통로가 되지 못한다고 했습니다. 성막을 만들기 위해 예물을 가져오고 자신들의 손으로 수고하여 만든 성막이라 해도 그것이 이스라엘의 의로움이 되지 못합니다. 오히려 자신들의 손으로 만든 성막에 들어갈 수 없다는 것을 통해서 인간의 손으로 한 일이 하나님께 인정받고 그것 때문에 하나님과 함께 하는 거룩한 존재가 되지 못한다는 것을 실감하게 하는 것이 성막입니다.
출 40:35절을 보면 “모세가 회막에 들어갈 수 없었으니 이는 구름이 회막 위에 덮이고 여호와의 영광이 성막에 충만함이었으며”라고 말합니다.
모세는 하나님께 부름을 받아 이스라엘을 애굽에서 인도하는 헌신을 했습니다. 하나님의 일로 인해서 애굽을 나와서는 백성들의 원망을 수없이 들어야 했습니다. 무엇보다도 직접 하나님의 말씀을 들었고 하나님께 십계명이 기록된 돌판을 받은 사람이기도 합니다. 그런 모세도 회막에 들어갈 수 없었다고 합니다. 이처럼 회막, 즉 성막은 하나님이 허락한 제사장 외에는 인간이 들어갈 수 없는 장소로 존재하는 것입니다. 인간의 손으로 성막을 만들었다 해도 공로로 인정되는 것이 아니며 심판받을 불의한 존재라는 것에는 변함이 없는 것입니다.
이것이 사도 바울이 증거 한 십자가 사상입니다. 우리 죄를 대신하여 피 흘려 죽으신 십자가 앞에서 우리가 공로로 자랑할 수 있는 수고와 노력은 존재하지 않는 것입니다. 다만 인간은 처음부터 끝까지 하나님의 거룩에 들어갈 수 없는 존재로만 드러나야 하기 때문입니다. 이것을 아는 것이 지혜고 하나님의 영의 충만입니다.
사 6장에 보면 이사야 선지자가 성전에서 하나님의 영광을 경험하고 “화로다 나여 망하게 되었도다 나는 입술이 부정한 사람이요 나는 입술이 부정한 백성 중에 거주하면서 만군의 여호와이신 왕을 뵈었음이로다”(사 6:5)라고 고백합니다.
하나님의 말씀을 말씀 그대로 외쳤던 이사야가 자신을 입술이 부정한 자로 고백하는 것이 이해되십니까? 우리라면 복음을 전하는 자기 입술을 자랑했을 것입니다. 그런데도 입술이 부정한 자라고 하는 것은 말씀을 외치는 것을 자신이 한 일로 여기지 않기 때문입니다.
오로지 자기 영광과 자기 유익을 위한 말을 할 수밖에 없는 것이 인간임을 생각하면 인간의 입술은 부정합니다. 그런 인간이 말씀을 외치고 있다면 그것은 전적으로 하나님에 의해 되어진 일일 뿐입니다. 이러한 시각에서 입술이 부정한 자라는 고백이 가능한 것입니다.
성막은 하나님께 열심히 제사하면 복을 주시겠다는 취지로 만들어진 것이 아니라고 했습니다. 오히려 자신들이 만든 성막에 들어갈 수 없음을 통해서 하나님의 거룩한 곳에 들어갈 수 없는 불의하고 부정한 존재라는 것을 깨닫게 되는 것이 성막으로 말씀하시는 하나님의 뜻에 순종 되는 것입니다.
그리고 불의한 자신들로 인해 매일 죄 없는 제물이 희생되는 것을 보면서 자신들이 존재하고 살아가는 근거가 자신들에게 있지 않고 제물로 증거되는 하나님의 자비와 사랑에 있음을 잊지 않아야 했던 것입니다. 이것으로 죽음의 존재인 우리가 사는 것도 예수님의 피로 이루어진 생명 때문임을 알게 되는 것입니다.
Chapter 150
Building The Tabernacle
And every wise hearted man among them that wrought the work of the tabernacle made ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet: with cherubim of cunning work made he them.
The length of one curtain was twenty and eight cubits, and the breadth of one curtain four cubits: the curtains were all of one size.
And he coupled the five curtains one unto another: and the other five curtains he coupled one unto another.
And he made loops of blue on the edge of one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling: likewise he made in the uttermost side of another curtain, in the coupling of the second.
Fifty loops made he in one curtain, and fifty loops made he in the edge of the curtain which was in the coupling of the second: the loops held one curtain to another.
And he made fifty taches of gold, and coupled the curtains one unto another with the taches: so it became one tabernacle. (Exodus 36:8-13 KJV)

We believe the tabernacle is a holy place where God wells. Yet, Psalm 78:59-60 says, “When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel: So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men.” Then, it could be said that the tabernacle is rather to show Israel that they are evil, who can’t be with God than for God to dwell with them.
It is because God already knows they are unrighteous, hated by God, who forsakes the tabernacle. That’s why we mustn’t view the tabernacle that it is built for the purpose that God would bless the Israelites and protect them from troubles because such interpretation is nothing but for men’s sake.
Why God abhors them and is furious against them is that they made high places and idols despite having the tabernacle. Then, if they were to abandon their idols and worship God only, would they be no under the wrath of God and God wouldn’t leave them?
Theoretically, it may be so. Yet, it is impossible in reality because men can’t get out of idolatry. We made idols for ourselves and all of our activities are done for our benefits, seeking for gods for our sake. Therefore, we can conclude through the offerings that the tabernacle is not where people give offerings to God and God is pleased.
If Israel builds the tabernacle and God dwells there and is saved and blessed by going to God and offering sacrifices, it is not a world of faith in which God's covenant idea is alive, but a religion pursued by all people in the world. It is a world of religion maintained by the way of the world to be blessed by doing what God has said.
The purpose of making the tabernacle is to show that God hates and rejects the world of human religion and is not with them. So, when Israel builds and sacrifices the tabernacle, when they know the meaning of the tabernacle properly, their eyes are opened to the fact that they are unrighteous beings that God cannot be with them and only God's mercy can make them live.
If so, what does the world of the true faith look like? First of all, it is to be aware that all efforts for one’s righteousness, godliness, goodness and salvation are vain. Thus, one who knows the vanity of oneself is a child of God that God wants to make.
In Exodus 25:1-2, it says, “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering”, followed by two more chapters about how to build the tabernacle. It is followed by Chapter 28, the attire of priests.
Since those previous chapters talk about the tabernacle, would it be necessary to record how it has been built in depth? In Chapter 36:1, it says, “Then wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that the LORD had commanded”, followed by two more chapters of the tabernacle. Wouldn’t it be enough to say that they built the tabernacle that God had commanded.
However, it can be said that it is only to focus on the fact that they made the tabernacle rather than what God does with the tabernacle. So, since we have already mentioned what material, what structure, and shape the tabernacle will be made of, the question arises whether it is not necessary to mention it again.
Through the details of how to make the tabernacle and how it has actually been made, we can think that the tabernacle did not involve human thoughts and intentions at all. The tabernacle was made just as God said at first.
God called Bezaleel and Aholiab to be filled with the Spirit and wisdom of God, and besides these, God called people with wise hearts. The fullness of wisdom mentioned here can be understood as wisdom that excludes all human thoughts.
Of course, the tabernacle was not made from heaven, but was made by human hands. The materials needed for the tabernacle were also brought over by the Israelites. In that way, it can be said that the creation of the tabernacle took human effort and dedication. For this reason, Christians say that God works through people. Because you work through people, God's work is done because of people. This is an evil habit that tries to value people's work.
It was said that the tabernacle cannot be a channel of salvation. Even if the tabernacle was made by bringing gifts and working hard with their own hands to make the tabernacle, it is not the righteousness of Israel. Rather, through the fact that they cannot enter the tabernacle made by their own hands, it is the tabernacle to realize that the work done by human hands is recognized by God and that it is not possible to become a holy being with God.
In Exodus 40:35, it says, “And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.”
Moses was called by God to make a dedication to leading Israel out of Egypt. Because of God's work, he had to hear the resentment of the people countless times after leaving Egypt. Most of all, he is a person who has heard the word of God himself and has received the tablets on which the Ten Commandments are written from God. It is said that even such Moses could not enter the tent of meeting. In this way, the tabernacle, or the tent, exists as a place that humans cannot enter except for the priests permitted by God. Even if the tabernacle was made with human hands, it is not recognized as a merit, and that it is an unrighteous being to be judged.
This is the idea of the cross testified by the apostle Paul. There is no labor and effort that we can boast with merit in the face of the cross, which was shed blood for our sins. However, it is because humans must be revealed only as beings who cannot enter into God's holiness from beginning to end. Knowing this is wisdom and the fullness of God's Spirit.
In Isaiah 6:5, it says, “Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”
Do you understand that Isaiah, who cried out the word of God as it was, confesses himself as a man with unclean lips? We would have boasted of our lips to preach the Gospel. Nevertheless, the reason they say that their lips are unclean is because they do not regard shouting the Word as what they did.
Human lips are unclean when we consider that it is human beings who can only speak for their own glory and for their own benefit. If such a man is shouting the Word, it is only done entirely by God. From this perspective, it is possible to confess that the lips are unclean.
It was said that the tabernacle was not made with the intent of giving blessings if you make a eager sacrifice to God. Rather, through the inability to enter the tabernacle they created, they realize that they are unrighteous and unclean beings who cannot enter the holy place of God, in order to obey the will of God speaking through the tabernacle.
And as they watched their sinless sacrifices every day due to their unrighteousness, they should not forget that the basis for their existence and living is not on them, but on God's mercy and love, which are testified by sacrifices. With this, we know that we, as beings of death, live because of the life made up of the blood of Jesus!
