사람에게는 각자 자신이 원하는 자기 세계가 있습니다. 자기 위치에서 이루고 싶은 것이 있고 되기를 원하는 바람들이 있습니다. 그리고 하나님을 부르며 자기 세계가 원하는 대로 이루어지기를 구합니다. 이러한 인간의 욕망에 함께 하고 부추기는 것이 교회에 자리하고 있는 목사라는 존재들입니다. 하나님은 인간이 꿈꾸고 원하는 세계를 위해 일하지 않으신다는 것은 성경을 통해 확인하게 되는데, 성경이 계시하는 하나님이 아니라 인간이 원하는 하나님을 제시하며 종교인들에게 접근하는 것입니다. 이것이 구부러진 길에 있는 인간의 모습입니다.
13-15절을 보면“이 무리는 정직한 길을 떠나 어두운 길로 행하며 행악하기를 기뻐하며 악인의 패역을 즐거워하나니 그 길은 구부러지고 그 행위는 패역하니라”라고 말합니다.
우리가 이런 말씀을 대할 때 경계해야 하는 것은‘나는 어두운 길로 행하고 행악을 기뻐하고 악인의 패역을 즐거워하는 자가 아니다’라는 생각입니다. 우리는 항상 나를 좋은 편에 두고 싶어 합니다. 10-12절에서 말하는 것처럼 지혜가 나의 마음에 들어오고, 지식으로 즐거워하는 영혼이 되고, 근심으로 지킴을 받고 명철로 보호를 받는 것에 더 마음을 둡니다. 그래서 자신이 구부러진 길에 있고 행위가 패역하다고 생각하지 않습니다. 이것이 언제나 내 편이 되어 살아가는 우리의 모습입니다.
하나님도 내 편이 되어 찾습니다. 그래서 나를 위하고 도와주는 하나님만 생각할 뿐이지 하나님 자기 편이 되어 하나님을 위해 일하시는 하나님을 이해하지 못하는 것입니다. 그런데 성경에는 인간의 편에서 인간을 위해 일하시는 하나님은 없습니다. 이것은 창세기 1장의 세상을 창조하시는 하나님의 일에서부터 드러납니다. 인간을 위한 세계를 만드신 것이 아니라 하나님을 위한 세계를 만드신 것이고, 그것이 예수님의 십자가로 완성되어 나타난 것입니다.
세상을 지으실 때마다 하나님은 보시기에 좋았더라고 하시고, 사람을 지으시고 모든 일을 마치셨을 때는‘보시기에 심히 좋았더라’고 하십니다. 하지만 당시 땅에는 사탄이 존재하고 있었음을 생각하면‘보시기에 좋았더라’는 말씀은 이해할 수 없게 됩니다. 차라리 사람을 유혹하여 죄로 끌어가는 사탄을 먼저 땅에서 쫓아내시고, 죄가 없는 상태의 세상으로 기뻐하시는 것이 더 타당하기 때문입니다. 이것으로 우리는 인간이 생각하는 세상과 하나님이 목적하시는 세상이 다르다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
하나님은 사람을 자기의 형상대로 지으시고 세상을 다스리게 하셨습니다. 하나님의 형상은 다스리는 기능으로 나타난다는 것인데, 사람이 선악과를 먹음으로 사탄의 다스림을 받으면서 하나님의 형상이 없는 인간으로 존재하게 된 것입니다. 그런데 그리스도가 하나님의 형상으로 오시고 세상을 다스리십니다.
그렇다면 하나님의 창조는 예수 그리스도의 다스림을 받는 참된 세계를 목적으로 한다고 할 수 있습니다. 이것을 위해 사탄이라는 존재가 필요했던 것이고, 계시록 12장에서 말하는 것처럼 하늘의 싸움에서 패한 사탄을 땅으로 쫓아내신 이유도 이러한 하나님의 뜻에서 그 답을 찾을 수가 있는 것입니다.
10절에 보면“곧 지혜가 네 마음에 들어가며 지식이 네 영혼을 즐겁게 할 것이요”라고 말합니다.
우리 마음에 지혜가 들어오면 어떻게 될까요? 흔히 생각하는 것처럼 마음이 깨끗해지고, 성품이 변하고, 정의감으로 가득한 상태로 변하는 것은 없습니다. 지혜가 들어오면 내 편이 되어 나를 위해 살아가는 마음 자체가 구부러졌다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 그래서 내가 원하는 나의 세계를 꿈꾸며 그것을 이루기 위해 힘쓰고 살아가는 인생을 구부러진 길에서 패역을 행하는 것으로 보게 되는 것입니다.
하지만 성경은 우리에게 구부러진 길을 곧게 펴라거나 구부러진 길에서 벗어나 곧은 길로 갈 것을 요구하지 않습니다. 우리의 마음 자체가 구부러져 있는데 그것을 무슨 수로 곧게 펴겠습니까? 다만 지혜가 구부러진 마음에 들어옴으로써 지혜가 참된 길이 되심을 깨닫고 지혜를 나의 의로 의지하게 되는 것입니다. 이것이 우리에게 성령을 보내시는 이유입니다.
지혜가 우리 마음에 들어오는 것은 새 피조물로 새롭게 시작하였음을 의미합니다. 세상과 인생을 바라보는 안목이 새로워진 것입니다. 나를 위한 인생이 아니라 주를 위해 살도록 허락된 인생임을 깨닫게 됩니다. 이것이“그런즉 네가 공의와 정의와 정직 곧 모든 선한 길을 깨달을 것이라”(9절)라는 말이 지혜가 들어오므로 알게 되는 새로운 안목입니다.
새로운 안목이 있게 되면 전혀 알지 못했던 사실을 깨닫게 되는데, 가장 중심적인 것은 자신을 하나님의 미움의 대상으로 보는 것입니다. 그리고 미움받는 것이 당연한 자를 예수 안에 불러주신 이유 없는 사랑에 감격하고 감사하게 됩니다. 이처럼 하나님의 미움을 알게 해서 사랑이 감당할 수 없는 큰 은혜로 다가오게 하시고, 은혜 아래에서 은혜로 다스려지는 십자가의 세계가 즐거움이 되게 하는 것이 지혜가 우리 마음에서 행하시는 일입니다.
11-12절을 보면“근신이 너를 지키며 명철이 너를 보호하여 악한 자의 길과 패역을 말하는 자에게서 건져 내리라”라고 말합니다.
우리는 세상에서 나의 존재를 지키고 보호할 힘을 갖고 싶어 합니다. 그런 우리에게 사실 근신과 명철은 도무지 힘으로 여겨지지 않습니다. 추상적이고 막연하게 느껴질 뿐이고 관심도 없습니다. 하지만 그것도 우리의 세계를 생각하는 것입니다. 우리가 살고자 하는 세계에서 지혜, 근신, 명철은 쓸모가 없습니다. 힘이 되지 않기 때문입니다.
악한 자의 길과 패역을 말하는 자에게서 건져내는 것은 구별한다는 뜻입니다. 지혜가 우리 마음에 들어와서 우리를 악한 자의 길과 패역을 말하는 자에게서 건져내어 구별하였다는 것인데, 그렇다면 구별된 신자 됨은 어떻게 나타나는 것일까요? 선한 일을 하고 믿음에 열심을 내는 것일까요? 이것을 구별된 것으로 아는 것이 구부러진 길에 있는 것입니다.
지혜로 인한 구별은 나의 선함과 나의 믿음으로 구원될 수 없음을 아는 것입니다. 어떤 행위로도 하나님의 미움에서 벗어날 수 없음을 아는 것입니다. 그래서 자신을 구원받을 수 없는 자로 보게 되는 그것이 지혜로 인한 구별이고 악한 자의 길에서 건짐 받은 증표입니다. 악한 자의 길은 자신의 선함으로 원하는 것으로 이루고자 하고, 자신을 미움의 대상이 아닌 복의 대상으로 보는 것이기 때문입니다.
근신은 자신을 높일 받을 자가 아닌 미움 받을 자로 바라보며 십자가의 의를 의지하는 것입니다. 이러한 근심이 악한 자의 길에서 우리를 지킵니다. 우리의 힘으로 지키고 성취하고자 하는 것이 어두운 길이며 구부러진 길입니다. 지혜는 우리를 이러한 길에서 건져내어 성도들의 길을 가게 합니다. 이것이 용서의 은혜 아래 있는 십자가의 세계입니다.
Chapter 7
The Crooked Ways
When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;
Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;
Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;
Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths. (Proverbs 2:10-15 KJV)

We have our own world that we want. There are things we want to achieve in our position, and there are wishes we want to become. And we call on God and ask for our world to be done as we want it to. It is preachers who are present in the church that share and encourage this human desire. Although it is confirmed through the Bible that God does not work for the world that human beings dream of and desire and it is not the God that the Bible reveals, they approach the religious people with the God that we want. This is what we are on the crooked paths.
Verses 13-15 say, “Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths.”
What we need to be wary of when dealing with these words is the thought, 'I am not a person who walks in a dark way, and rejoices in evil, and rejoices in the rebellion of the wicked.’ We always want to put ourselves on the good side. As verses 10-12 say, we are more concerned with wisdom entering our heart, being a soul that rejoices with knowledge, being guarded with sorrow and guarded by understanding. So we do not think we are on the crooked roads and our deeds are rebellious. This is how we always live by our side.
We also believe God is on our side. So, we only think of God who is for us and helps us, but we do not understand God who is on God's side and works for God Himself. However, in the Bible, there is no God who works for humans on the human side. This is evident from the work of God creating the world in Genesis 1. He did not create the world for humans, but for God, and that was completed and revealed through the cross of Jesus Christ.
Whenever He created the world, God said that it was good, and when He created man and finished all the work, He said, 'It was very good.' However, considering the existence of Satan on the earth at that time, the phrase ‘He saw that it was good’ becomes incomprehensible. It is because it is more appropriate to first cast out Satan, who tempts and leads people into sin, from the earth, and then rejoices in a world without sin. From this, we can see that the world that man thinks of is different from the world that God intends.
God created man in His image and gave him dominion over the world. The image of God appears as a function of ruling and as humans ate the fruit of the forbidden fruit, they were ruled by Satan and came to exist as human beings without the image of God. Yet, Christ comes in the image of God and rules the world.
Then, it can be said that God's creation aims for the true world under the rule of Jesus Christ. The existence of Satan was needed for this, and as stated in Revelation chapter 12, the reason Satan, who was defeated in the battle in heaven, was expelled to the earth, we can find the answer in this will of God.
Verse 10 says, “When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul.”
What happens when wisdom enters our hearts? There is no such thing as a pure heart, a change of character, and a state of being full of justice, as is often thought. When wisdom comes in, we come to know that the very heart that is on our side and lives for ourselves has been bent. That is why we see our life dreaming of the world we want and working hard to make it come true as we are doing rebellion on the crooked roads.
But the Bible does not ask us to straighten the crooked way or to deviate from the crooked way to go straight. Our mind itself is crooked, how can we straighten it? It is only when wisdom enters into the crooked heart that we realize that wisdom is the true way and rely on it as our righteousness. This is why God sends us the Holy Spirit.
When wisdom enters our hearts, it means that we have a new beginning as a new creature. It is a new way of looking at the world and life. We realize that it is a life that we are allowed to live, not for ourselves, but for the Lord. This is the new insight that comes from wisdom, which says in Verse 9, “Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.”
If we have the new perspective, we will come to realize what we have never known before. The most important thing is to see ourselves as the object of God's hatred. And we will be moved and thankful for the love for no reason that called those who deserve to be hated in Jesus. In this way, it is the work of wisdom in our hearts to make the world of the cross, governed by grace under grace, a joy, by making us know God's hatred, so that love can come to us with grace that we cannot bear.
In verses 11-12, it says, “Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things.”
We want to have the power to preserve and protect our existence in the world. In fact, to us, discretion and understanding are not considered to be power at all. It just feels abstract and vague, and we don't care. But it is also thinking about our own world. Wisdom, discretion, and understanding are useless in the world we want to live in because it doesn't have power.
To deliver from the way of the evil one and from the one who speaks of rebellion means to set apart. Wisdom has come into our hearts and has set us apart by delivering us from those who speak the way of the evil one and rebellion. So, how does being a separate believer manifest? Is it that we are doing good and being zealous in our faith? If so, it means we are on the crooked ways.
The distinction by wisdom is knowing that we cannot be saved by our goodness and our faith. It is knowing that you cannot escape God's hatred by any action. So, seeing ourselves as someone who cannot be saved is a distinction made by wisdom and a sign of being delivered from the way of the evil one. This is because the way of the evil one is to achieve what he wants with his goodness, and to see himself as an object of blessing, not of hatred.
Discretion is seeing yourself as someone to be hated, not someone to be exalted, and relying on the righteousness of the cross. Such sorrow keeps us from the way of the wicked. It is a dark and crooked path that we seek to protect and achieve in our own strength. Wisdom saves us from these paths and sets us on the path of the saints. This is the world of the cross under the grace of forgiveness!
