<설교>

Chapter 9

If So

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. (Proverbs 3:1-10 KJV)

(Sermon)

In the Bible, there are commands from God, ‘do’s and ‘don’t’s. Do we have to keep them or we don’t have to? It could be said that they are commands from God, so keeping them is faith and it is the duty of a believer. However, we cannot keep any of God's commands, and to keep His commands is to ignore the existence of Christ in our relationship with God. It is because Christianity is that we have a relationship of reconciliation with God because Jesus Christ kept all the words of God.

If Christ kept God's command and we live by faith in the blood of the cross in Christ, we have nothing to keep. However, since it is a command and we take it as a meaning to keep, the word, ‘sanctification’, which requires our efforts and will appears. This is the reality of Christianity, which has been a religion due to the omission of the perfection of Jesus accomplished by blood on the cross.

If you accept the order as something you must obey, you will not be freed from the guilt of not keeping it. Your heart will be heavy with guilt for failing to keep the commands, such as not to strive to be rich, not to hate your brother in your heart, and so on. Jesus forgave all our sins through the shedding of blood, but we must know that it is outside of faith in the cross for a believer who believes in the power of forgiveness to blame himself for not keeping the commandments and feel guilty about it.

How, then, should we understand God's commands? The important thing is to understand it in the perfection of Jesus Christ, who kept all the commands. If so, the command can start in the sense that it's not something we're supposed to do. If we do not consider the completion of the cross, which was said to have been completed, we will not be able to understand the saying that it is not a command that we must keep and obey. You may think that you are proceeding with self-indulgence in ignoring the Word by using the fact that you cannot keep it as an excuse. However, you should know that accepting the command as obligatory is the same as accepting judgment for your actions.

The passage is also structured in the imperative mood. It says, “My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments (verse 1), and “For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee” (verse 2). It is a structure that Verse 1 is led to Verse 2. It is a command to 'keep it' and a promise of a reward if you keep it.

As I said, if you remove Jesus from the command to keep, it becomes a problem that you have to keep. That is Judaism. Judaism accepted the law as a command from God and believed it to be followed. So there was no need for Jesus.

I said that Jesus has fulfilled all God's commands. Therefore, in Jesus, the world of perfection, the commands were kept by Him, and the blessings are given to those to enjoy them who are in Him. So, the word ‘then’ means that as Christ fulfills God’s command, we will live many years of life and peace will be increased in us.

As Jesus fulfilled his command, believers called in Jesus will receive longevity and peace as a gift. However, the gifts of longevity and peace will not be felt. This is because there is no guarantee that we will live long even if we believe in Him, and the reality we are experiencing also is difficult to say that peace has been added.

The problem is to interpret the gift we receive through the works of Christ in Him as it is in our view of reality living in the world. In other words, it is wrong to understand longevity as having a long lifespan and the peace of the environment enjoyed in the flesh. Man, as interpreted in Christ, is a damned sinner who does not deserve to exist. Even if God calls the soul today, there is nothing to say. Therefore, to those who are in Jesus Christ, today always comes as a gift of long life.

Peace can also be known only to believers who do not see the world but give thanks through the grace of the cross in Jesus Christ. When you see the world, every single thing in the world will come to you as something related to you. That is why we sometimes feel dissatisfied with the way the wicked are prospering. But in Jesus, grace does not change in anything in the world. The Word makes us realize that the reality of a sinner who cannot be saved even if we are troubled and worried about the world, and learn and appreciate how precious the world of forgiveness made with the blood of Jesus is. This is the peace given as a gift in Christ.

There is no difficulty to read Verses 9 and 10, understood in Christ, “Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.”

Honoring God with wealth and the firstfruits of his produce does not mean to offer to God. It does not mean that we honor the God who gives us riches, and that God gives us abundant blessings when our storehouses are full. Nevertheless, the church focusing on devoting these contents and drawing blessings as a reward is not in the grace of the cross, but only clinging to their world overflowing with the things of the earth they value.

To honor God with the firstfruits of his produce is to get out of thinking that he is what he had earned through his work. If the firstfruits are from God, then all laterfruits also belong to the firstfruits. It is the result of the first ripe fruit. So, not to see them as ours because of our efforts is to honor the Lord.

This leads to the words of 1 Corinthians 15:20, “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.”

Because Christ is the firstfruits, all who belong to Christ have a part in the resurrection. We do not receive blessings because we keep, do, and do well, but because Jesus became the first fruits of the resurrection, and all in Jesus Christ are in a relationship where they become fruits pleasing to God. So the believer is a partaker of the grace of the blood of Jesus, that is, a new world overflowing with the new wine.

God's command was fulfilled and kept by Christ. Jesus fulfilled the condition of 'if you do that'. And we are called to rejoice, and give thanks for the gift given to us through the fulfillment and consummation of Jesus Christ. This is the truth engraved on the heart of the believer. Wisdom rejoices in what Jesus has accomplished. In the reality of humanity, who is incompetent, unable to accomplish anything, and who must be cursed, Jesus is the only joy that He has accomplished!
