<설교>

Chapter 17

My Beloved

What is thy beloved more than another beloved, O thou fairest among women? what is thy beloved more than another beloved, that thou dost so charge us?

My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand.

His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a raven.

His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, and fitly set.

His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: his lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh.

His hands are as gold rings set with the beryl: his belly is as bright ivory overlaid with sapphires.

His legs are as pillars of marble, set upon sockets of fine gold: his countenance is as Lebanon, excellent as the cedars.

His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem. (Song of Songs 5:9-16 KJV)

(Sermon)

A husband and a wife are connected by love with each other. However, no couple can say that their love is perfect. Although they are formed as a couple because of love, they sometimes show feelings of hatred, disappointment, anger, etc. for each other. What this means is that love is self-centered. Because they are egocentric, they react with feelings of disappointment and regret when they think that the other person is not reaching their will.

The way to solve this is to show complete love to either the man or the woman. So, even if either side does something disappointing, the other would just have to show the perfection of loving the partner to the end. Yet, as I said, there is no such thing as perfect love in the world. Only love from heaven is perfect. Those who belong to this love and are called as bride are believers. Thus, what a believer must think about is what it is to be a bride in perfect love.

Verse 9 says, “What is thy beloved more than another beloved, O thou fairest among women? what is thy beloved more than another beloved, that thou dost so charge us?”

The preceding text ends with the woman looking for her lover and asking her friends to tell him, 'When I looked for my beloved, I got ill because I love him.' And Verse 9 is what her friends ask, ‘what is it that your loved one is better than the ones others love?’, and Verses 10-16 are talking about the betterment of the one she loves. Simply put, it can be said that the woman is proud of the man.

However, the content of pride is not easy to access because it's not a typical male brag. If you look into the woman's manly brags, it speaks of his whole body, starting from his head to his legs, pride filled with expressions of appearance. The problem is that the expression of appearance is not at all realistic. So no matter how much you read the woman's pride in the man, nothing is portrayed as a handsome man who can be proud of.

Verse 11 says, “His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a raven.” What does a head like that of pure gold look like? It's understandable that his hair is thick and black, but it's hard to say that he is better than someone else's loved one because there will be many men with dark, squishy hair. And in Verse 12, like a dove by a brook of snow, like a dove washed with milk, is an expression that blocks our imagination altogether.

In the saying, “Hands are like a golden plaything with topaz, and his body is like ivory covered with sapphire, his legs are like pillars of stone set on a base of pure gold, and his appearance is like Lebanon, and like cedar, as good as he looks” (Verses 14 and 15), I can't even imagine what a man would look like. As such, it can be said that, above all, the woman's boasting about the man completely blocks our imaginary approach.

It is difficult to find and explain the meaning of each expression of the man in the text. What I want to focus on in this passage is our perspective on each other because what the man says about the woman is similar to how the woman views the man.

In Song of Songs 4:1-5, the man speaks of the woman. In Verse 1, it starts with the words, ‘My love, you are beautiful,’ but if you look at the content, you can’t imagine a pretty woman just like the verse. That her eyes are like a dove is the same as the woman's expression of the man.

Her hair is expressed as a herd of goats lying at the foot of Mount Gilead, and you cannot imagine a woman with beautiful hair from these words. In this way, it can be said that the expression of the man and the woman towards each other has a uniqueness that blocks and disallows access by imagining in our own way.

One thing to think about here is that the woman looks at the man with the same eyes that the man finds to be pretty. It is to brag about each other in a way that the world cannot understand. This is the relationship between Christ as the Groom and the believer as the bride. Just as Jesus does not look at the bride with the eyes of the world, the bride must also not look at the groom through the eyes of the world.

We become the bride of Jesus Christ because we have received the grace of forgiveness on the cross of the Lord. It is through the grace of covering all our transgressions and making us a holy and clean bride. In this way, just as Jesus looked at us through the eyes of the life that He had accomplished on the cross and said that we are holy, we must also look at Him from the eyes of the cross that He has accomplished. It is natural that the world cannot understand the pride of such a believer about Jesus Christ as the bridegroom because the world has different points of view on boasting.

If the woman boasted of the man with the same eyes as the world, she should have said that the one she loves is the king, that he is the richest person in the world, and that she is the woman of a such man. Then we would have understood the woman’s pride in the man. Yet, the woman never talks about his status or power in the world because she has the same eyes as the groom.

Jesus Christ did not call us outwardly. Hence, we cannot treat Him with outward appearances. If we think of Him as someone who fills in the shortcomings of our appearance and helps us to become a prominent existence in the world, then we are looking at Christ with a different perspective from that of Him, who made us His bride. When things in the world don't go according to your will, to think that His help is not there is to view Him, the Bridegroom, by His outward appearance. This is a different perspective from that of His.

Verse 16 says, “His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.”

When the woman says that all of the man is pretty and she says that the whole of the man is lovely, it can be said that the woman is in love with the man. To the woman, the whole of the man is lovingly approached. This is the relationship between the bride and groom by love.

We are in the love of Jesus Christ on the cross. Without His such love, we have no choice but to go to hell as a cursed being. But Jesus, who came to us through love, said that we are perfect and allowed us to be in heaven. To those who are in this love, He is all love. I hope and pray that you will look at Christ with this view and that love will be everything for you!
