<설교>

Chapter 134

The Book of the Lord

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.

And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.

Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.

And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made. (Exodus 32:30-35 KJV)

(Sermon)

Although believers are the ones who believe in the Bible as the Word of God, the one thing we shouldn’t forget is that the Bible shows us the work of God, which we can’t believe or understand. Thus, it is not that believers believe in the Bible because they understand it, but because they have come to believe in it as they believe in the work of God, which is good and faithful. Believers carry the joy of the knowledge of God as facing the work of God. We should also remind ourselves of the fact that such definition of ‘believers’ is different from what we usually think it is.

The work of God goes against our common knowledge, which we can see as we read it. Today’s passage proves it as well, regarding the people of Israel. Why would God let the three thousand Israelites slain by the Levites after He had said He wouldn’t destroy them for their idolatry? In addition, what about Moses, who pleads God for the forgiveness of the people? Such stories don’t match our common sense.

That’s why we can conclude that the Bible is incommunicable with the ways of thoughts of the world. Then, it should be true that believers can also be described as ones living incommunicable with the world. In other words, believers belong to what the world can’t comprehend.

What people in the world want is happiness that they earn by making their own efforts. That is, the reality of the world is the power of money, by which people are evaluated, in which believers are living. They have a different value from that of the world, unhappiness with no money and happiness with money. Can we say we are living as believers carrying such mind?

In Verses 32 and 33, there is a conversation between God and Moses, saying, “Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.”

Moses says if God forgives them not, he asks to remove his name out of the book of God. Is he threatening God or he is telling God he loves the people? Even if his name were blotted out of the book, the work of God wouldn’t be interrupted. Furthermore, if it were to show his love of the people to God, he shouldn’t have killed the three thousand. Such things, we can say, make us have trouble understanding about the book of the Lord.

We commonly think that blotting us out of the book of life is related to the matter of salvation, figuring out that we are saved if our names are written in the book and we are not if not. That’s why it is difficult to understand, ‘whoever sins against me, I will blot him out of my book’, worrying that it is possible to lose salvation.

Since God says to blot out one who sins against God, sinning not is the only way to keep our name in the book. If so, no name should be there. Moreover, if it’s the matter of sin, there is no possibility for our names to be written in the book at all because we are in sins.

In the Book of Revelation 3:5, it says, “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.”

What we can learn here is the same that the way of keeping our names in the book is overcoming sins. Thus, no name can be found in the book of life since all have sinned. Then, do you think it is biblical to teach repenting for salvation? It is nothing but vanity.

If so, how can we understand He blots one out of the book? One thing for sure is that no one can overcome sins. If we had been created to do so, Adam and Eve wouldn’t have eaten the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, meaning Jesus Christ wouldn’t have needed to die on the cross. God didn’t create man invincible to sins, implying all are in the power of sins. Thus, we must acknowledge no one can be recored in the book of the Lord.

In Revelation 13:8. It says, “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

Is recording the names in the book of life before or after creation of the world? It is before the foundation of the world according to Ephesians Chapter 1, Verses 4 and 5, “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.”

‘Before the creation of the world’ means before any works of men. In other words, the names in the book of life are written by the love of God in Christ, regardless of what they do. What’s more, it is the will of God that those who realize their names are written in the book of life come to praise God for the infinite grace of God, inscribed in Ephesians 1:6, “To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.”

Nonetheless, we would strive to obtain what we want from God by pleasing Him with our power, engrossed with our own pleasure. No one can deny it can easily be seen in the modern Christianity. Not knowing that God blots out one who sins against Him, we’d try to please Him in our own way, doing good deeds.

In the Book of Psalms 69:27-28, it says, “Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.”

‘Adding iniquity unto their iniquity’ means to ask God to keep exposing their sins lest they can be out of their sins. Why is the psalmist praying like this? It is because he knows no one can enter into the righteousness of God.

Pondering what we’ve been discussing so far, we can find what the Bible would never allow. It is the will of God that He would leave nothing but the righteousness of the blood of the Lamb, disregarding all that we consider righteous.

In Verses 34 and 35, it says, “Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them. And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.”

The golden calf was made for the people. In other words, living for ourselves is the sin God would repay. Thus, no name is recorded in the book of life without the grace of God, meaning no name is blotted out by sins either.

In this sense, ‘God will blot out’ doesn’t mean to tell us a possibility that one’s name is blotted out if one sins against God, but to ask us if we know there is no righteousness of man in the book of life. In other words, God speaks to the Israelites that it is the will of God that He would make them His people, lifting up the righteousness of God.

In the Book of Malachi 3:16, it say, “Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.”

His book is called a book of remembrance, meaning His book is written to remember the Lamb of God, not for our salvation. Therefore, believers are the ones who have been called by God for the remembrance of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, in the world!
