기독교인들이 하나님을 잘 안다고 생각한다면 그것은 큰 착각입니다. 하나님은 신비의 존재입니다. 그리고 인간은 신비를 뛰어 넘어 하나님을 파악하고 알 수 있는 존재가 되지 못합니다. 이것은 피조물 된 인간으로서 벗어날 수 없는 한계입니다.
우리는 하나님이 누구신가에 대한 모든 것을 알 수 없습니다. 사실 본문의 내용도 우리로서는 쉽게 납득이 되지 않습니다. 하나님이 사탄과 대화를 하신다는 것은 물론이고 ‘욥이 까닭 없이 하나님을 경외하지 않는다’는 사탄의 도발에 욥의 모든 소유물을 사탄의 손에 맡겨 버리신 내용들이 우리를 혼란스럽게 하는 것도 사실입니다.
물론 하나님이 사탄과 대화를 하시는 것이 실제 사건으로는 볼 수 없지만 어쨌든 성경은 우리의 사고와 이해에 동행하지 않는다는 것을 분명히 해야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 우리에게 있는 기존의 사고나 이해에 맞는 해석을 유추하는 일에 몰두할 것이기 때문입니다.
하나님은 신비이신데 성경은 하나님에 대해 증거합니다. 그러므로 성경에는 우리에게 신비를 전달하여 신비의 세계로 인도하고자 하는 하나님의 의도가 담겨 있다고 할 수 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 유한한 세상에서 자기 존재의 가치와 확장에 목적을 두고 성경을 보거나 하나님을 찾는 모든 것들은 성경이 거부한다는 것부터 명확히 해야 합니다.
지난주에 말씀드린 것처럼 욥기는 온전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하면 악에서 떠난 사람으로 시작합니다. 즉 욥기는 행위에 있어서는 무고하다고 할 수 있는 사람에 대한 이야기인 것입니다. 이처럼 욥이 어떤 사람인가에 대한 내용으로 시작한 이야기는 하나님과 사탄의 만남과 대화로 이어집니다.
하나님과 사탄의 대화에서의 주제는 욥에 대한 것입니다. 8절에서 “여호와께서 사탄에게 이르시되 네가 내 종 욥을 주의하여 보았느냐 그와 같이 온전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자는 세상에 없느니라”고 말씀하신 것처럼 하나님은 욥의 신앙에 대해 보증을 서시는 것처럼 단언하십니다.
하나님의 말씀에 사탄은 “욥이 어찌 까닭 없이 하나님을 경외하리이까 주께서 그와 그의 집과 그의 모든 소유물을 울타리로 두르심 때문이 아니니이까 주께서 그의 손으로 하는 바를 복되게 하사 그의 소유물이 땅에 넘치게 하셨음이니이다 이제 주의 손을 펴서 그의 모든 소유물을 치소서 그리하시면 틀림없이 주를 향하여 욕하지 않겠나이까”(9-11)는 말로 이의를 제기합니다.
사탄의 논지는 하나님이 욥이 하는 일들을 복되게 하셔서 그의 소유가 땅에 넘치게 하셨기 때문에 하나님을 경외한다는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 그의 모든 소유물을 치면 틀림없이 주를 향하여 욕하게 된다는 것입니다.
사탄의 말에 대해 하나님은 욥의 모든 소유물을 사탄의 손에 맡기십니다. 다만 욥의 몸에는 손을 대지 말라는 것이 하나님의 뜻입니다. 이로 인해서 욥에게는 무고한 자로서의 고난이 시작되는 것입니다.
우리의 시각에서는 욥이 억울하다고 생각될 수 있겠지만 그것이 곧 욥에게 근거와 이유를 두는 습성에 의한 것입니다. 무고한 자라면 고난을 당할 이유가 없다고 생각하는 것이 모든 일의 근거와 이유를 인간에게 두는 것이고 그것이 욥이 까닭 없이 하나님을 경외하지 않는다고 하고 사탄의 논지와 일치하는 것입니다.
사탄은 욥이 하나님을 경외하는 것을 조건적인 것으로 봅니다. 이것이 하나님을 경외하는 신앙에 대한 사탄의 생각입니다. 아무런 조건도 없이 하나님을 경외하는 신앙은 가능하지 않다고 보는 것입니다.
그렇다면 지금의 기독교인들이 신앙을 조건적인 것으로 이해한다면 그것은 무엇을 의미하는 것일까요? 가령 ‘신앙생활을 잘하면 복을 받는다’는 흔하게 들을 수 있는 말을 놓고 본다면 복은 조건적인 것이 됩니다. 누구든 복을 받았다면 신앙생활을 잘했기 때문이라는 의미가 되고, 복을 받지 못했다면 신앙생활에 문제가 있기 때문이라는 뜻이 됩니다.
이런 경우 하나님은 당연히 조건적인 분으로 인식이 될 것이고, 하나님을 신앙하고자 하는 것도 복을 받기 위한 조건에 의한 것이 됩니다. 이것이 사탄의 논지와 다르지 않다면 결국 드러나는 것은 조건적인 신앙, 즉 까닭 없이 하나님을 경외하지 않는다는 생각은 사탄의 사고라는 결론에 도달하는 것입니다.
다시 말해서 현대 교회가 신앙을 조건적인 것으로 인식한다면 그것이야 말로 사탄의 사고를 따르는 사탄적이 되는 것입니다. 그러므로 이것은 심각하고 중대한 문제로 부각되고 다루어져야 할 내용임을 주지해야 합니다.
하나님이 사탄에게 욥의 모든 소유물을 맡기시는 것은 욥이 하나님을 경외하는 이유가 넘치는 소유물에 있지 않음을 아셨기 때문입니다. 즉 사탄이 욥의 소유를 친다고 해서 하나님을 경외하는 욥의 마음이 바뀌지 않음을 아신 것입니다. 그렇다면 이것은 하나님이 욥을 믿으시는 것일까요?
표면적으로 보면 하나님은 욥을 믿으시는 것처럼 보입니다. 만약 그렇다면 욥이 하나님과 바른 관계에 있고 구원을 얻는 모든 것이 욥의 의로 모아지게 됩니다. 어떤 일에서도 범죄 하지 않으려는 욥의 의지, 심지어 순식간에 열 명의 자녀와 모든 소유를 잃어버리는 엄청난 재난에서도 범죄 하지 않고 하나님을 원망하지 않는 욥의 인내와 신앙이 이야기의 초점이 되는 것입니다.
21절에 보면 재난을 겪게 된 욥이 “이르되 내가 모태에서 알몸으로 나왔사온즉 또한 알몸이 그리로 돌아가올지라 주신 이도 여호와시요 거두신 이도 여호와시오니 여호와의 이름이 찬송을 받으실지니이다 하고”라고 말합니다.
우리는 욥의 이러한 말을 신앙의 절정으로 생각합니다. 그리고 자연스럽게 욥과 같은 신앙을 본받자는 말을 하게 됩니다. 이처럼 1장에 등장하는 욥의 행동과 신앙은 전혀 부족함이 없는 완벽한 모습으로 표현되고 있습니다. 따라서 욥의 구원도 당연하다고 생각하는 것이 일반적입니다.
하지만 욥이 하나님을 경외한 것이 믿음이었다면 그 믿음으로 하나님으로부터 말미암은 것입니다. 즉 욥이 하나님을 경외하게 된 것은 그가 하나님에 의해 붙들려 있었기 때문입니다. 따라서 욥이 재난에서도 원망하지 않은 것은 하나님이 주신 믿음에 의한 것입니다.
그러나 욥이 하나님이 누구시가를 아는 온전한 관계에 있었던 것은 아닙니다. 그것은 자신에게는 고통을 겪을 이유가 없다는 욥의 말에서 드러납니다. 결국 욥도 고통의 이유를 자신에게서 찾은 것입니다. 하지만 자신에게는 고통의 이유가 없다고 생각하였기 때문에 자신의 현재를 이해할 수 없었던 것입니다. 이렇게 욥도 자신의 이해의 틀에서 하나님을 생각했음을 알 수 있습니다. 이것이 욥의 모습이었고 오늘 우리의 현재이기도 합니다.
욥기서는 욥의 고난을 도구로 해서 사탄의 속성이 무엇이며 인간이 이해하는 신앙 세계의 잘못됨을 드러냅니다. 그리고 하나님이 욥에게 알게 하시는 하나님에 대한 이해를 통해서 무엇이 하나님과 바른 관계에서 하나님을 경험하며 살아가는 것인가를 제시하는 것입니다.
욥기서를 살펴 가면 신앙에 대한 우리의 잘못된 이해가 드러나게 될 것입니다. 완벽한 신앙의 모습을 보여준 욥에게도 잘못된 이해가 있음을 생각해 보면 우리 역시도 잘못된 이해의 틀로 하나님을 섬긴다고 하고 있음을 주지해야 합니다.
욥에게 닥친 고난은 사탄의 잘못된 속성을 드러내는 기회가 되었습니다. 이것을 위해서 사탄이 욥의 소유를 치는 것을 허락하신 것입니다. 복과 화의 조건이 인간에게 있다는, 즉 인과응보라는 가장 합리적인 것처럼 여겨지는 생각이 사실은 하나님과의 관계를 훼방하고 하나님께로 나아가는 길을 흔드는 사탄적 사고라는 것이 욥의 고난으로 드러난 것입니다.
종교는 오직 자신만을 추구합니다. 모든 조건과 까닭과 이유를 자신에게서 찾습니다. 이러한 종교 세계에서는 하나님과의 진실 된 만남에 관심을 두지 않습니다. 자신이 잘하면 모든 문제는 해결된다고 생각하기 때문입니다.
반면에 신앙은 자신의 모든 조건이 무너지는 것입니다. 그리고 생명과 구원과 복의 조건이 예수님께 있음을 믿습니다. 모든 것이 하나님의 무조건적인 은혜의 사건임을 믿기에 예수님의 행하심만을 바라보게 되는 것입니다. 이로 인해서 하나님과의 깊은 관계로 들어가게 되는 것입니다. 이것이 사심 없는 진실 된 신앙이라는 사실을 욥을 통해 드러내시는 것입니다.
Chapter 2
Satan's Point
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. (Job 1:6-12 KJV)

If you think christians know who God is well, it is a big mistake. God is a mysterious Being and men can't find out who God is by overcoming the mystery. This is a limit of men as creatures.
We can't know of God for everything. In fact, the passage we read today is not understandable, either. It is true that we are confounded by not only the conversation between God and Satan but also the fact that God let Satan handle all of Job's possession after his accusation of Job.
Although the conversation between God and Satan may not be a real event, we should make sure the fact that the Bible doesn't get along with our thoughts. Otherwise, we might have to focus on interpreting it according to the way of our own thoughts and understandings.
God is a Mystery. Yet, the Bible testifies Him to us. Thus, the Bible contains God's intention that He would deliver us into the world of His mystery. Therefore, we must know that the Bible denies all attempts that people read it or seek God for the enhancement of their names or expansion of power in the world.
As I told you last week, the Book of Job begins with Job, who was perfect and upright, and feared God, and eschewed evil. In other words, we can say the Book is about a story of a man who has no fault in acts. After introducing us who Job is, the story goes into the conversation between God and Satan.
The topic of the conversation is of Job. God vouches Job's faith by saying in Verse 8, "Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?"
Satan says to God in Verses 9 to 11 for his argument, "Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face."
The point of Satan is that Job reveres God because God has blessed him for his work and increased his possession. Thus, if God removes what he has, Satan says Job will curse God.
Then, God let Satan be in control of his possession, but it was the will of God that Satan wouldn't touch his body. This is how innocent Job began to have afflictions.
We might think it was unfair for Job, but it is our habitual way of thoughts that we put sources and reasons of afflictions on Job, thinking that an innocent person shouldn't have difficulties in life, which doesn't differ from Satan's point, putting sources and reasons of all things on men.
Satan looked at Job's faith in God as a condition. This is what Satan thinks of faith, believing that there is no possibility to trust in God with no condition.
Then, if modern christians think faith is up to a condition, what does that mean? For instance, we can often hear, 'if you live in faith well, you will be blessed', which means that receiving a blessing is a condition. If one has received a blessing, it means one has lived in faith well, and if one hasn't, one has had a problem with one's life of faith.
In this sense, God is understood according to the condition and living faith well is to receive blessings. If what has been described above is not different from Satan's point, what is revealed here is that we can come to a conclusion that no worshiping God without any reason is the very thought of Satan's.
In other words, if in modern Christianity, one says living in faith depends on a condition, it is satanic, following his way of thinking. Thus, it is so significant that we pay extra attention on the matter.
The reason why God let Satan be in control of Job's possession is that God knew his faith in God was not in his possession. That is, He knew job wouldn't change his mind even if he lost everything that he had. If so, can we say that God trusted Job?
Ostensibly, God seemed to trust Job. If that were true, Job's relationship with God and his salvation would support him and add his righteousness unto him more for his testimonial. His strong will, trying not to sin against God, and having no complaint against God when he lost his ten children and all that he had would testify his faith and heroic story.
In Verse 21, it says, "And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."
We tend to think Job's words here are the peak of faith, causing us to say to emulate his faith. Likewise, Chapter 1 depicts Job as a perfect man. Consequently, it is common sense in us that he deserves to be saved.
Yet, if Job's revering God is his faith, we should remember the faith is from God. In other words, his revering God is from the fact that he is captured by God. As a result, that he didn't complain against God in predicament is of his faith that God gave him.
However, it was not true that he was in the right relationship with God, which is proven when he said there was no reason for him to have such hardships. He also sought for the reason of having hard time in himself. He couldn't understand his situation as he thought he had no reason for the hardships. We can find that Job thought of God in his own way of thinking as well. This is who Job was and this is who we are now.
The Book of Job exposes what the characteristic of Satan and our misunderstanding of faith are through the tool, the hardships of Job. Furthermore, God speaks to us what the true relationship with God is through teaching him who God is.
As meditating the Book, we are going to be revealed of our misunderstanding of faith. We mustn't forget that we would worship God in a wrong way since we have seen Job, perfect and innocent, had a misconception of God as well.
The afflictions that came to Job are an opportunity to reveal who Satan is. For this reason, God let Satan be in control of his possession. A statement that a condition of a blessing and a curse is up to us, what goes around comes around, is revealed by his afflictions as a satanic thought that hinders the relationship with God and shakes up the way to God.
Religions only pursue 'myself', seeking for all the conditions and reasons in men themselves. People in religions have absolutely no interest in the true relationship with God at all, assuming, 'everything is up to what I do.'
On the contrary, faith is to destroy all our conditions and to let us believe that the condition of life and salvation is in Christ, knowing that all is from the unconditional grace of God, causing us to look up to Jesus Christ only. Therefore, we are led to the deep relationship with God, who shows us through Job that this is what the true faith is!
