1.또 하루는 하나님의 아들들이 와서 여호와 앞에 서고 사탄도 그들 가운데에 와서 여호와 앞에 서니
2.여호와께서 사탄에게 이르시되 네가 어디서 왔느냐 사탄이 여호와께 대답하여 이르되 땅을 두루 돌아 여기 저기 다녀 왔나이다
3.여호와께서 사탄에게 이르시되 네가 내 종 욥을 주의하여 보았느냐 그와 같이 온전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자가 세상에 없느니라 네가 나를 충동하여 까닭 없이 그를 치게 하였어도 그가 여전히 자기의 온전함을 굳게 지켰느니라
4.사탄이 여호와께 대답하여 이르되 가죽으로 가죽을 바꾸오니 사람이 그의 모든 소유물로 자기의 생명을 바꾸올지라
5.이제 주의 손을 펴서 그의 뼈와 살을 치소서 그리하시면 틀림없이 주를 향하여 욕하지 않겠나이까
6.여호와께서 사탄에게 이르시되 내가 그를 네 손에 맡기노라 다만 그의 생명은 해하지 말지니라

사탄의 시험으로 인해서 욥의 믿음은 조건적인 것이 아니며 대가나 보상을 바라지 않는 진실 된 것이었음이 확인되었습니다. 하지만 사탄은 욥의 믿음에 대해 수긍하고 받아들이지 않고 2차 도발을 하는 것이 본문의 내용입니다.
상황은 다시 사탄이 하나님을 만나는 장면으로 돌아갑니다. 그리고 하나님이 사탄에게 “네가 내 종 욥을 주의하여 보았느냐 그와 같이 온전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자가 세상에 없느니라 네가 나를 충동하여 까닭 없이 그를 치게 하였어도 그가 여전히 자기의 온전함을 굳게 지켰느니라”(3절)는 말로 욥의 믿음은 조건적이 아님을 확인시킵니다.
욥의 믿음은 분명 조건적인 것이 아니었습니다. 사탄이 욥의 믿음의 조건으로 여겼던 모든 소유를 쳐서 다 잃게 하였음에도 불구하고 욥이 하나님을 향하여 원망하지 않음으로 확인되었다고 할 수 있습니다.
그런데도 사탄은 무조건적인 욥의 믿음에 대해 수긍하지 않고 재차 도발을 합니다. 조건이 없는 믿음은 가능하지 않다는 것이 사탄의 생각인 것입니다. 이와 같은 사탄의 사고방식에 의해서 드러난 것은 현대 기독교가 이해하는 신앙의 내용이 실제는 사탄적일 수가 있다는 것입니다. 그것이 바로 사탄처럼 신앙을 조건적이며 보상적인 것으로 이해하는 것입니다.
이러한 말에 대해 많은 분들이 반발할 수 있음을 충분히 예상합니다. 하지만 믿음에 대한 이해와 사고가 사탄의 생각과 본질이 동일하다면 깊이 심사숙고하며 고민해봐야 할 문제임은 분명합니다. 만약 우리가 생각하는 믿음의 내용이 사탄의 이해와 다르지 않다면 사탄도 스스로 하나님을 믿는 믿음이 가능하다는 뜻이 되기 때문입니다.
사탄이 욥을 치는 것을 허용하심으로 욥은 열 명의 자식과 모든 소유를 잃게 됩니다. 사탄이 말한 믿음의 조건이 모두 무너진 것입니다. 따라서 사탄의 생각대로라면 욥은 하나님은 원망해야 합니다.
하지만 “이 모든 일에 욥이 범죄하지 아니하고 하나님을 향하여 원망하지 아니하니라”(욥 1:22)고 말하는 것처럼 욥은 하나님에 대한 자기의 온전함을 굳게 지킵니다. 이것으로 믿음은 조건적이라는 사탄의 생각이 잘못되었음이 드러납니다.
그런데 사탄은 순순히 자신의 잘못된 이해를 인정하고 받아들이지 않습니다. 끝까지 믿음은 조건적이라는 자기 뜻을 굽히지 않는 것입니다. 사탄은 다시 욥에게서 빼앗을 것을 찾습니다. 그것이 바로 욥 자신이었습니다.
4,5절을 보면 “사탄이 여호와께 대답하여 이르되 가죽으로 가죽을 바꾸오니 사람이 그의 모든 소유물로 자기의 생명을 바꾸올지라 이제 주의 손을 펴서 그의 뼈와 살을 치소서 그리하시면 틀림없이 주를 향하여 욕하지 않겠나이까”라고 말합니다.
가죽으로 가죽을 바꾼다는 것은 일종의 교환의 원칙이라고 할 수 있습니다. 즉 물건을 교환할 때 자기의 것보다 가치가 없는 것과 교환하지 않는다는 뜻입니다. 다시 말해서 사람에게 가장 중요한 것은 자신이기 때문에 소유를 다 잃는다 해도 자기 전부를 잃는 것은 아니며 따라서 자신이 조건이 되어 하나님을 경외할 수도 있다는 것입니다. 이런 이유로 사탄은 욥의 뼈와 살을 치면 틀림없이 주를 향하여 욕을 할 것이라는 자신감을 드러냅니다.
사람이 자식과 함께 모든 소유를 잃고 심지어 견딜 수 없는 고통을 동반한 질병을 앓게 된다면 말 그대로 절망적인 상태에 빠졌다고 할 수 있습니다. 그런 상황에서 하나님을 향한 마음이 흔들리지 않고 지탱이 된다면 참으로 놀라운 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 사탄은 그럴 사람이 없다고 자신하는 것입니다.
사탄의 도발적인 충동에 대해 하나님은 욥의 생명은 해하지 말라는 말씀과 함께 욥을 사탄의 손에 맡깁니다. 생명을 주관하시는 분은 하나님이기에 생명은 허락하지 않으신 것으로 이해할 수 있습니다.
이제 욥은 사탄에게 맡겨진 상태에서 사탄이 욥을 마음대로 칠 수가 있습니다. 그런데 한 가지 분명한 것은 사탄에 의해 욥의 운명이 바뀌지 않는다는 것입니다. 다시 말해서 하나님을 경외하는 신앙의 길에 있는 욥이 사탄의 시험으로 인해 그 길이 뒤바뀌는 일은 없다는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 욥은 하나님의 책임 아래 있기 때문입니다. 사탄은 이것을 생각하지 못한 것입니다.
사탄이 욥의 신앙을 조건적인 것으로 본 것은 욥이 스스로의 결단과 의지로 하나님을 신앙한다고 여겼기 때문입니다. 즉 신자의 믿음의 가능성과 힘이 신자 본인에게 있는 것으로 간주한 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 믿음을 가능하게 하는 고리를 끊어 버리면 욥은 반드시 하나님을 욕할 것으로 판단하는 것입니다. 이것이 곧 믿음의 주체가 누구인가를 인식하지 못한 어리석음의 결과입니다.
그렇다면 우리는 욥의 믿음에 대한 시선을 욥이 아니라 하나님께로 돌려야 합니다. 믿음의 주체는 인간이 아니라 하나님께 있고 믿음이 가능한 이유 또한 인간이 아니라 하나님께 있기 때문입니다. 그래서 욥이 사탄의 어떤 시험에 부딪혀도 하나님을 욕하고 하나님으로부터 돌아서지 않을 것을 믿는 것입니다.
이것은 욥이라고 하는 인간의 신앙의 의지와 결단을 믿는 것이 아니라 욥을 붙들고 계시는 하나님을 믿는 것입니다. 하나님의 책임 아래 있는 욥이 사탄이 장담한 것처럼 하나님을 욕하고 돌아선다면 그것은 욥의 실패가 아니라 하나님의 실패가 되기 때문입니다. 그래서 우리는 욥이 고통을 견디며 결국 하나님을 알아가는 모든 과정 속에서 욥을 보는 것이 아니라 욥에게 일하신 하나님을 보게 되는 것입니다.
욥의 배후에는 하나님이 계십니다. 하지만 욥이 처음에는 배후에 하나님이 계신다는 의미를 이해하지 못했습니다. 다만 신앙의 온전함을 위해 최선의 노력을 다하고 범죄 하지 않아야 한다는 철저함으로만 가득했을 뿐입니다.
이것을 보면 욥은 믿음의 길을 자기 홀로 가는 것으로 인식했던 것이 아닌가 생각됩니다. 그리고 하나님이 욥을 찾아와 말씀하셨을 때 비로소 자기 홀로 가는 길이 아니라 하나님이 동행하시는 길이었고 믿음의 가능성 또한 하나님께 있었음을 알게 된 것으로 이해할 수 있습니다.
그렇게 보면 욥은 하나님이 동행하시는 믿음의 길에서 자신은 아무것도 아님을 깨닫게 된 것이고, 이것을 알게 되었을 때 친구들 앞에서 자신의 무고함만을 주장했던 모습들이 부끄러움으로 다가왔을 것입니다. 이것이 욥이 회개한 이유이고 하나님 경험입니다.
우리는 이러한 과정들을 보면서 믿음에 대한 우리의 잘못된 이해와 보지 못하고 놓치고 있는 것을 찾아내는 것이 욥기서를 보면서 얻을 수 있는 성과일 것입니다. 믿음에 대한 우리의 착각과 오해와 실수들이 사탄과 욥과 욥의 친구들을 통해서 낱낱이 폭로되고 있기 때문입니다.
사탄이 욥의 발바닥에서 정수리까지 종기가 나게 합니다. 이로 인해서 재 가운데 앉아 질그릇 조각으로 몸을 긁는 형편까지 되었지만 우리는 욥이 겪은 고통을 현실적으로 이해하기가 힘듭니다. 동일한 상황을 겪어 보지 않았기 때문입니다.
하지만 욥기가 우리에게 말하고자 하는 것은 욥의 고통을 이해하고 공감함으로써 우리 또한 고통과 어려움이 있는 형편과 상황에서 낙심하지 않고 욥처럼 견디라는 것이 아닙니다. 앞에서 말씀드린 것처럼 욥기를 보면서 스스로에 대해 점검해야 할 것은 하나님과의 관계입니다.
욥은 범죄 하지 않음으로 하나님과 바른 관계에 있다고 생각했을 것입니다. 누구라도 욥처럼 행동한다면 그러한 생각을 하지 않을 수 없습니다. 그런데 신자가 하나님과 바른 관계에 있을 때 드러나는 것은 자신의 무가치함입니다. 이것이 욥에게는 없었던 것입니다. 그러므로 욥 본인은 하나님과 바른 관계에 있다고 생각했을지언정 하나님은 그렇게 보지 않으신 것입니다. 그래서 욥에게 오셔서 욥으로 하여금 자신이 누구인가를 보게 하신 것입니다.
시 14:1절에 보면 “어리석은 자는 그의 마음에 이르기를 하나님이 없다 하는도다 그들은 부패하고 그 행실이 가증하니 선을 행하는 자가 없도다”라고 말씀합니다.
우리가 입술로는 하나님이 계신다고 외치면서도 실제로는 ‘하나님이 없다’는 것을 보여주는 자로 행동할 수 있습니다. 이것이 마음으로 하나님이 없다고 하는 어리석은 사람의 실상입니다. 여러분의 마음이 하나님이 계신다고 외친다면 여러분에게 동행하시는 하나님을 만나십시오. 그렇게 동행하시는 하나님께 믿음의 모든 가능성을 두는 것이 참된 믿음의 사람입니다.
Chapter 3
Satan's Repeated Temptations
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.
And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. (Job 2:1-6 KJV)

Job's faith was proven true through Satan's temptation that it was not conditional and it was not for rewards. Yet, Satan didn't accept it as it was and tried to provoke him again, which is what today's passage is about.
The scene goes back to the conversation between God and Satan. God verifies Satan that his faith was not conditional by saying in Verse 3, "Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause."
It was certain that his faith was not conditional. We can say it was proven by his not charging God with wrongdoing in the situation that God let Satan take all that he had.
Nevertheless, Satan wouldn't acknowledge it and would try to hit his faith again, thinking that unconditional faith can't exist. This tells us that what many people in modern Christianity think faith is could be satanic. That is, the understanding that faith is conditional and for rewards.
I am sure many would disagree with what I have just said above. However, it is for sure that we must think it through if our thought of faith is not fundamentally different from that of Satan. It is because if our thought and Satan's of faith are alike, it could mean Satan would believe in God.
We have seen that Job came to lose his ten children and all his possessions by God, letting Satan do such. What Satan said was proven wrong. Thus, we can find Job would have charged God with wrongdoings if Satan were right.
Yet, he kept his intactness by saying in Job 1:22, "In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing." By this, the understanding of Satan that his faith is conditional is wrong.
Yet, Satan wouldn't admit that he is wrong, persisting that faith is conditional. Thus, Satan found one more from Job to attack. That is, Job himself.
In Verses 4 and 5, it says, "And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face."
'Skin for skin' could be viewed as the principle of exchange, which means that no one would exchange more value for less. In other words, Satan is saying that since what is the most important thing for one is oneself, one hasn't lost everything yet even if one has lost one's all possessions. According to this, Satan is confident that Job would curse God if God would hit his body.
If one has lost all one owns and acquired a disease with great pain, we can say that one is in nothing but despair. If one's faith doesn't falter in that kind of situation, we can be sure that the faith is just amazing and nothing else. Satan was assured that no one would prove such.
God let Satan hit his body except his life, meaning that God is the only One controlling life.
Now, Satan can touch Job as he wishes. Yet, one thing for sure is that the destiny of Job would never be changed by Satan. In other words, his faith can never become something else other than the faith by his temptations because Job was under God's guidance, which Satan wasn't aware of.
Why Satan thought his faith was conditional was because he thought Job would believe in God on his own determination and wills. That is, Satan thought the possibility to produce faith and power of if was on the person. Thus, he calculated that if he would break the possibility, Job would curse God. This is the absurd result of the ignorance of who the subject of faith is.
Then, when we look at Job's faith, we have to turn our eyes to God from Job because the subject of faith is not us but God and the reason of the possibility of faith is not on us but God as well. Thus, We can know that Job wouldn't turn from God in spite of all the hardships.
It doesn't mean we believe Job's will and determination but means we believe in God, holding Job. If Job, held by God, were to turn from God, it wouldn't be his failure but God's. Therefore, we can see who God is, leading him over all the situations, not Job.
There is God behind Job. Yet, Job wasn't aware God was behind him then. Instead, he was in full of thoughts that he would do his best to maintain his integrity for God, worshipping and not sinning and so forth.
In this sense, we can assume that Job thought he was on the way of faith alone, and he realized he wasn't alone and God had been with him and the possibility of his faith was on God, when God came to speak to him at the end of the Book.
Keeping that in mind, we can learn that Job came to know that he was nothing valuable before God on the way of faith, cognizing the shame that he insisted on his innocency before his friends. This is the reason he repented and the experience he had of God for himself.
As we are looking through these processes, it will be useful that we can find out what our misunderstandings of faith are and what we are missing in life because God is revealing all described above through Satan, Job and his friends in depth.
Satan made Job have painful sores from head to foot, so Job had to scrape himself with a piece of broken pottery, which we can't fully comprehend due to the fact that we don't have the same situation.
Yet, what the Book of Job is telling us about is not to tell us that we need to bear and not to despair in all the hardships through the understanding of Job's situations. As spoken earlier, what we need to do while meditating the Book is to look into ourselves for the relationship with God.
Job must have thought he was in the right relationship with God by not sinning. If anyone had done the same thing that Job did, he or she would have thought of the same as what he had in his mind, without an exception. Yet, what is truly revealed when one is in the right relationship with God is to realize valuelessness of oneself, which is the absence in Job. Thus, even if Job thought he was in the right relationship with God, God didn't. That's why God came to let him see himself.
In Psalm 14:1, it says, "The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good."
We could live a life, proving, "there is no God", while saying there is God. This is the reality of a fool, saying in mind that there is no God. Do you cry out that there is God? If so, meet with God, who walks with you. A man of true faith is the one that puts all the possibilities of faith on God and God only!
