2.진실로 내가 이 일이 그런 줄을 알거니와 인생이 어찌 하나님 앞에 의로우랴
3.사람이 하나님께 변론하기를 좋아할지라도 천 마디에 한 마디도 대답하지 못하리라
4.그는 마음이 지혜로우시고 힘이 강하시니 그를 거슬러 스스로 완악하게 행하고도 형통할 자가 누구이랴
5.그가 진노하심으로 산을 무너뜨리시며 옮기실지라도 산이 깨닫지 못하며
6.그가 땅을 그 자리에서 움직이시니 그 기둥들이 흔들리도다
7.그가 해를 명령하여 뜨지 못하게 하시며 별들을 가두시도다
8.그가 홀로 하늘을 펴시며 바다 물결을 밟으시며
9.북두성과 삼성과 묘성과 남방의 밀실을 만드셨으며
10.측량할 수 없는 큰 일을, 셀 수 없는 기이한 일을 행하시느니라

욥은 자신이 왜 재앙을 겪어야 하는지 그 이유를 모릅니다. 우리는 성경을 통해서 욥의 재앙이 사탄이 하나님께 욥의 신앙에 대해 시비를 걸었기 때문으로 알고 있지만 욥은 그 사실에 대해 전혀 알지 못하고 있습니다. 그렇다면 우리는 욥의 상황을 보면서 인생에 대한 분명한 답을 알았다고 할 수 있을까요?
욥의 재앙이 어떻게 시작되었는지는 성경이 분명히 말하기 때문에 알 수가 있습니다. 하지만 그것으로 인생의 답을 알았다고 할 수 없습니다. 인생을 살면서 겪는 고통의 일들을 모두 ‘나의 신앙을 두고 사탄이 하나님께 시비를 걸었기 때문이다’라고 생각할 수는 없기 때문입니다.
설령 고통의 시작이 사탄 때문이고 그것을 우리가 알았다 할지라도 사탄의 시비에 하나님이 반응하신 이유에 대해서는 알지 못합니다. 그렇다면 그것은 고통의 이유를 안다고 할 수 없습니다. 이것이 우리의 인생입니다. 왜 이렇게 살아야 하는지 이유를 모른 채 살아가는 것이 인생인 것입니다.
그래서 사람은 누구나 자기 인생에 대해 답답함과 함께 불만을 갖게 됩니다. 또한 앞으로의 인생이 어떻게 되고 무슨 일이 있을지 모르기 때문에 염려와 불안감을 갖게 됩니다. 마치 인생이 자신이 넘을 수 없는 커다란 벽으로 가로 막힌 것 같은 절망을 느끼기도 할 것입니다.
욥은 아마 자신의 인생 자체가 송두리째 무너졌다고 생각할 것입니다. 1장에서 말한 것처럼 하나님을 경외하면서 죄에서 떠난 자로 온전하고 정직하게 사는 인생을 원했고 또 그렇게 살아가고 있었는데 그 모든 삶이 무너지고 사라졌기 때문입니다. 결국 욥에게 남는 것은 원망이었습니다.
과거의 욥을 생각한다면 자신에게서 원망이 나온다는 것은 상상도 할 수 없는 일이었을 것입니다. 입술로도 범죄 하지 않아야 한다는 것이 욥의 신앙이고 의지였기 때문입니다. 그렇게 보면 자신이 고통을 겪어야 하는 이유도 알지 못한 상태에서 하나님께는 입술로도 범죄 하지 않아야 한다고 생각했던 것과는 다르게 원망을 하는 자신을 보면서 크게 절망했을 거라는 짐작을 해 볼 수 있습니다.
그런데 욥기를 보면 하나님이 왜 사탄의 시비를 받아주면서 욥을 치도록 허락을 하셨는지에 대해서는 답을 주지 않습니다. 반면에 욥이 하나님을 만난 후에 자신이 고통을 당해야 하는 문제에 대해서는 전혀 묻지 않습니다.
자신이 왜 고통을 겪어야 하는지 이유를 알지 못해 답답해했던 것을 생각하면 하나님을 만났을 때 가장 먼저 그것을 물었어야 하지 않을까요? 그렇게 보면 욥이 자신의 문제에 대해 묻지 않고 알고자 하지도 않은 것은 고통의 이유를 알았기 때문이 아니라 자신의 인생이 하나님께 붙들려 있음을 알게 된 것으로 충분함을 깨달았기 때문이 아닐까 생각됩니다.
본문에서 욥은 하나님에 대해 말합니다. 그리고 욥이 말한 하나님에 대한 내용들은 틀린 것이 없습니다. 만약 ‘하나님에 대해 말하시오’라는 시험 문제에 대한 답으로 제출한 것이라면 모두 정답으로 인정되었을 것입니다. 우리가 알고 있는 하나님에 대한 지식에서 어긋난 말이 없기 때문입니다.
여기서 우리가 한 가지 주지할 사실은 누구든 하나님에 대해 맞는 말을 했다고 해서 그가 하나님을 안다고 할 수 없다는 것입니다. 하나님을 아는 것은 지식의 문제가 아니라 관계 문제이기 때문입니다. 이것은 욥이 지금 하나님에 대해 맞는 말을 했다고 해서 그가 하나님을 아는 관계에 있다고 할 수 없는 것으로 드러난다고 할 수 있습니다.
2절에서 욥은 “진실로 내가 이 일이 그런 줄을 알거니와 인생이 어찌 하나님 앞에 의로우랴”고 말합니다. 어떤 인생도 하나님 앞에서 의롭지 못합니다. 기독교인 누구라도 그렇게 인정할 것입니다. 문제는 하나님 앞에 의롭지 않은 인간으로 존재하느냐는 것입니다.
이것은 매일 ‘하나님 저는 죄인입니다’라는 고백을 하며 사는지를 묻는 것이 아닙니다. 인생이 하나님 앞에 의롭지 않음을 안다는 것은 자신이 의도하고 행하는 모든 것이 하나님 앞에 의롭지 않음을 아는 것까지 포함한 것입니다. 그렇다면 우리가 자기 인생에 대해 자기의 뜻을 세우고 그 뜻을 위해 살고자 하는 것도 의롭지 않은 것입니다.
그런데 욥은 자기 인생에 대해 답답한 마음을 가지고 있습니다. 의롭지 않다고 하면서도 한편으로는 고통이 주어질 죄를 범한 적이 없다고 생각하는 것입니다. 인생이 의롭지 않다고 하면서도 자기 인생을 두고 하나님께 ‘왜 이렇게 하십니까?’라고 반문할 자격조차 없음을 모르는 것입니다.
2절 이후의 내용에서도 욥은 하나님의 지혜와 강하심과 천지를 주관하시는 위대하심에 대해 말합니다. 3,4절에서 “사람이 하나님께 변론하기를 좋아할지라도 천 마디에 한 마디도 대답하지 못하리라 그는 마음이 지혜로우시고 힘이 강하시니 그를 거슬러 스스로 완악하게 행하고도 형통할 자가 누구이랴”는 말도 하나님을 지극히 높이는 말이라고 할 수 있습니다.
사람이 하나님께 변론하기를 좋아해도 천 마디에 한마디도 대답하지 못한다면 하나님이 하신 일은 그만큼 신비로우며 완전하다는 뜻으로 이해할 수 있습니다. 그런데 이러한 말이 하나님이시기에 감히 인간이 알 수 없는 위대한 일을 행하시는 것으로 높이는 언어적 묘사일 뿐이라는 것입니다.
5절부터도 욥은 산과 땅과 해와 하늘과 바다와 별들을 언급하면서 그 모든 것을 다스리시고 움직이시는 하나님을 “측량할 수 없는 큰 일을, 셀 수 없는 기이한 일을 행하시느니라”(10절)고 말합니다. 이것이 욥이 생각하는 욥의 하나님입니다. 이러한 욥의 하나님에 대해 친구들도 틀렸다고는 하지 않을 것입니다.
하지만 말씀드린 것처럼 욥은 하나님에 대해 여러 말로 설명하고 묘사할 수는 있을지언정 하나님과의 관계에서 자신에 대해서는 생각하지 못한다고 할 수 있습니다. 그 이유는 자신이 그토록 지혜롭고 힘이 강하시고 기이한 일을 행하시는 하나님이 자신에게 함께 하시고 모든 인생을 다스리신다는 것을 믿지 않기 때문입니다.
욥의 답답함은 고통의 이유를 알지 못한 것이라고 했습니다. 이것은 우리도 다르지 않습니다. 인생을 살아가면서 생각하지 않은 고통을 겪게 되면 그런 일을 겪게 되는 이유가 무엇인지, 그리고 고통을 주신 하나님의 뜻이 무엇인지를 알고 싶어 합니다. 그래서 ‘하나님 왜 이렇게 하십니까? 하나님의 뜻이 무엇입니까?’라고 기도하기도 합니다.
그러면 하나님이 그 이유와 목적에 대해서 말씀해 주신다면 모든 답답함이 해소되고 고통이 있지만 마음은 평안해질 수 있을까요? 자기 인생에 대한 하나님의 모든 계획과 뜻을 알게 된다면 인생의 모든 것을 하나님께 맡길 수 있겠다는 생각을 할 수도 있겠지만 그것은 우리의 착각일 뿐입니다. 왜냐하면 인간은 근본적으로 하나님의 뜻과 계획을 싫어하는 존재이고, 그 이유는 하나님의 뜻과 계획에 나의 소원은 포함되지 않는다는 것 때문입니다.
욥이 말하는 하나님이 우리가 생각하는 하나님이라면 분명한 것은 세상은 하나님에 의해 움직인다는 것이고 하나님께는 불의가 없다는 것입니다. 더군다나 우리는 하나님을 독생자 예수 그리스도의 피로 우리의 모든 죄를 용서하신 사랑의 하나님으로 고백합니다. 그러므로 하나님께는 오직 사랑과 긍휼과 자비하심만이 있을 뿐 모든 일에 불의가 없다는 것이 우리의 믿음입니다.
신자가 이 믿음으로 존재한다면 인생에서 겪는 모든 일에 대해서 그 이유를 알아야 할 필요가 있을까요? 굳이 ‘왜 이렇게 하십니까?’라는 물음을 하지 않아도 사랑이시고 신실하신 하나님이 행하시는 일이고 따라서 모든 이유가 하나님께 있다는 것으로 인생을 하나님께 맡길 수 있지 않을까요? 이것이 진심으로 하나님을 아는 것입니다.
욥의 문제도 이런 시각에서 이해하는 것이 필요합니다. 욥이 고통의 이유를 알고 싶어 했지만 사실 하나님에 대한 욥의 말이 믿음의 내용이었다면 자신의 고통의 이유 또한 지혜로우시고 힘이 강하시고 기이한 일을 행하시는 하나님께 있음을 믿는 것으로 되는 것입니다. 고통의 이유를 굳이 욥이 알아야 할 필요가 없기 때문입니다.
신자가 ‘하나님께 모든 것을 맡긴다’는 말을 합니다. 여러분이 알아야 하는 것은 ‘하나님께 모든 것을 맡긴다’는 것은 인생에서 겪게 되는 모든 일의 이유가 하나님께 있다는 것으로 자신의 인생에 대해서는 불안해하지 않는다는 뜻이 됩니다. 그래서 하나님이 내 인생을 인도하심을 믿는 것이 곧 평안인 것입니다.
Chapter 23
God of Job
Then Job answered and said,
I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?
Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.
Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.
Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.
Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number. (Job 9:1-10 KJV)

Job doesn't know why he has to go through the afflictions. Although we, as readers of the Book, know Satan provoked God of Job, he doesn't know that at all. Then, can we say that we have learned the answer of life through Job's situations?
We can know how his afflictions began because the Bible says so. Yet, we can't say knowing that made us learn the answer of life because we can't say all the afflictions we experience in life are caused by Satan, provoking God.
Even if all of our afflictions were caused by Satan and we knew it, we wouldn't know why God reacted to Satan. Then, we can't say we know the reason of the afflictions we experience in life. This is our life. We can't know why we have such things in life.
Thus, everyone has frustration and complaints in life. In addition, all have anxiety and worries, not knowing what is ahead in life. Some even may despair, feeling surrounded by walls which can't be overcome.
Job must be thinking his life has been totally destroyed because in Chapter 1, even though he wanted to live and was living, eschewing evil and revering God, all disappeared. What is left to him is full of complaints.
It would be impossible to imagine that Job could be in full of complaints as we think of Chapter 1 because his will and faith was not even to sin with his lips. In this sense, he must have despaired, looking at himself, complaining against God, whereas he didn't sin against God even with his lips although he didn't know why he had to experience such afflictions.
However, the Book of Job doesn't mention anything about why God accepted Satan's argument. Furthermore, Job doesn't ask God why he had to receive all the sufferings when he meets God in the later chapter.
Don't you think it's logical for him to ask God why he had to go through all these as soon as he meets God if he was frustrated not knowing the reason? Pondering that, it might be that the reason why he didn't ask that and even didn't want to know that is not because he came to know the reason but because he came to know he was held in God's hand and it was enough for him to know.
In today's passage, he talks about God. There is nothing wrong in his words. If it were an answer of a question, 'who is God?', it would be counted all correct because his words are not off what we know of God.
One thing we should be reminded of here is that even if one says the truth, one can't say one knows God because knowing God is not a matter of knowledge but the relationship with God. This is proven that Job is revealed as one who doesn't know God in the later chapters even though he said right things of God here.
In Verse 2, it says, "I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?" No one is righteous before God. All christians would agree with it. The question is, 'do you exist as one unrighteous before God?'
It doesn't mean we should say, 'I am a sinner, God' every day. 'Knowing one is unrighteous before God' includes whatever one does is unrighteous, including saying, 'I am a sinner.' Then, we come to know that having our own will for our life itself is even sinful.
Yet, Job feels frustrated of his own life though saying no one is righteous before God. He thinks he has no sin to receive such pain. He doesn't know he doesn't even deserve to ask God, 'why me, God?.'
After Verse 2, he still says the greatness of God: wisdom, strength and control of the universe. In Verses 3 and 4, it says, "If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand. He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?" He lifts up God to the Most High.
According to his words, we can understand the work of God is mysterious and perfect if no one can answer God one out of thousand even if one likes to argue with God. Yet, we find his words are nothing but lip service, knowing God is different from men.
From Verse 5 and on, he also says that God is ruling mountains, the sun, the sea, and the stars by mentioning Verse 10, "Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number." This is who he thinks God is. His friends wouldn't even say he is wrong of his words.
Yet, as I have told you earlier, even if he knows who God is in his knowledge, it is true that he doesn't know who he himself is in the relationship with God. It is because he doesn't believe that God, wise and strong, doing wonders, is reigning all human life including himself.
I have told you his frustration comes from unawareness of the reason of his afflictions. Ours is not different from his. When we have tough time in life, we would like to know why God allows such and what the will of God is for us. Thus, we often pray, 'why art Thou doing this to me?' or 'what is Thy will?'
If God told us His will and the reason, our frustration would be gone, but would we have peace in mind under the afflictions? We might think if we knew all the plans of God in our life, we would be sure to put all unto God, but it is a mere mirage because we detest the will and plan of God in nature. Our sinful nature always opposes to His will and plan.
If the God Job is talking about is the God we know, the world is controlled by God and there is no unrighteousness in God. Moreover, we even confess God is the love of God, not sparing His only Son, Jesus Christ, forgiving us for all of our sin. Therefore, it ought to be our faith that there is no unrighteousness in God but love, compassion and mercy.
If believers live in such faith, do they have to know the reasons of our afflictions? Don't you think they could put all things to God, knowing God has His purpose of what He is doing, love and sincere, without asking, "why, God?" This is the true faith.
We need to look at Job's case in this aspect. Although he wanted to know the reason of his afflictions, if what he said of God were true, it would be fine that he would be in his faith, believing the reason belongs to God, wise and strong, doing all the wonders because there should be absolutely no reason for him to know it at all.
Believers often confess, "I put all things to God." What we need to know when we say that is that we have no right to worry about the reasons of happenings in life, knowing God is perfectly fulfilling His work in His purpose. Therefore, we can proclaim, "it is the very peace that we believe God is leading our life"!
