12절의 “내가 그대에게 대답하리라 이 말에 그대가 의롭지 못하니 하나님은 사람보다 크심이니라”는 엘리후의 말을 보면 그가 하나님의 위대하심을 강조하고 높이고 있다는 것을 쉽게 알 수 있습니다. 하나님은 높으시고 위대하신 분이기 때문에 흙으로 지음 받은 인간은 감히 하나님과 논쟁할 수도 없다는 뜻의 말을 하는 것입니다.
욥기를 이해하기 어려운 점 중의 하나가 서로 논쟁하는 내용들에서 잘못된 것을 찾기가 힘들다는 것입니다. 들어보면 모두가 맞는 말입니다. 세 친구들이 하나님에 대해 주장했던 내용들도 특별히 잘못되었다고 할 부분이 없습니다. 그런 점에서 엘리후의 말은 세 친구보다 좀 더 수준 높은 내용이라는 점에서 과연 욥기에서의 엘리후의 위치나 그 역할을 어떻게 이해해야 하는지가 쉽지 않습니다.
엘리후의 말이 모두 맞다고 인정하는 것이 무리가 있지만 그렇다 해서 틀렸다고 할 수도 없습니다. 그래서 저는 엘리후가 하나님의 대변자로 등장하여 욥과 세 친구들의 하나님에 대한 잘못된 시각을 지적하는 것으로만 보지 않으려고 합니다. 엘리후는 좀 더 높고 확대된 생각으로 하나님에 대해 증언합니다. 그런데 그 가운데서 우리가 지나칠 수 있는 문제도 있음을 주지하고자 하는 것입니다.
그런 점에서 욥이 의롭지 못하고 하나님은 사람보다 크시다는 말에 대해 좀 더 심층적인 접근을 하고자 합니다. 하나님은 사람보다 크다는 말에 반대할 기독교인은 없습니다. 지극히 당연한 말이며 하나님을 높이는 고백이기도 합니다. 따라서 사실 하나님의 크심에 대한 설명은 불필요하다고 할 수 있습니다. 기독교인의 의식에 이미 굳건히 자리하고 있는 내용이기 때문입니다.
엘리후가 하나님이 크시다는 것을 말하는 것은 하나님에 대한 욥의 태도를 지적하기 위함입니다. 엘리후는 욥과 세 친구의 논쟁의 현장에서 욥이 하나님과 논쟁하는 것처럼 보이는 원망과 항의를 들었다고 말합니다.
9-11절의 “이르기를 나는 깨끗하여 악인이 아니며 순전하고 불의도 없거늘 참으로 하나님이 나에게서 잘못을 찾으시며 나를 자기의 원수로 여기사 내 발을 차꼬에 채우시고 나의 모든 길을 감시하신다 하였느니라”는 것이 사람보다 크신 하나님에 대해 의롭지 못한 모습을 보인 것으로 판단한 것입니다.
욥의 말은 우리의 신앙 정서로도 용납할 수 없는 내용입니다. 따라서 욥을 향한 엘리후의 지적은 지극히 당연하다고 생각할 수 있습니다. 그러면 만약 욥이 ‘나보다 크신 하나님 앞에서 내가 불의한 말을 했다. 잘못했다’라고 인정하고 했던 말을 취소하면 문제가 해결되는 것일까요? 엘리후는 욥의 그러한 자기반성을 기대했을 수도 있습니다. 하지만 중요한 것은 그것을 과연 하나님을 아는 신앙이라고 할 수 있는가 하는 것입니다.
우리는 직접 하나님을 만나지 않습니다. 하나님을 볼 수도 없습니다. 빌립이 예수님께 아버지를 보여 달라고 했지만 예수님은 “빌립아 내가 이렇게 오래 너희와 함께 있으되 네가 나를 알지 못하느냐 나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았거늘 어찌하여 아버지를 보이라 하느냐”(요 14:9)라고 말씀하십니다.
우리는 예수님에게서 아버지이신 하나님을 보게 됩니다. 그래서 신자는 비록 홍해가 갈라지고 해가 멈추는 등의 놀라운 사건이 없어도 예수님에게서 하나님의 크심을 경험하는 것입니다. 이것은 단지 관념적으로 ‘하나님은 크시다’라고 고백하는 것과 본질적으로 다릅니다. 우리의 의식에 막연하게 박혀 있는 ‘하나님은 크시다’는 것보다 복음을 알아가면서 알게 되는 하나님의 크심은 분명 다른 것입니다.
엘리후가 하나님은 사람보다 크신 분인데 어떻게 감히 하나님과 논쟁할 수 있는가?라고 화를 냅니다. 하지만 이것은 하나님을 높이는 신앙에 의한 것이라기보다는 연장자를 자기보다 높은 자로 대우하는 인격적 성품에 더 가깝다고 할 수 있습니다.
엘리후가 세 친구와의 논쟁이 끝날 때까지 아무 말 없이 참고 있었던 것은 욥과 세 친구가 자신보다 연장자였기 때문입니다. 우리도 어른들이 말할 때 어린 사람은 끼어들지 않는 것이 예의라고 배워왔고 또 그렇게 가르칩니다. 이것을 보면 엘리후는 연장자에 대한 예의가 있는 사람이라고 할 수 있습니다.
이것을 생각하면 크신 하나님과 논쟁하는 것 자체를 흙으로 지음 받은 인간으로서 하나님을 공경하지 않는 불손한 태도로 여기는 것이 당연할 것입니다. 이런 점에서 보면 ‘하나님은 사람보다 크다’는 엘리후의 말은 하나님에 대한 맞는 표현이지만 크신 하나님에 대한 인식과 크신 하나님과의 관계에 대해서는 오해가 있다고 할 수 있습니다.
우리에게는 항상 이런 문제가 있습니다. 말은 옳은데 그 말의 세계에 대해서는 알지 못하는 것입니다. 그래서 옳은 말을 하면서도 정작 그 말에 내포된 신앙 세계에 대해서는 경험하지 못하는 안타까운 현실이 반복되는 것입니다. 우리는 엘리후의 말에서 그러한 우리의 현실을 생각할 수 있어야 합니다.
엘리후는 사람이 하나님 앞에서 의롭지 않다는 것을 분명히 인식하고 있습니다. 비록 욥이 자신은 불의함이 없는 주장을 하긴 했지만 욥 역시 하나님 앞에서 불의한 존재라는 것은 인식하고 있습니다.
또한 엘리후는 4절에서 “하나님의 영이 나를 지으셨고 전능자의 기운이 나를 살리시느니라”고 말합니다. 이 말은 자신이 존재하고 살아가는 모든 것이 하나님에 의한 것이라는 고백과 같습니다.
그리고 6,7절에서는 “나와 그대가 하나님 앞에서 동일하니 나도 흙으로 지으심을 입었은즉 내 위엄으로는 그대를 두렵게 하지 못하고 내 손으로는 그대를 누르지 못하느니라”고 말합니다. 엘리후 자신도 욥과 같이 흙으로 지음 받은 존재일 뿐이기에 욥의 고집을 꺾고 굴복하게 할 힘이 없다는 뜻입니다.
엘리후의 이 말을 연결해 보면 어떤 결론에 도달할 수 있습니까? 인간을 굴복하게 할 힘은 자기 자신이나 타인이 아니라 하나님께만 있다는 것입니다. 엘리후는 그런 의도로 말한 것이 아니겠지만 엘리후의 말에는 그 의미가 담겨 있는 것입니다. 결국 옳은 말을 하면서도 그 말의 참된 의미에 대해서는 알지 못한 인간의 어리석음을 생각하게 하는 것인데, 그것이 지금 우리의 현실임을 잊지 않아야 합니다.
우리는 예수님에게서 하나님을 본다고 했습니다. 십자가에 피 흘려 죽으신 예수님에게서 보게 되는 하나님은 누구실까요? 죄에 대해서는 양보하지 않으시고 심판하시는 하나님입니다. 그런데 그 심판을 아들에게 대신 담당하게 하시고 정작 심판 받아야 할 우리는 거룩한 성도로 삼으신 자비하신 하나님을 보게 됩니다.
그래서 우리가 예수님의 십자가에서 하나님을 만난다면 하나님께 나올 수 없는 죄의 존재임을 고백하게 되면서 크신 긍휼과 자비하심에 감사하게 될 것입니다. 이것이 신자가 십자가에서 경험하게 되는 크신 하나님입니다. 자기의 의를 고집하는 인간을 굴복하게 하시고, 자신의 의가 아닌 예수님의 의를 높이게 하시며, 살아가는 모든 것이 하나님의 자비하심에 의한 것임을 고백하게 하시는 것으로 하나님의 위대하심과 크심을 경험하는 것입니다.
이런 점에서 엘리후는 비록 하나님이 사람보다 크시다는 지극히 당연한 말을 했지만 정작 본인은 하나님의 크심에 대해 경험하지 못했다고 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 우리는 엘리후에게서 오늘 우리의 솔직한 현실을 목격할 수 있어야 합니다. 창조주 하나님, 크신 하나님, 사랑의 하나님, 전지전능한 하나님 등등 수많은 말로 하나님을 공경하고 높이는 것 같지만 실제로는 하나님이 누구신가를 알지 못하고 경험하지 못한 어리석고 무지한 존재가 바로 나 자신인 것을 절감해야 하는 것입니다.
복음을 말한다면 복음을 말하는 자신에게 초점을 둘 것이 아니라 ‘내가 복음의 세계 안에 있는가’를 성찰해야 합니다. 십자가를 말하면서 ‘십자가를 말하는 내가 옳다’는 생각은 추호도 하지 말고 ‘내가 과연 예수님이 가신 십자가의 길로 가기를 소원하는가?’를 생각해야 합니다.
그 끝은 ‘나는 복음 안에서 십자가만 소원 한다’가 아니라 ‘복음을 말하면서도 복음과 다른 길로 가는 나를 주께서 붙들어 가신다’로 나와져야 합니다. 그것이 하나님의 다스림으로 살아가는 증거인 것이고 크신 하나님을 경험하는 것입니다. 관념에 붙들려 실상을 보지 못할 수 있습니다. 관념의 종교 세계가 깨어지고 감추어져 있던 자신의 실상이 튀어나왔을 때, 그로 인해 자신의 악함을 절감하는 그 순간이 하나님의 크심을 경험하는 것입니다.
Chapter 72
God Is Greater Than Man
Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,
I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.
Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,
He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.
Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man. (Job 33:8-12 KJV)

Taking a look at Verse 12, “Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man”, we can easily notice that Elihu is emphasizing on the greatness of God, meaning that since God is high and great, man, created from dust, can’t argue with God.
What makes us have a difficulty reading the Book of Job is that we can hardly find any fault in their dispute. All sounds fine. There is not particularly wrong in what Job’s three friends said to Job regarding God. In this sense, since Elihu says something even more eloquent than the three friends, it is not easy for us to understand his role and position in the Book of Job.
It is a little too much to accept all Elihu says is right, but it is also hard to say there is something wrong in his words. Thus, I am not going to view his words only as a mediator of God, pointing out the problems of their viewpoint of God, including Job and his three friends. Elihu testifies of God in a more elegant and extended way, but I would like to think of what we might overlook in his words.
In this aspect, we need to take a look at his words, ‘God is greater than man’, in depth. There would be no one who would oppose to it as a christian. It is absolutely true that all christians would praise God by saying that. Thus, it is not necessary to explain the expression, which is deeply rooted into mind.
Why Elihu says this is that he wants to point out Job’s attitude toward God. He says that he heard their dispute as a complaint against God.
He judges Job that he isn’t righteous, saying in Verses 9 to 11, “I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy, He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.”
We can’t accept Job’s words even in our common sense either. Hence, Elihu seems reasonable to us. If so, would it be fine if Job accepted his fault by saying such and repented? Elihu might expect Job to do so, but the thing is if that is what God wants Job to do.
We haven’t met God face to face. We can’t see God either. When Philip asked the Lord to show him God, Jesus answered him in John 14:9, “Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?”
We can see God the Father through Jesus Christ. Thus, believers experience the greatness of God in Him even if they didn’t have such miracles as crossing the Red Sea or witnessing the sun staying a day in Joshua’s time. It is different from merely saying, ‘God is great’ in idealism. The knowledge of ‘the greatness of God’ by the gospel is not just saying it.
Elihu is angered since Job argued with God, who is greater than man. Yet, we should notice his attitude isn’t from the faith but his ethical manner, respecting the elderly.
He kept quiet during their dispute because they were older than he. We are also educated that we are to be silent when the elderly talk. In this sense, he is a respectful person.
Thus, in this view, we can learn that he must have considered Job rude, complaining against God. In this sense, his words, ‘God is greater than man’, is right but it could be true that he misunderstands the meaning of greatness of God and the relationship with God.
We tend to have such problems that Elihu has. Our words may be right but we are ignorant of what we say, resulting in the fact that we aren’t experiencing the world of what we say. We ought to see ourselves in such reality in Elihu’s words.
Elihu surely cognizes men are unrighteous before God. Job also senses that even though he claimed his innocence.
Elihu also says in Verse 4, “The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life”, meaning all his existence is of God.
He further says in Verses 6 and 7, “Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay. Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee”, meaning that since he is of dust like Job, he has no power to overcome his stubbornness at all.
What conclusion can we arrive at if we put all of his words in a sentence? The power that makes Job surrender is not on himself but God. Even if he didn’t mean exactly like so, his words has such meaning. He says something right, but he doesn’t realize what he says, which, we should know, is our reality.
I’ve told you we see God through Jesus. Who is God, whom we see through Jesus, shedding His blood on the cross? He is God, judging sin without compromise. Yet, we see God in His mercy, sparing not His Own Son, but us, who don’t deserve to be called holy.
Therefore, when we meet God at the cross of Christ, we come to confess that we can’t come to God on our own, giving thanks to God for His mercy and compassion. This is what we can experience of the greatness of God. He is the One, making sinners surrender of their stubbornness and lift up the righteousness of Christ, living in the experience of His love.
In this view, although Elihu says God is greater than man in his knowledge, we can find that he isn’t experiencing God’s greatness. And, we ought to be aware that he is used to show our reality. Even though we say many things about God such as greatness of God, love of God, omniscient God and so on, we have to admit that we aren’t experiencing Him in our ignorance.
If we preach the gospel, we mustn’t focus on ourselves, preaching the gospel, but look back while asking ourselves, ‘am I in the world of the gospel?’ While talking about the cross, we mustn’t think we are right because we preach the gospel, but keep in mind that we are to desire to walk on the path of the cross, where Christ walked.
Meanwhile, we must conclude, ‘it is the Lord, holding us who would walk off the road of the gospel while preaching the gospel’, not ‘I only desire to know the cross in the gospel.’ This is the evidence that we are living in His government and this is the experience of the greatness of God. We might not be able to see our reality because we are strongly embedded in the idealism of religion of Christianity. When we get out of the idealism, being broken and see the reality of our sinful nature, we come to realize how evil we are. This is the time when we experience the greatness of God surely!
