<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 12

The Gift of God

I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.

And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.

I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.

That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past. (Ecclesiastes 3:12-15 KJV)

(Sermon)

Apostles had no their own world because they knew all things are made by God for Himself. This is the reality they came to understand before Christ on the cross. Yet, those who have no knowledge of Christ can’t understand the world, only for God. It is because they are strongly caught by a thought that they have no reason to be for God while asking, ‘what has God given me?’ This is our foolishness, not knowing sin.

God sent His Son to die on the cross for sin, but men, ignorant of the sacrifice of His death, are engrossed with their own happiness, getting rid of all things impeding it, including the affliction of the cross. We would shun the affliction as thinking it causes us to suffer.

To such, the Preacher speaks in Verses 12 and 13, “I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.”

He may ostensibly sound like, ‘it is the gift of God that we rejoice and have happiness in life.’ That is, God gives us happiness. Then, what we need to think first is ‘have I received happiness from God?’ What about you? Have you received happiness from God? If so, you should be able to claim you are happy now. Yet, you may not willingly say yes. If our enjoying happiness is the gift of God, we should always be happy no matter what circumstances we are in, but our reality doesn’t allow us to say so.

However, the gift of God has no meaning of our joy or happiness at all. Such is our mere misunderstanding, thinking of only ourselves. We even think the heaven is a place where we can enjoy for our flesh. Nevertheless, the modern Christianity talks about faith as a way of receiving joy and happiness, which is nothing but revealing the reality of being caught by sin.

People in the world think if they feel good and rejoice, they are happy and if not, they are unhappy, but it is just a self-centered mind. Why such thoughts are wrong is because God exists for Himself as God-centered. Thus, we should notice that He lets us live for Him, not for ourselves.

In Verse 14, it says, “I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.”

Look at for whom whatever God does is. It is for God, feared by men. ‘To make men fear God’ is the reason and purpose of all He does. In such works of God, there is nothing for men. That’s why there is nothing added or subtracted. No one can change the work of God as one wishes.

Then, for whom is the gift of God? In the Epistle to the Ephesians 2:7-8, it says, “That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.”

If we got saved through faith given by God as gift, it could be said that the gift of God is for us. Yet, if faith were the gift of God, it should have been given to all men, meaning there would be no differentiation. If faith were good for men, it should be all men to be saved, since it is good for men. Such thought is man-centered of God.

Apostle Paul says that we are saved through faith to present the exceeding grace to the ages to come. In other words, the salvation is not for men but to proclaim the grace of God for God Himself.

Paul says even in Ephesians 3:8, “Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ.”

He knows God gave him His grace to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ to gentiles, not for himself. He noticed that God called him, the least of all saints, persecuting Christ, to show him the riches of Christ. As all things are made for the glory of God, it is no wonder for Paul to know that there is no world of his own.

Saying ‘to rejoice is the gift of God’ might easily be understood as the blessing that we receive after our devoted life with faith. Yet, if so, it is not the gift but compensation for the reward of the hard work of life. If the gift is deemed the compensation, it will be followed by boasting. As last, it ends up lifting ourselves, not God.

Yet, ‘fearing God’ is to give thanks to God for His compassion in the knowledge that we don’t deserve to rejoice with eating, drinking and laboring. It is not to ask, ‘am I happy or not?’, but to look up to the mercy of God in any given situations.

We can neither ask nor choose gift of God. We can’t even protest against God by saying, ‘Why is this given to me?’ because we deserve nothing to be given anyway for sure no matter what is given. Thus, believers are to praise and give thanks to God for His compassion in the given life, which is to fear God, the gift for God Himself.

The gift of God is of God Himself, no doubt. Then, if our joy of eating, drinking and laboring is the gift of God, there is nothing we can take for granted in our life. There would be nothing we can eat or drink, deemed trivial, unless God gave us the gift. In other words, eating and drinking are not of us.

Thus, if one has no knowledge of the meaning of the gift of God, one will persist in saying one got nothing, although one received much. It is obvious that one fears no God. On the contrary, if one knows the meaning of the gift of God, and knows eating and drinking is of God, one will surely have one’s life not for oneself. Furthermore, one will confess all are given and done by the gift of the infinite grace of God. It is the purpose of the gift of God.

Therefore, believers come to realize that they have not lived on their own. No matter how long they have lived, they would rather find that God is the One who lets them live since they don’t deserve to live. Such mind characterizes believers who have received the gift of God and come to know the reason and meaning of it.

People in the world would rather receive things from their efforts and labor, but all these are also the gift of God. Moreover, they can’t get all that they labored for. It is commonly witnessed that labor goes many a time in vain in the world. Thus, the longer we live, the more we realize all things are of the gift of God, knowing there is none we can do.

Enter deeply into the world of the gift, which God has given us. The world, which is not what we want but of God, is light and has no burden in His compassion. In the thanksgiving for daily eating and drinking, such life is nothing but rejoicing in the gift of God!
