19.또한 어떤 사람에게든지 하나님이 재물과 부요를 그에게 주사 능히 누리게 하시며 제 몫을 받아 수고함으로 즐거워하게 하신 것은 하나님의 선물이라
20.그는 자기의 생명의 날을 깊이 생각하지 아니하리니 이는 하나님이 그의 마음에 기뻐하는 것으로 응답하심이니라
<설교>
인생에 대해서 부인할 수 없는 분명한 사실 하나는 인간이 관여할 수 없다는 것입니다. 따라서 자기 인생을 원하는 방향으로 끌어가기 위해 시도하는 모든 노력은 헛수고로 결론 나게 됩니다. 이처럼 인간이 관여할 수 없는 것이 인생이라면 인생에서 주어진 것들은 인간됨을 근거로 한 결과물이 아닌 것이 됩니다. 착하게 살아서 즐거움이 있다거나 죄를 지어서 고통이 있다는 식으로 인생을 해석할 수 없다는 뜻입니다.
18절에 보면 “사람이 하나님께서 그에게 주신 바 그 일평생에 먹고 마시며 해 아래에서 하는 모든 수고 중에서 낙을 보는 것이 선하고 아름다움을 내가 보았나니 그것이 그의 몫이로다”라고 말합니다.
사람은 하나님께서 주신 것으로 살고 있습니다. 우리에게 있는 모든 것이 하나님이 주신 몫입니다. 따라서 사람은 각기 하나님이 있게 하신 자리에서 하나님이 주신 것으로 살고 있는 것입니다. 이것이 의미하는 바가 무엇일까요? 하나님이 주신 바를 따라 일평생 먹고 마시고 수고하며 사는 것이 우리의 현실이라면 가장 잘 산다고 할 수 있는 것은 무엇일까요? 그것은 모든 것이 하나님의 소관이며 하나님이 하시는 일임을 알고 하나님이 주신 몫으로 즐겁게 살면 되는 것입니다.
그런데 우리는 인생을 나의 것으로 생각하고 내가 관여하고 싶어 합니다. 하나님이 주신 몫으로만 사는 것보다 원하는 것을 더 받아서 더 즐겁고 행복한 인생을 살고자 합니다. 하지만 그것이 자신을 걱정과 염려와 한숨으로부터 벗어나지 못하게 한다는 것을 알지 못합니다. 인생에 대한 염려 걱정이 쓸데없는 것임을 생각지 않는 것입니다. 그렇게 보면 하나님이 주신 몫에 감사하지 못하고 더 많은 것을 요구하고 집착하는 우리가 참으로 강력한 욕심에 이끌러 가고 있다고 할 수 있습니다.
이것이 하나님이 주신 세상에서 하나님이 주신 몫으로 살아가는 우리의 실상임을 생각해 보십시오. 과연 지금 주어진 몫이 진심으로 부족하다고 할 수 있겠습니까? 인간은 저마다 주어진 것에 불평하면서 받은 것이 적어서 행복하지 않다고 생각합니다. 행복하지 않은 이유를 주어진 몫의 결핍에서 찾는 것입니다.
돈이 없어서 행복하지 않고 몸이 건강하지 않아서 행복하지 않다고 합니다. 마치 결핍으로 여기는 것들이 채워지면 당장 행복해질 수 있다고 자신하는 것입니다. 하지만 부와 건강이 행복의 조건이라면 그 모든 것이 갖춰진 사람들은 행복해야 합니다. 그러나 현실은 전혀 그렇지 않다는 것 또한 부인할 수 없는 사실입니다. 그런데도 불구하고 보이는 것에 행복의 조건을 두는 것이 인간의 어리석음입니다.
19절을 보면 “또한 어떤 사람에게든지 하나님이 재물과 부요를 그에게 주사 능히 누리게 하시며 제 몫을 받아 수고함으로 즐거워하게 하신 것은 하나님의 선물이라”고 말합니다.
하나님의 선물은 당연히 하나님으로부터 오는 것을 말합니다. 18절에서 말한 그의 몫이라는 것도 하나님으로 주어진 것입니다. 이처럼 모든 것이 하나님으로부터 온 것이라면 선물을 받은 인간은 저주 받기로 작정된 현실에서 주어진 모든 것을 볼 수 있어야 합니다. 그럴 때 선물을 선물로 대할 수 있습니다. 선물을 선물로 대하는 것은 타인의 것과 차이를 느끼지 않는 것입니다. 선물을 받을 자격이 없는 자에게 주어진 은혜가 크기 때문에 타인의 것과 비교하며 자신의 선물의 가치와 감사함을 잃어버리는 어리석음으로 가지 않는 것입니다.
15-17절에 보면 “그가 모태에서 벌거벗고 나왔은즉 그가 나온 대로 돌아가고 수고하여 얻은 것을 아무것도 자기 손에 가지고 가지 못하리니 이것도 큰 불행이라 어떻게 왔든지 그대로 가리니 바람을 잡는 수고가 그에게 무엇이 유익하랴 일평생을 어두운 데에서 먹으며 많은 근심과 질병과 분노가 그에게 있느니라”고 말합니다.
인간의 일평생을 근심과 질병과 분노로 말합니다. 수고한 모든 것이 원하는 것을 잡을 수 있는 것이 아니라 바람을 잡는 것과 같기 때문입니다. 인간의 일평생이 근심과 질병과 분노로 덮이는 것이 마땅하다면 지금의 현재는 어떻게 해석해야 하겠습니까? 한마디로 말해서 받을 수 없는 것을 받은 것입니다. 이것이 하나님의 선물입니다.
결국 즐거움과 행복은 많은 것을 받아 누리는 조건적인 것이 아니라 하나님을 알고 인간을 아는 것에 있습니다. 지금의 모든 것들 하나하나가 내가 누릴 수 없는 것들이며 다만 하나님의 선물로 베풀어진 것임을 아는 것이 인생을 바르게 보는 것입니다.
딤전 6:8절에서 먹을 것과 입을 것이 있은즉 족한 줄로 알라고 말하지만 누구도 먹을 것 입을 것으로 족하다고 할 사람이 없다고 말씀드렸습니다. 지금처럼 모든 것이 풍족한 세상에서 단지 먹고 입는 것으로 만족할 사람은 없는 것입니다.
그래서 인간이 어떤 존재로 세상에 오는가를 잊지 않아야 하는 것입니다. 모태로부터 벌거벗은 부끄러운 자로 나오는 것이 인간입니다. 돌아갈 때도 세상에서 수고하여 얻은 것을 아무것도 가져가지 못하고 부끄러운 자들의 세계로 돌아갑니다. 이것이 인생의 실체라면 사실 세상에서 소유하고 부요를 누리는 것은 의미 없습니다. 다만 누구든 하나님이 주신 선물로 감사하고 즐거워한다면 그것이 가장 잘 사는 것입니다.
여러분의 현재를 모태에서 벌거벗고 나왔고, 일평생 마땅한 것이 근심과 질병과 분노라고 생각해 보십시오. 그럼에도 현재에 대해 결핍을 느끼고 채우기 위한 수고에 힘쓴다면 그것은 다만 한없는 욕심일 뿐입니다. 결국 아무 것도 가지고 가지 못할 헛된 수고에 힘쓰고 있는 것이 우리의 현실임을 알아야 하는 것입니다. 그래서 저주가 당연하다는 시각에서 인생을 바라보면 부족함을 느끼는 것 자체가 악이라는 것을 알게 되는 것입니다.
인생에 대해서는 인간이 관여할 수 없다고 말씀드렸습니다. 인간이 관여할 수 없기 때문에 인생에 대한 자기 계획 자체가 신기루와 같은 것입니다. 물론 인생에 대한 계획을 세울 수는 있습니다. 하지만 경험하게 되는 것은 계획대로 되지 않는 현실입니다. 그럴 때 인생이 실패했다고 생각할 것이 아니라 인생을 나의 계획대로 끌고 가고자 했던 것이 교만임을 배워야 하는 것입니다.
인생은 하나님이 우리의 몫으로 챙겨주신 것을 받아서 사는 것입니다. 하나님이 주신 몫의 분량과 상관없이 얼마든지 즐거워할 수 있습니다. 다만 그것은 하나님의 선물을 선물로 받았을 때 가능할 뿐입니다.
무엇보다 하나님의 선물을 우리의 만족을 위한 것으로 생각하지 않아야 합니다. 언제나 욕망이 꿈틀거리는 우리를 만족시키기 위한 선물이 아니라 자격 없는 자에게 주어졌다는 사실만으로 선물로서의 가치는 충분한 것입니다. 이처럼 인생은 하나님의 선물을 받기 위해서가 아니라 받은 자로 사는 것이기 때문에 누구에게든 인생 그 자체가 그의 몫으로 주어진 것으로 볼 수 있어야 하는 것입니다.
사람마다 인생이 각기 다릅니다. 말 그대로 하나님은 어떤 사람에게든지 부요와 재물을 주십니다. 하나님이 택한 백성에게만 부요와 재물을 주신다는 원칙은 없습니다. 기준은 하나님이 주고자 하시는 대로입니다. 하지만 중요한 것은 부요와 재물이 인생의 가치를 결정하는 조건은 아니라는 것입니다. 해 아래에서 먹고 마시고 낙을 누리고 사는 것이 인생의 가치를 결정하는 기준도 조건도 되지 못합니다. 인생의 가치는 오직 그리스도로 결정되기 때문입니다.
20절을 보면 “그는 자기의 생명의 날을 깊이 생각하지 아니하리니 이는 하나님이 그의 마음에 기뻐하는 것으로 응답하심이니라”고 말합니다.
신자는 세상에서 살고 죽는 일, 먹고 마시는 일로 깊이 생각하고 고민할 필요가 없습니다. 인생의 모든 것은 하나님이 주신 몫대로 사는 것이기 때문입니다. 우리가 인생의 가치를 그리스도께 둔다면 우리의 마음에 기쁨이 되는 것은 당연히 그리스도입니다. 그렇게 하나님은 인생의 가치가 그리스도께 있음을 알게 하시고 그리스도로 우리 마음을 채우시는 것입니다.
우리가 그리스도를 믿는다면 인생은 이미 그리스도로 그 가치가 확정되어 있습니다. 그리스도의 십자가의 은혜로 생명을 얻었다는 것보다 존귀하고 가치 있는 것은 없습니다. 그래서 신자는 세상에서 인생의 가치를 찾는 사람과 다르게 이미 부족함이 없는 인생을 사는 것입니다. 이 믿음으로 모든 것을 하나님이 주신 몫으로 받고 감사하며 즐거움이 있는 인생이 되기 바랍니다.
Chapter 23
The Gift Of God
Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.
Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.
For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart. (Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 KJV)

One thing for sure of life is that we are not in control. Thus, all the intentions we do to drive our life for what we wish end up in vain. So, if we can’t control our life, whatever is given to us is not based on what we are or do, meaning we can’t interpret our life that doing good deeds bring us happiness or sinning causes us to have pain.
In Verse 18, it says, “Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.”
We live with what is given by God. All we have is the portion God has given us. Thus, we live where God put us. What does that mean? If it is our reality, what is it that we can say we have the best life? It is to live happily with the portion given by God, knowing all is in God’s hand.
Yet, we think our life belongs to us and would like to take a full control. We would want to enjoy more than what we are given by God. Yet, we don’t know such mind makes us entangled with incessant worries and sighs. We don’t think it is useless for life. In this sense, it is not wrong to say that we are living without thanksgiving, caught by the strong obsession with more than our portion.
Look at the reality that we are in, living in the God-given world with our portion. Can we say that it is is insufficient? We all complain, saying we are unhappy because we aren’t given enough. We would find our unhappiness at the lack of our portion.
We often claim we have lack of money and health, presuming we would be happy otherwise. Yet, if so, those with such condition, they would be fine. However, we must admit that the reality swings the other way. Despite that, it is our foolishness that we pursue the visible things for our happiness.
In Verse19, it says, “Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.”
The gift of God is no doubt of God. The portion in Verse 18 is of God as well. Likewise, if all is of God, we need to see all given by God at the reality that we are condemned for sin. Only then, can we receive the gift of God as gift, meaning we see no difference between our portion and that of others. We are aware in thanksgiving that we have been given the gift we don’t deserve.
In Verse15-17, it says, “As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand. And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind? All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness.”
All our days are summarized with sorrow and wrath with sickness. It is because all of our labor leads us to nothing. If so, how should we interpret our current situations? That is, we are given what we can’t be given. This is the gift of God.
After all, joy and happiness are not in conditions of receiving abundance, but the knowledge of God and our sinful nature. It is the spiritual point of view of life that we don’t deserve what we are enjoying moment by moment.
Although 1st Timothy 6:8 says to us to be satisfied with what we have, I’ve already told you there is no one like that in such world of abundance like today.
That’s why we mustn’t forget what we are in birth, born naked. When we leave the world, we take nothing with us, returning to the shame. If it is our ultimate beings, it is meaningless of having riches in the world. Only being thankful for the gift of God is the utmost life.
Think that your life began with being naked and what we deserve in all your days is worries and wrath with sickness. Nevertheless, if you try to fill in what you think lacks, it is nothing more than greed. We should be aware that we labor for things we can’t take when we leave the world. Thus, if we take a look at our life at where we deserve the condemnation of God, we will find our feeling of insufficiency is our wickedness.
I have already mentioned that we are not in control of our life. Thus, planning our life is like mirage. Of course, we can plan our life, but we also experience it can’t go as it is planned. Then, we shouldn’t think our life has failed but we need to learn it is our sin, pride, that we would be in control of our life.
We live with the portion we have in God. We can be satisfied no matter how much we are given. Yet, it is only possible when we receive the gift of God as gift.
Above all, we must remember the gift of God isn’t for our satisfaction. It is given to us who deserve nothing. As such, since life is not to receive things we want but to live as given, we live as we are in our portion.
No one is the same in life. As uttered, God gives some riches and wealth. There is no such principle that riches and possessions are for God’s elect. It is all up to God. Yet, the thing is that those riches and wealth are not to determine the value of our life, meaning eating and drinking under the sun can’t prove the value of our life. It is because Christ is the only One that puts our life in value.
In Verse 20, it says, “For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.”
Believers have no reason to worry about life and death, or eating and drinking in the world because we live in the portion God has given us. If we put the value of our life in Christ, our joy will be only Christ and nothing else. God lets us learn such and fills our heart with Him.
If we say we believe in Christ, He has been fixed in the value of our life. There is no more valuable than receiving the eternal life through the grace of the cross. That’s why believers are living in the world with no lacking unlike those seeking for their own values of life. I sincerely pray that by faith you live in joy and thanksgiving with the portion God has given you!
