14.세상에서 행해지는 헛된 일이 있나니 곧 악인들의 행위에 따라 벌을 받는 의인들도 있고 의인들의 행위에 따라 상을 받는 악인들도 있다는 것이라 내가 이르노니 이것도 헛되도다
15.이에 내가 희락을 찬양하노니 이는 사람이 먹고 마시고 즐거워하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 해 아래에는 없음이라 하나님이 사람을 해 아래에서 살게 하신 날 동안 수고하는 일 중에 그러한 일이 그와 함께 있을 것이니라
16.내가 마음을 다하여 지혜를 알고자 하며 세상에서 행해지는 일을 보았는데 밤낮으로 자지 못하는 자도 있도다
17.또 내가 하나님의 모든 행사를 살펴 보니 해 아래에서 행해지는 일을 사람이 능히 알아낼 수 없도다 사람이 아무리 애써 알아보려고 할지라도 능히 알지 못하나니 비록 지혜자가 아노라 할지라도 능히 알아내지 못하리로다

하나님을 알지 못한 인간은‘인과응보’라는 행위의 법칙으로 흘러가게 됩니다. 선과 악을 행위를 기준으로 구분하고 선한 자에게는 복, 악한 자에게는 벌이 주어진다는 것이 가장 공평하기 때문입니다. 하지만 우리가 매일 목격하는 세상의 현실은 인과응보의 법칙에 의해 흘러가지 않습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 교회가 복과 화를 인과응보의 법칙을 따라 말하는 것은 교회 스스로 하나님을 모른다는 것을 자인하는 것과 같습니다.
14절을 보면 “세상에서 행해지는 헛된 일이 있나니 곧 악인들의 행위에 따라 벌을 받는 의인들도 있고 의인들의 행위에 따라 상을 받는 악인들도 있다는 것이라 내가 이르노니 이것도 헛되도다”라고 말합니다.
악인의 행위에 따라 의인이 벌을 받는다면 누구든 부당하다 할 것입니다. 의인의 행위에 따라 악인이 상을 받는 것 또한 부조리하다 할 것입니다. 이처럼 하나님은 도무지 우리가 납득할 수 없는 방법으로 세상을 다스립니다. 과연 우리의 본성과 충돌되는 방법으로 다스리시는 것으로 우리에게 알려주고자 하시는 것이 무엇일까요?
악인의 행위에 따라 의인이 벌을 받는다면 의인의 입장에서는 억울할 수 있습니다. 이유 없이 벌을 받는 것이기 때문입니다. 하지만 우리가 착각하는 것이 있습니다. 그것은 의인을 벌이 아니라 복을 받아야 하는 사람으로 간주하는 것입니다.
과연 그럴까요? 성경에서 의인으로 인정되는 사람이 누구인가를 생각해 보십시오. 죄가 없는 사람이 아니라 죄를 깨닫고 십자가에서 흘리신 그리스도의 용서의 은혜로 감사하는 사람을 의인이라고 합니다. 때문에 악인의 행위에 따라 의인이 벌 받는 것을 부당하고 부조리한 것으로 여긴다면 의인 또한 행위에 기준을 두고 판단하기 때문이라고 할 수 있습니다.
악인과 의인은 행위가 다르지 않습니다. 인간의 행위는 모두가 동일합니다. 자기중심으로 자기를 위해 살아가는 것이 인간의 악함이라고 했을 때 과연 ‘나는 너와 다르다’고 할 사람이 누가 있을까요? 그렇기 때문에 악인의 행위에 따라 벌을 받는 의인이 있다 해도 결국은 의인도 자기 행위에 따라 벌 받는 것일 뿐입니다. 다만 다른 것은 자신에게 주어진 고통의 현실을 부당한 것이 아닌 당연한 것으로 바라본다는 것입니다.
계 20:12절에“또 내가 보니 죽은 자들이 큰 자나 작은 자나 그 보좌 앞에 서 있는데 책들이 펴 있고 또 다른 책이 펴졌으니 곧 생명책이라 죽은 자들이 자기 행위를 따라 책들에 기록된 대로 심판을 받으니”라고 말합니다.
하나님의 보좌에 두 권의 책이 있습니다. 하나는 생명책이고 또 다른 하나는 행위가 기록된 행위책입니다. 그리고 죽은 자들이 보좌 앞에 서서 행위를 따라 책들에 기록된 대로 심판을 받는다고 합니다. 이것을 두고 사람들은 행위책에는 인간의 악한 행위들이 기록되어 있을 것으로 상상합니다. 그리고 책에 기록된 악한 행위가 있는 자들은 심판을 받기 때문에 착하게 살아야 하는 것으로 알고 있습니다.
그러면 생명책에는 우리가 선하다고 생각하는 행위가 기록되어 있을까요? 그렇게 되면 생명에 기록된 사람들은 자신의 선한 행위에 의해 구원을 받는 것이 됩니다. 이것이 십자가 은혜를 멸시하는 것이 됩니다. 생명책에는 인간의 행위가 아니라 예수님의 의의 행함만 있습니다.
그러면 우리가 선하다고 여기는 행함은 어디에 기록되어 있을까요? 당연히 행위책입니다. 그래서 행위책에는 선행으로 칭찬하는 모든 행위까지 포함되어 있는 것입니다. 구제, 헌신, 봉사, 선교, 등등 신앙적인 행위로 높이는 것도 행위책에 기록되어 있고 그 행위를 따라 심판을 받는 것입니다.
그렇다면 구제하고 선교하면 심판을 받는다는 것입니까? 행위 자체가 심판의 이유가 되는 것은 없습니다. 문제는 행위로 자신을 판단하는 것입니다. 즉 행위에 의의 의미를 두는 것입니다. 열심히 구제하고 선교했기 때문에 구원과 복을 받을 것으로 기대하는 것이 자기 행위를 의로운 것으로 간주하는 것이고 그것이 심판의 이유가 됩니다. 예수님이 흘리신 피의 가치를 자신의 행위로 덮어버리고 모독한 것이기 때문입니다.
교회가 경건한 생활에 대해 강조합니다. 신자라면 경건한 생활을 해야 하고 그것이 하나님을 기쁘시게 하고 복을 받는 것으로 가르칩니다. 기독교인들도 당연한 말로 받아들이면서 경건하게 살려고 노력하기도 합니다. 하지만 그 모든 것이 헛된 일입니다. 의인들의 행위 따라 악인이 상 받게 하시는 것이 하나님의 행사이기 때문입니다.
지금의 기독교인들은 정말 중요한 사실 하나를 놓치고 있습니다. 인간의 행위로는 심판 받을 것 밖에 없다는 것입니다. 이것을 모르기 때문에 하나님을 기쁘시게 하고 복을 받게 하는 행위가 있다고 믿는 것이고 그러한 행위가 있는 것을 경건한 생활로 분류하는 것입니다. 하지만 행위에 의의 의미를 두는 결과는 행위책에 기록된 행위를 따라 심판 받는 것뿐입니다. 이것이 하나님의 보좌입니다.
15절에 보면 “이에 내가 희락을 찬양하노니 이는 사람이 먹고 마시고 즐거워하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 해 아래에는 없음이라 하나님이 사람을 해 아래에서 살게 하신 날 동안 수고하는 일 중에 그러한 일이 그와 함께 있을 것이니라”고 말합니다.
신자라고 해서 신자다운 경건한 생활이 따로 요구되는 것이 아닙니다. 우리가 별 것 아닌 것으로 여기는 먹고 마시는 것으로 즐거워하는 것이 신자로 사는 것입니다. 전 2:24절에서 먹고 마시고 수고하는 모든 것이 하나님의 손에서 나오는 것으로 말한 것처럼 우리가 먹고 마시는 모든 것이 하나님의 손에서 베풀어지는 은총입니다. 다만 먹고 마시는 것으로 족한 줄을 모르는 욕망이 은총을 은총으로 여기지 않는 것입니다.
먹고 마시는 것이 하나님의 손에서 베풀어지는 은총이라면 인간은 먹고 마실 자격도 없다는 뜻입니다. 자격도 없는 자에게 베풀어지는 것이 은총이기 때문입니다. 우리는 별 것 아닌 날로 여겼던 하루하루가 사실은 은총으로 베풀어지는 복된 날이었던 것입니다.
17절에서 말한 것처럼 우리는 하나님의 행사를 알아낼 수 없습니다. 하나님의 행사가 우리의 기대를 충족시키기 위한 것이 아니기 때문입니다. 그래서 하나님의 행사에 대해 늘 실망하고 원망하기도 합니다. 그러한 우리를 하나님은 먹고 마시고 수고하며 살게 합니다. 인간이 하나님의 행사에 대해 알아야 할 이유가 없습니다. 하나님이 주신 하루하루가 은총과 은혜로 가득한 선물이기 때문입니다. 하나님의 은혜가 살게 하는 것이 즐거움이 되면 됩니다.
Chapter 36
The Work Of God
There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it. (Ecclesiastes 8:14-17 KJV)
(Sermon)
Those who don’t know God live in the principle of what they do, called ‘retributive justice.’ They believe it is fair that ones doing good deeds receive blessings and ones doing evil get punishment while having the criteria of good and evil. However, we see our reality doesn’t go accordingly. Nevertheless, preachers speak of the principle to the congregation, proven that they know not God.
In Verse 14, it says, “There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.”
If the just received according to the work of the wicked, no would say it is fair. If the wicked received the blessing according to the just, it would also be considered unfair. Likewise, God reigns the world in the way we can never understand. What would God really want to tell us about in such way that is against our nature?
If the just got the punishment according to the work of the wicked, the just wouldn’t feel alright because there would be no reason for the just to face such. Yet, there is a misunderstanding we have. That is, we consider the just as ones who deserve the blessing.
But, is that so? Think of the righteous in the Bible. It is not the ones who don’t sin, but the ones who are thankful for the blood of Christ as the grace of forgiveness in the awareness of the sinful nature. Thus, if we figure that it is not fair for the just to receive punishment according to the wicked, we still consider the righteous according to the work.
There is no difference as far as the work is concerned between the just and the wicked. All men are the same in terms of work. As our wickedness is to live for oneself, there is no one saying, ‘I’m better than you.’ Hence, even if the just received the punishment according to the work of the wicked, it would be no difference from the work of the just. The only difference is for the just to see the punishment not as the unfair thing but the other way.
In the Book of Revelation 20:12, it says, “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.”
There are the two kinds of books at the throne of God. One is the book of life and the others are the books of works, saying the dead are judged according to the books of works. Some say there are the records of evil deeds of men in the books of works, concluding we ought to live good.
If so, would there be the records of the good deeds of men in the book of life? Then, salvation would depend on our good works. It is to despise the grace of the cross. There is the record of the only righteous work of Christ in the book of life.
Then, where are the records of our righteous works? No doubt they are written in the books of works, including all of men’s works even good deeds: helping the needy, devotion, mission, service and so forth. Men are judged according to the works recorded there.
Then, does it mean if we help the needy and go missionary trip, we are judged? There is no reason of the judgement after the work itself. The thing is to view oneself according to the works, thinking of oneself in the value of the works. It is the reason of the judgement that one sees oneself righteous because of the works one has done such as the devotion and missionary work. It is to despise the value of the blood of Christ with one’s works.
Preachers in the modern Christianity emphasize on the life of godliness, saying our godly life makes God pleased and gives us blessings. Christians accept such teachings and try to live accordingly. Yet, all is in vain because it is God, who gives blessings to the wicked according to the just.
There is one important thing christians are missing. That is the fact that we get nothing but the judgement according to our works. Ignorant, we consider some works good, causing God to be pleased and give us blessings. Yet, all is nothing but the judgement after the books of works. This is the throne of God.
In Verse 15, it says, “Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.”
There is nothing for believers to live in the life of godliness. It is to live in thanksgiving as a believer with things given by God. As Ecclesiastes 2:24 says all is of God, eating and drinking, all is of the grace of God. The thing is our nature, viewing such not as the grace of God.
If eating and drinking is the grace of God, it means we don’t even deserve to eat or drink because grace means to give something to one who doesn’t deserve. All the days we have thought unimportant have in fact been the grace of God.
As Verse 17 says, we comprehend not the work of God. It is because the work of God is not for the satisfaction of our expectation, resulting in the fact that we end up complaining and resenting God. Yet, God lets such people like us live, eating and drinking. There is no reason for us to know the work of God because we are living in the gift of God, full of grace day by day. It is sufficient for our happiness to live in such grace of God!
