9.네 헛된 평생의 모든 날 곧 하나님이 해 아래에서 네게 주신 모든 헛된 날에 네가 사랑하는 아내와 함께 즐겁게 살지어다 그것이 네가 평생에 해 아래에서 수고하고 얻은 네 몫이니라
10.네 손이 일을 얻는 대로 힘을 다하여 할지어다 네가 장차 들어갈 스올에는 일도 없고 계획도 없고 지식도 없고 지혜도 없음이니라
<설교>
바울은‘누구든 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물’이라고 합니다(고후 5:17). 새로운 피조물은 하나님의 새로운 창조물이라는 뜻입니다. 창세기에서 언급되는 처음 피조물인 인간이 아니라 그리스도 안에서 새롭게 창조된 자가 신자라는 것입니다.
이처럼 신자는 신자 되기 전의 처음 피조물의 상태에서 새로운 피조물이 된 사람입니다. 그렇다면 신자 되기 전과 신자 된 후에 자신이 어떻게 다른가를 알아야 합니다. 새로운 피조물이 어떻게 다른가를 모르면 신자의 존재됨을 다른 것으로 확인하려고 할 것이고 결국 혼란과 착각만 초래할 것입니다. 이것이 현대 기독교인들의 현실입니다. 새로운 피조물이라는 신자 됨에 대한 이해가 없기 때문에 세상이 인정하는 변화로 자신의 존재와 신앙을 확인하려고 하는 것입니다.
전 1:9-10절에 보면 “이미 있던 것이 후에 다시 있겠고 이미 한 일을 후에 다시 할지라 해 아래에는 새 것이 없나니 무엇을 가리켜 이르기를 보라 이것이 새 것이라 할 것이 있으랴 우리가 있기 오래 전 세대들에도 이미 있었느니라”고 말합니다.
반면에 바울은 “그런즉 누구든지 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라 이전 것은 지나갔으니 보라 새 것이 되었도다”(고후 5:17)라고 말합니다.
새 것이 없다는 것과 새 것이 있다는 것은 육신을 기준으로 구분됩니다. 세상은 아담 안에서 육신을 따라 삽니다. 그 점에서 해 아래에는 새 것이 없습니다. 하지만 그리스도 안에서 새로운 피조물 된 신자는 육신이 아닌 성령을 따라 삽니다. 이것이 세상에 존재하지 않은 새 것입니다. 육신을 따라 사는 사람은 세상에서 부와 권력을 얻어 이름이 높아지는 것이 인생의 성공이라고 하지만 성령을 따라 사는 사람은 그리스도 안에서 죄가 용서된 자로 생명에 속하게 된 것을 인생의 복과 성공으로 알게 되는 것이 새롭고 다른 것입니다.
문제는 이러한 내용들을 충분히 이해한다 해도 실제적인 삶과는 단절되는 것입니다. 새 것이 아니든 새 것이 되었든 우리는 소유가 없고 고통이 되는 인생을 싫어합니다. 이것이 당연합니다. 새로운 피조물이 되었다 해도 육신을 향한 욕망은 강한 세력으로 우리 안에서 우리를 흔들고 불안과 걱정과 실망으로 끌어가기 때문입니다. 하지만 이것을 그리스도 안에 있지 않은 증거로 여긴다면 또 다른 불안과 두려움에 흔들리는 결과가 될 것입니다.
그런데 9절에서 전도자는 “네 헛된 평생의 모든 날 곧 하나님이 해 아래에서 네게 주신 모든 헛된 날에 네가 사랑하는 아내와 함께 즐겁게 살지어다 그것이 네가 평생에 해 아래에서 수고하고 얻은 네 몫이니라”고 말합니다.
하나님이 우리에게 주신 날을 헛된 날로 말하는 이유가 무엇일까요? 하나님이 주신 날이라면 헛된 날이 아니라 의미 있는 좋은 날이어야 한다고 생각할 것입니다. 하지만 말씀드린 것처럼 해 아래에는 새 것이 없고, 새 것이 없는 평생의 모든 날 또한 하나님이 주셨고 하나님이 살게 하신 날입니다. 그런데 우리는 하나님이 주신 날이라고 하면서도 부끄럽고 힘들고 고통스러운 인생은 싫어합니다. 이것이 하나님과의 관계에 있지 못하는 것이며 헛된 날을 사는 인생의 실상입니다.
그러면 헛된 날에 우리가 원하는 인생 성공을 거두는 것이 과연 의미 있는 것일까요? 헛된 날이라고 하는 것은 우리가 이루었다고 자랑하는 모든 것이 헛되다는 뜻입니다. 생명이 되지 못하는 것들이기 때문입니다. 모든 것을 이루었다고 자부하며 뭇 사람들의 부러움을 사는 인생을 살았다는 사람들도 하나님이 주신 날이 다하면 세상에서 사라집니다. 그들이 먹고 마시며 누리고 즐겼던 모든 것이 무의미한 것입니다. 그래서 인생을 잘 사는 것은 하나님이 주신 날에 하나님이 주신 것으로 즐거워하는 것입니다.
7절을 보면 “너는 가서 기쁨으로 네 음식물을 먹고 즐거운 마음으로 네 포도주를 마실지어다 이는 하나님이 네가 하는 일들을 벌써 기쁘게 받으셨음이니라”고 말합니다.
인생의 마지막을 생각해 보십시오. 사람이 각기 살아가는 삶의 질이 다르겠지만 마지막의 자리에서 생각해 보면 전혀 의미 없는 것들입니다. 무엇을 하며 어떻게 살았는가 하는 것 역시 무의미합니다. 그것조차 마지막의 때에서는 무의미한 것으로 드러나기 때문입니다.
그런데 전도자는 하나님이 우리가 하는 일들을 벌써 기쁘게 받으셨다고 합니다. 세상이 높이고 인정하는 대단한 일을 기쁘게 받으신다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 하나님을 기쁘게 하겠다는 의도로 행하는 일들이 헛되다는 것입니다. 신자는 이미 그리스도 안에서 하나님이 받으신 자로 존재하기 때문입니다.
신자의 삶은 특별한 것이 아닙니다. 특별하고 대단한 일을 하여 신자 됨을 보여주는 것이 새로운 피조물로 사는 것이 아닙니다. 그리스도 안에서 죄에서 벗어나 거룩한 자로 여김 받아 생명에 속한 자로 살아가는 새로운 세상에 대한 눈이 열린 것이 새로운 피조물입니다. 이처럼 새로움에 대한 눈이 열리면 세상이 말하는 인생 성공이 무의미한 것으로 보게 됩니다. 물론 인생 성공을 원하는 욕망이 있음은 부인할 수 없지만 이러한 욕망으로 헤매는 죄를 예수의 피가 대신했다는 사실이 더 큰 기쁨으로 다가오게 되는 것입니다.
그래서 신자에게 인생의 미래는 불안이나 염려로 다가오지 않습니다. 어떤 인생을 산다 해도 그리스도 안에 있는 인생이란 것으로 잘 된 것이기 때문입니다. 이런 이유로 신자는 하나님이 주신 날에 기쁨으로 먹고 마시면 됩니다. 하나님이 주신 현재의 것이 인생을 즐기기에 전혀 부족하지 않다는 것입니다. 만약 현재의 것으로는 인생을 즐길 수 없다고 생각한다면 그것이 곧 육신에 머물러 육신으로 살고자 하는 죄입니다.
10절을 보면 “네 손이 일을 얻는 대로 힘을 다하여 할지어다 네가 장차 들어갈 스올에는 일도 없고 계획도 없고 지식도 없고 지혜도 없음이니라”고 말합니다.
세상에서의 우리 일이 의미 있는 것이면 스올이라고 하는 죽음의 세상에까지 우리가 한 일이 연결되어야 합니다. 그런 점에서 스올에서는 일도 계획도 지식도 없다는 것은 세상에서의 일과 수고와 계획이 무의미하다는 것입니다. 무의미하기 때문에 아무것도 하지 말라는 것이 하나님이 일하고 살게 하신 것으로 감사하라는 것입니다.
사람들은 자기 이름을 높일 수 있고 스스로 보람을 느낄 수 있는 일에 의미를 둡니다. 그래서 먹고 마시는 일에서 기쁨을 즐거움을 놓치고 사랑하는 아내와 함께 즐겁게 살지도 못합니다. 그리스도를 알게 되면 모든 것이 은혜입니다. 이 은혜가 인생을 즐겁게 합니다.
Chapter 38
Joyfully In The Life of Vanity
Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.
Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.
Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. (Ecclesiastes 9:7-10 KJV)
(Sermon)
Paul says in 2nd Corinthians 5:17, ‘if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.’ ‘A new creature’ means God’s new creation, implying it’s not the one in the Book of Genesis, but a new one created in Christ, a believer.
Thus, a believer is one changed from the first condition of creation to the new one. Then, we need to know the difference between them. Otherwise, there would be a confusion with other things for being a believer. This is the reality of the modern Christianity. Since there is no understanding of the new creation, they would make sure of the change and faith with worldly things, visible.
In Ecclesiastes 1:9-10, it says, “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.”
On the contrary, Paul says in 2nd Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
‘If there is a new creation or not’ is dependent on ‘flesh.’ People in the world live according to the flesh. In this sense, there is no new thing. Yet, new creatures, believers, in Christ live according to the Spirit, not the flesh. This is a new thing, which the world has not. Whereas those living according to the flesh say the success of life is to have riches and power, lifting up their names, those living according to the Spirit say the success of life is to live in the forgiveness of sins in Christ, belonging to the life.
The thing is even if we fully have knowledge, it is not practical at all. No matter what we are, we wouldn’t like to live in poverty and pain, which is obvious. It is because our desire in flesh draws us into anxiety and worries and disappointments even if we are new creatures. Yet, if we consider such phenomenon as the evidence of not being in Christ, there will be another anxiety and fear.
Then, the Preacher says in Verse 9, “Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.”
Why is he calling all the days given by God vanity? Shouldn’t it be good days if it is given by God? Yet, as spoken earlier, there is no new thing under the sun, and all the days are given by God, letting us live. Yet, we say all the days are of God, but we hate the days of shame and pain. This is the fact that we are not in the relationship with God and our reality.
Then, is it meaningful to have what we consider success in the days of vanity? ‘The days of vanity’ means all things we have achieved are vain because there is no life. No matter what we have done, we all disappear in the days of God. Whatever we have done is vain. Thus, having a good life is to enjoy what is given by God in the days God has given.
In Verse 7, it says, “Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.”
Think of our last day. Even if there are different qualities of life, all are meaningless at the last moment of life. What we have done is no meaning either at the last day.
Yet, the Preacher says God has accepted our work gladly. Our work is not what is successful in the world. What we do to please God is in vain. It is because believers are already accepted in Christ.
The life of believers is not something special. We are not required to do something extraordinary at all as new creatures. New creatures are the sanctified ones in forgiveness who see the new world, belonging to the eternal life. They see success in the world as the vain things. There is the flesh seeking for the worldly success, but believers are in greater joy Christ has accepted such sinners through His precious blood.
That’s why there is no anxiety or worry in the future of believers because no matter how we live, it is good to be in Christ. In such reason, believers are to live in eating and drinking joyfully. There is no lacking in God’s given days. Otherwise, it is sin living according to the flesh.
In Verse 10, it says, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”
If the things we have done in the world were meaningful, they should be continued in the grave, proving all are in vain. I’m not saying not to do anything because all are in vain, but to give thanks to God for letting us work and live in the given days.
People find themselves meaningful in doing things to magnify their names. That’s why they lose all the chances of eating and drinking joyfully with their wives. It is all the grace of God for one to know Christ. Such grace makes us live joyfully!
