19.잔치는 희락을 위하여 베푸는 것이요 포도주는 생명을 기쁘게 하는 것이나 돈은 범사에 이용되느니라
20.심중에라도 왕을 저주하지 말며 침실에서라도 부자를 저주하지 말라 공중의 새가 그 소리를 전하고 날짐승이 그 일을 전파할 것임이니라
<설교>
세상에는 예측 가능한 상황이라는 것이 있습니다. 가령 “왕은 어리고 대신들은 아침부터 잔치하는 나라여 네게 화가 있도다”(16절)는 말처럼 왕이 어려서 통치행위에 미숙할 때 신하들은 왕을 무시하면서 제멋대로 행동할 수 있습니다. 그런 나라가 제대로 유지되기 힘들다는 것은 충분히 예측 할 수 있습니다.
반대로 “왕은 귀족들의 아들이요 대신들은 취하지 아니하고 기력을 보하려고 정한 때에 먹는 나라여 네게 복이 있도다”(17절)는 말처럼 귀족들의 아들이 왕이 되면 어린 왕과는 달리 권세를 가진 왕으로 나라를 잘 통치할 수 있습니다. 신하들도 자기 멋대로 행동하지 못할 것입니다. 먹는 것도 자기 기쁨을 위해 잔치하는 것이 아니라 일을 위해 건강을 지키려고 먹는다는 사고방식에 의한 것이라면 그러한 왕과 신하가 다스리는 나라는 잘 될 것이라고 예측 할 수 있는 것입니다.
18절의 “게으른즉 서까래가 내려앉고 손을 놓은즉 집이 새느니라”는 말 역시 장래일의 예측에서 나오는 말입니다. 게을러서 집을 손보고 가꾸지 않으면 여기저기 망가지고 문제가 생길 것은 누구라도 예상할 수 있는 일입니다. 그래서 그러한 문제를 미리 방지하기 위해 부지런히 손을 보고 수리하는 것입니다.
잠 12:27절에서는 “게으른 자는 그 잡을 것도 사냥하지 아니하나니 사람의 부귀는 부지런한 것이니라”는 말을 합니다. 이 또한 세상이 생각하는 원칙이며 게으른 자에 대해 예측할 수 있는 미래의 실제입니다.
19절의 “잔치는 희락을 위하여 베푸는 것이요 포도주는 생명을 기쁘게 하는 것이나 돈은 범사에 이용되느니라”는 말은 부지런히 일해서 부귀를 쌓았을 때 누릴 수 있는 미래의 삶을 생각하게 합니다.
게을러서 가난하게 되면 희락을 위한 잔치를 베풀 수 없습니다. 기분을 좋게 하는 포도주도 마실 수 없습니다. 이 모든 일에는 반드시 돈이 필요합니다. 돈이 없으면 잔치도 포도주도 없습니다. 이처럼 돈은 인생의 희락과 기쁨을 위해 범사에 이용되는 것이기 때문에 누구나 부지런히 일해서 돈을 벌려고 하는 것입니다.
사람들이 장래 일을 예측 하는 것은 현재의 상황이나 조건에 기반을 둡니다. 왕이 어리고 대신들은 아침부터 잔치하며 정치에 관심이 없는 상황에서 누구라도 예측할 수 있는 것은 나라가 쇠퇴하는 것입니다. 나라가 부강해질 수 있는 조건으로 요구되는 것이 왕과 신하들이 정치를 잘하는 것이기 때문입니다.
사실 우리는 이러한 원칙을 가지고 미래를 예측합니다. 자식이 공부를 못할 때 부모가 자식의 미래에 대해 불안해하는 것도 현재의 상황과 조건에 기준을 두고 미래를 예측한다는 뜻입니다. ‘공부를 잘하면 성공하고 잘 산다’는 일반적 원칙 안에서 공부를 못하는 것 하나로 미래를 마음대로 예측하는 것입니다.
물론 공부를 잘하면 좋은 회사에 취직을 하고 남들보다 더 많은 돈을 벌수는 있습니다. 하지만 우리가 반드시 짚고 넘어갈 것은 공부를 잘하고 좋은 회사에 취직하고 돈을 많이 벌고 부귀를 누리게 된 그것이 반드시 행복과 기쁨이라는 결과로 맺어지는가 하는 것입니다. 돈이 우리 인생에서 범사에 이용되는 것이긴 하지만 돈이 우리 인생으로 하여금 행복과 기쁨을 누리게 하는 것은 아닙니다. 이것은‘돈이 인생의 전부가 아니다’는 일반적 교훈에 의한 것이 아니라 돈이 인생에서 겪을 수 있는 모든 고통과 아픔을 막아주는 것은 아니기 때문입니다.
세상은 자신의 꿈을 이루기 위해 열심히 노력하라고 말합니다. 그리고 피나는 노력으로 자기의 꿈을 이루기도 합니다. 하지만 분명한 것은 그것이 반드시 인생의 행복과 기쁨의 조건으로 자리하는 것은 아니라는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 인생에서 일어날 일에 대해 누구도 알지 못하기 때문입니다.
그렇다면 되는대로 살아야 한다는 것일까요? 성경은 되는대로 살라고 가르치지 않습니다. 다만 진정한 장래의 일이 무엇이며 무엇이 인생의 행복과 기쁨이 되는가를 말해주고 있습니다. 다시 말해서 세상에서의 인생의 미래가 아니라 영혼의 미래, 영혼의 장래 일을 보여주는 것이 성경입니다.
14절에 보면 “우매한 자는 말을 많이 하거니와 사람은 장래 일을 알지 못하나니 나중에 일어날 일을 누가 그에게 알리리요”라고 말합니다.
우매한 자의 특징은 장래 일을 알지 못하다는 것입니다. 왕이 어리고 대신들이 아침부터 잔치하면 나라에 화가 있고 게으르면 서까래가 내려앉고 손을 놓으면 집이 샌다는 나중 일은 예측을 하면서도 하나님의 용서를 모르는 자는 영원한 심판에 들어가게 되는 장래 일에 대해서는 무감각하고 알지도 못합니다. 이처럼 장래 일을 알지 못한 자가 부지런하여 부귀를 누리게 된다 했을 때 그것을 과연 잘된 인생이라고 할 수 있을지를 장래 일 안에서 깊이 생각해야 하는 것입니다.
20절을 보면 “심중에라도 왕을 저주하지 말며 침실에서라도 부자를 저주하지 말라 공중의 새가 그 소리를 전하고 날짐승이 그 일을 전파할 것임이니라”고 말합니다.
왕을 저주한다면 이유는 무엇일까요? 16절의 상황처럼 왕과 신하들이 나를 제대로 운영하지 못해서 나에게 해가 미쳤다고 생각될 때일 것입니다. 대통령을 욕하거나 칭찬하는 이유도 같습니다. 내 뜻에 맞게 정치를 하지 않을 때, 나에게 손해가 되는 정책을 펼칠 때 대통령을 욕하는 것입니다.
결국 왕이든 부자든 저주를 하게 되는 이유의 중심에는 자기 자신이 있습니다. 자신이 예측한 것과 전혀 다른 결과가 주어졌을 때 그에 대한 불만이 저주로 표현된다고 할 수 있습니다. 자신의 불행과 아픔의 이유를 왕이 정치를 잘못한 것에 두는 것입니다. 바꾸어 말하면 왕이 정치를 잘했으면 내가 불행하지 않고 행복을 것이라는 또 다른 예측이 불만을 낳는다고 할 수 있습니다.
목사도 교인을 바라보며 자신만의 예측을 합니다. ‘교인들이 이렇게 해주면 교회가 부흥되고 교인들 모두가 기쁨을 누릴 수 있다’는 예측입니다. 그런데 교인들이 자신의 기대대로 되지 않을 때 그에 대한 불만은 교인을 저주하는 것으로 이어집니다. ‘열심히 봉사하지 않고 교회 일에 게으르면 복 받지 못하고 징계 받는다’는 식입니다.
그런데 우리가 세상일을 두고 예측을 하는 것은 하나님의 다스림으로 산다는 것을 부인하는 것과 같습니다. 결국 미래 일을 예측하는 것이나 예측대로 되지 않아 불만이 있게 되는 모든 것은 우리가 하나님을 신앙하지 않는다는 증거로 드러납니다. 그래서 우리에게 진심으로 있어야 하는 것은 하나님의 용서입니다. 하나님의 용서 안에서 장래 일을 예측해 보십시오.
Chapter 45
Curse Not
Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.
Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter. (Ecclesiastes 10:16-20 KJV)
(Sermon)
There are things we can expect to happen. For instance, as Verse 16 says, “Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!”, when a king is immature due to his young age, his servants are uncontrollable. Then, we can easily expect the country is hard to be reigned by the king.
On the other hand, when the son of nobles becomes the king of the country, he can rule it well unlike the young king as Verse 17 says, “Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!” The servants will be obedient. Knowing that eating is for strength, not for drunkenness, we can expect the country will be well governed by the king and his servants.
Verse 18, “By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through”, is of expectations as well. We foresee an ill-managed house will be broken soon, so we know we need to prevent such problems by renovation and maintenance time to time.
In Proverbs 12:27, it says, “The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.” This is the principle the world also thinks and the future we can anticipate for the lazy.
In Verse 19, it says, “A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things”, reminding us of the future we can enjoy in the case of saving money for joy and pleasure.
The poor due to laziness can neither hold a feast nor drink wine. Money is needed for all occasions, including feast and wine. That’s why people would earn money diligently.
Our expectations are based on the current conditions or situations. If a king is childish and his servants aren’t interested in assisting their king, having a feast in the morning, we can find the country will shortly be broken down because the condition of a strong country is rulers’ good political skills.
In fact, we expect what will happen with such principles. That we are anxious about our children doing poorly at school also means that we anticipate things with a thought, ‘a person with academic success will be rich and successful in life.’
Of course, it is true that academic success could provide better jobs and higher income, but we have to ask ourselves if those conditions will result in happiness and joy. Although it is not wrong to say money is useful, it is also true to say that money can’t make us happy and joyful. I don’t mean to say, ‘money is not everything’ as a general lesson, but money can’t prevent all pain and sadness from us.
People say to work hard to make dream come true, and we see many really do so with great efforts and zeal. Yet, one thing for sure is that this is not the perfect condition of our joy and happiness because we don’t know what will happen tomorrow.
Then, do I mean to say to live however we wish to live? That’s not what the Bible teaches us. It tells us what our true future is and true happiness and joy is. In other words, the Bible shows us the future eternal for our souls, not the future ephemeral for our flesh.
In Verse 14, it says, “A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?”
A fool knows not what the future holds. Even though we know an immature leader and indifferent politicians can’t govern the country, laziness can cause poverty, and poor maintenance destroys the house, we know not that the judgement of God is upon those with ignorance of the forgiveness of God. Likewise, we must ponder deeply if one not knowing such future becomes successful in riches is well done.
In Verse 20, it says, “Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.”
Why do you think one curses the king? It is probably that one thinks one will get harm done because of the king and the servants in Verse 16. When we commend or criticize our President, it is the same reason. We criticize him when he executes with things that could cause us to have losses.
Whether cursing a king or president, the main reason lies in our self-centered mind. As we receive results different from our expectation, our dissatisfaction ends up being our cursing. We tend to blame the leader for our dissatisfactory situations and pain. In other words, our another expectation, ‘if the president had conducted his job better, I wouldn’t be this bad’, is the cause of our unhappiness.
Preachers also expect something while looking at the congregation like ‘if they are more dedicated, the number will grow and they will rejoice. Yet, he comes to resent the congregation when things go different from his expectations, saying, “if you are not dedicated enough for God, you won’t be blessed but disciplined by God.
However, that we expect things in the world means we deny the fact that we are living under God’s reigning. Our unbelief is revealed by our wishes and dissatisfaction of things in the world. Thus, what is truthfully needed for us is the forgiveness of God. Let us look forward to things in the time to come in God’s forgiveness!
