이 심판이라는 것을 굳게 믿습니다. 그리고 기독교가 이해하는 심판은 사람이 죽은 후나 역사의 종말이 이르렀을 때 잘잘못을 따져서 선을 행한 사람은 천국으로, 악을 행한 사람은 지옥으로 가게 한다는 것입니다. 하지만 어쩌면 심판에 대한 이러한 이해가 현세는 마치 심판과 상관이 없는 것처럼 생각하게 하거나 ‘오늘 못했으면 내일 잘하면 된다’는 생각을 하게 하는 이유일 수도 있습니다.
성경은 분명히 역사의 종말과 마지막 때에 있을 심판을 언급합니다. 우린 그것을 마 24,25장에서 확인할 수 있습니다. 마 25:46절에서 “그들은 영벌에, 의인들은 영생에 들어가리라 하시니라”고 말씀하는 것처럼 마지막 때가 되면 악인은 영벌에 들어가고 의인은 영생에 들어간다는 것으로 알고 있습니다. 이렇게 마지막 때는 돌이킬 기회가 없습니다. 그것에 비하면 마지막 때가 이르기 전의 지금은 어쨌든 잘못을 깨닫고 돌이킬 기회는 있다고 생각하는 것입니다. 그래서 ‘오늘 못했으면 내일이라도 잘하자’라는 생각을 하게 됩니다.
그런데 사람이 심판에 대해 이러한 생각을 하게 된다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는 것일까요? 24절을 보면 “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 내 말을 듣고 또 나 보내신 이를 믿는 자는 영생을 얻었고 심판에 이르지 아니하나니 사망에서 생명으로 옮겼느니라”고 말씀합니다.
여러분은 이런 구절에서 무엇을 생각합니까? 혹 ‘영생을 얻으려면 예수님을 보내신 하나님을 잘 믿어야겠다’라는 생각은 하지 않습니까? 또 25절에서 “진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 죽은 자들이 하나님의 아들의 음성을 들을 때가 오나니 곧 이 때라 듣는 자는 살아나리라”고 말씀하는 것을 보면서 어떻게 하면 아들의 음성을 들을 있을까?라는 생각은 하지 않습니까?
그런데 그러한 생각들이 하나님의 심판을 피해보고자 하는 불순한 의도에서 비롯된 것임을 먼저 생각해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 믿음의 방향을 심판을 피한 자기 구원에 두는 것이기 때문입니다. 결국 심판에 대해 선포함으로 자기중심적인 인간의 불의한 속성과 의도가 드러나게 되는 것입니다.
여러분은 하나님의 심판이 어떻게 실행된다고 생각합니까? 대개는 모든 사람이 하나님의 심판대 앞에 서게 되어 예수를 믿은 자와 믿지 않은 자로 구분되면서 천국과 지옥으로 나눠진다고 생각할 것입니다. 하지만 우리가 생각해야 할 문제는 심판이 언제 어떻게 실행되는가보다는 심판에 대한 말씀 앞에서 우리가 무엇을 생각하는가? 입니다.
28절에 보면 “이를 놀랍게 여기지 말라 무덤 속에 있는 자가 다 그의 음성을 들을 때가 오나니 선한 일을 행한 자는 생명의 부활로, 악한 일을 행한 자는 심판의 부활로 나오리라”고 말합니다.
많은 사람들이 이 구절을 보면서 생명의 부활로 나오기 위해 선한 일을 행해야 한다고 생각합니다. 성경에서 자신이 구원 받고 천국가기 위한 방법을 찾는 것입니다. 이것은 자신이 악을 행한 자고 따라서 심판의 부활로 나오는 것이 당연한 존재라는 것을 간과한 것이 됩니다. 이렇게 불의한 우리는 성경을 보면서 그 불의의 모습이 적나라하게 드러나는 것입니다. 이것부터 우리가 먼저 직시해야 합니다.
자신이 죄인임을 말하면서도 ‘심판의 부활이 아닌 생명의 부활로 나오기 위해 선한 일을 행하자’라고 생각한다면 그는 죄인이 어떤 존재인가를 알지 못하고 바리새인처럼 의인의 자리에 있을 뿐입니다. 진심으로 자신에게서 불의함을 보는 사람은 생명의 부활과 심판의 부활에서 자신이 가야 할 길은 심판의 부활임을 자인하게 됩니다. 이런 사람이 생명의 부활로 오신 분을 바라보게 되는 것입니다.
그렇게 보면 자신이 심판의 부활로 나와야 할 자라는 것을 알지 못한 이들이 이미 하나님의 심판 아래 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 이들이 바로 하나님이 보내신 아들을 공경하지 않고 아들을 보내신 아버지도 공경하지 않은 자들이기 때문입니다.
22-23절을 보면 “아버지께서 아무도 심판하지 아니하시고 심판을 다 아들에게 맡기셨으니 이는 모든 사람으로 아버지를 공경하는 것 같이 아들을 공경하게 하려 하심이라 아들을 공경하지 아니하는 자는 그를 보내신 아버지도 공경하지 아니하느니라”고 말합니다.
심판을 아들에게 맡기셨다고 합니다. 고후 5:10절의 “이는 우리가 다 반드시 그리스도의 심판대 앞에 나타나게 되어 각각 선악간에 그 몸으로 행한 것을 따라 받으려 함이라”는 말씀에서도 그리스도의 심판대라는 말을 합니다.
하지만 “네가 어찌하여 네 형제를 비판하느냐 어찌하여 네 형제를 업신여기느냐 우리가 다 하나님의 심판대 앞에 서리라”(롬 14:10)는 말씀처럼 하나님의 심판대라고도 말합니다. 또한 본문 22절에서는 아버지께서는 아무도 심판하지 않으시고 심판을 다 아들에게 맡기셨다고 하지만 성경은 분명 하나님이 심판하신다는 말씀을 하고 있습니다.
한편으로 생각하면 ‘하나님의 심판대든 그리스도의 심판대든 같은 의미가 아닌가?’라고 생각할 수 있습니다. 그런데도 굳이 본문에서 심판의 권한을 아들에게 맡기셨다고 하는 것은, 하나님의 심판의 권한이 아들에게 이양되어서 하나님은 심판하지 않으신다는 의미가 아니라 심판의 기준이 하나님이 보내신 아들 예수라는 사실을 의미하는 것으로 이해할 수 있습니다.
유대인은 하나님을 믿는 사람들입니다. 하지만 아들을 보내신 하나님은 아닙니다. 그들은 하나님이 아들을 보내셨다는 사실을 받아들이지 않았고 다만 율법을 주신 하나님만 생각했습니다. 그렇기 때문에 율법을 잘 지킨다고 생각하는 자신들은 하나님의 심판대에 서도 당연히 영생을 받을 자로 믿은 것입니다.
하지만 심판을 아들에게 맡기셨다면 그들이 믿는 하나님으로는 구원을 받을 수 없게 됩니다. 아들을 보내신 하나님이 참된 하나님이시고, 하나님이 보내신 아들을 믿는 것이 곧 하나님을 믿는 것이기 때문입니다.
이렇게 말하면 ‘유대인은 아들을 보내신 하나님을 믿지 않았지만 나는 하나님이 아들을 보내신 것을 알고 아들도 믿는다. 그러므로 나는 생명의 부활로 나온다’라고 생각하는 사람도 있을 것입니다. 만약 여러분에게도 그러한 생각이 있다면 ‘과연 아들을 믿는가?’라고 깊이 생각해 보기 바랍니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 아들을 믿지 않는 존재이기 때문입니다.
신자에게 있어야 할 싸움은 항상 이것입니다. 우리의 내면에는 불의한 유혹의 속삭임이 있습니다. ‘나는 예수님을 믿는 자다. 열심히 예배를 드리고 전도도 하고 선교도 하는 것이 그 증거다’라는 생각이 바로 그것입니다. 자기 스스로 자기 믿음을 인정해 버리는 것입니다.
23절에 보면 공경이라는 말을 합니다. 예수님을 공경하는 것이 예수님을 믿는 것입니다. 우리가 예수님을 공경할 수 있는 것은 예수님이 세상에 오셔서 행하신 모든 일에 대해 감사하는 것입니다. ‘나는 예수님으로 인해 삽니다’라는 믿음이 곧 공경이며 예수님을 사랑하는 것입니다.
누구든 예수님으로 인해 산다면 그에게 만족은 예수님입니다. 이 말이 무슨 뜻인지 아실 것입니다. 자신의 수중에 무엇이 있든, 또한 어떤 형편에 처해 있든 예수님이 만족이 된다면 불만이 없이 기쁨과 감사가 있게 됩니다. 우리의 믿음의 현실이 과연 그렇습니까? 그래서 우리는 예수님을 공경하지 않는 자들이고 심판의 부활이 마땅한 것입니다.
지금까지 말씀드린 것처럼 인간의 본래 마음으로는 예수님을 공경하지 않습니다. 모든 관심이 자기에게로 향할 뿐입니다. 그래서 인간은 죽은 자입니다. 이것으로 모든 인간은 죽음에 갇힌 자로 심판 아래 있습니다. 이 심판이 현재는 드러나지 않고 감추어져 있을 뿐입니다. 영원한 생명의 영광이 감추어져 있는 것과 같습니다. 하지만 예수님이 재림하시고 역사의 종말이 도래 하게 되면 감추어진 생명과 심판의 실체가 드러납니다. 그것이 마지막 때입니다.
이렇게 죽음에 갇힌 자로 심판 아래 있는 우리를 살리기 위해 예수님이 오셨습니다. 이것을 요 5:21절에서 “아버지께서 죽은 자들을 일으켜 살리심 같이 아들도 자기가 원하는 자들을 살리느니라”고 말씀합니다. 그래서 자신이 죽은 자임을 아는 사람이 예수님이 생명이라는 사실에 마음에 열리게 되는 것입니다.
그렇다면 무엇이 심판의 기준일까요? 죽은 자가 죽음이라는 자기 실체를 알지 못하고 산 자로 행세하는 것입니다. 그로 인해 아들의 음성을 듣지 못하고 하나님의 일도 보지 못합니다. 이것이 악한 일을 행하는 것이고 심판의 부활로 나오게 되는 이유입니다.
계 3:1절을 보면 사데교회를 향해서 살았다 하는 이름은 가졌으나 죽은 자라고 말씀합니다. 이렇게 믿음은 죽은 자로부터 시작합니다. 그런데 대개의 기독교인들은 ‘예수님으로 인해 산 자 되었다’는 것으로 시작합니다. 그리고 산 자 된 것을 자신의 믿음의 활동에서 확인합니다. 이 때문에 십자가가 아닌 자기 공로를 자랑하게 됩니다. 죽은 자라는 인간의 본질을 외면하기에 인간에게서는 의의 공로가 나올 수 없음을 간과하는 것입니다. 이것이 예수님을 공경하지 않는 악한 일을 행하는 것입니다.
사람은 마음에 하나님 두기를 싫어하고 하나님은 그들을 상실한 마음대로 내버려 두십니다. 이것이 현재의 심판입니다. 하나님이 내 버려두셨다면 그에게 생명의 희망은 없습니다. 하나님이 없는 마음으로 자기를 위해 살다가 결국 심판의 부활로 나오게 됩니다. 하지만 하나님이 택한 백성들은 새 영과 새 마음을 주셔서 마음에 하나님 뒤를 싫어한 자신의 실상을 보게 하시고 아들로 인한 하나님의 생명 사건에 마음을 두게 하십니다. 이것이 예수님이 행하신 구원입니다.
마지막 때에는 감추어져 있는 생명의 영광과 심판이 드러난다고 했습니다. 그런 의미에서 신자에게 심판은 기쁜 날입니다. 감추어져 있던 하늘의 생명과 영광이 드러나 모든 것을 알게 되는 날이기 때문입니다. 그래서 신자는 마지막 때를 기다립니다. ‘나는 심판 받지 않는다’는 것 때문이 아니라 감추어져 있는 것을 알게 되는 기쁨 때문입니다.

Faith and Judgement
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. (John 5:24-29 KJV)

We firmly believe in judgement. The common understanding of judgement in Christianity is that after death or at the end of the world, God judges good and bad people, sending either heaven or hell. Yet, such understanding of judgement may mislead people to think it has nothing to do with the present or 'tomorrow, I can make up things that I didn't today.'
The Bible surely mentions the end of the world and the judgement then. We can see it in Matthew Chapter 24 and 25. In Matthew 25:46, it says, "And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal." We know the wicked go to hell and the righteous go to heaven. There is no second chance. Thus, we might think before that judgement there are chances to correct things, resulting in a thought, 'I ought to do better tomorrow than today.'
Then, what is such understanding of judgement telling us about? In Verse 24, it says, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."
What do you see from the verse? Do you think you believe in God very well, who sent His Son, to receive the eternal life? In Verse 25, it says, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live." Do you wonder how to hear His voice from this verse?
However, we should know such understandings are from the wicked intention to avoid the judgement because the direction of faith is toward ourselves who have crossed over death to life, revealing our unrighteous character and intent from our self-centered nature.
How do you think God performs His judgement? Most think that when everyone stands at God's judgement seat, God will send believers to heaven and non-believers to hell. However, what we need to focus on is not 'when and how it is executed', but 'what we ought to think of before the judgement in the Word of God.'
Verse 28 and 29 say, "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation."
Many people think they have to do good in order to belong to the resurrection of life, looking for a way of their salvation. Yet, they disregard a fact that they just deserve to have resurrection of damnation with their evil deeds. Likewise, our unrighteousness is revealed while reading the Bible. We ought to begin from this point.
If one says one is a sinner before God and thinks, 'I have to do good to be in the resurrection of life', one doesn't know what 'a sinner' means and still stands at the seat of a Pharisee. If one truly sees one's unrighteousness, one comes to confess one belongs to the resurrection of damnation between the two. Such come to look up to the One, who came as the resurrection of life.
In this sense, we can know those who don't know they deserve the punishment of God are already under God's judgement because they are the ones who honor neither the Son nor the Father, who sent Him.
Verse 22 and 23 say, "For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him."
Father has committed all judgement to the Son. Corinthians 5:10 talks about the judgement seat of Christ, "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."
Yet, Romans 14:10 says God's judgement seat, "You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat(NIV)." Although Verse 22 says that Father judges no man and has committed all judgement unto the Son, the Bible clearly tells us God performs the judgement.
In a sense, we might think there wouldn't be any difference between God's judgement seat and Christ's judgement seat. Yet, the reason today's passage specifies that God has given all authority of judgement unto the Son is not that God will not judge but that the criteria of God's judgement is Christ.
Jews believed in God but not the God, who sent His Son. They didn't accept the fact that God sent His Son. They only thought of God, who gave them the law, resulting in a belief that they belong to the resurrection of life since they have kept the law very well.
However, God has committed judgement to His Son, which means they can't be saved with their belief because God, who sent the Son, is the true God and believing in His Son is believing in God.
Then, some might say, "even though Jews don't believe in God, who sent Jesus, I believe in God and the Son, sent by God, so I believe I will be in the resurrection of life. If you think so, ponder if you indeed believe in the Son because we are the ones who can't believe in the Son.
This is what believers should fight for. Our inner beings keep whispering us, 'I am the one who believes in the Son. I always attend the worship meetings and preach the gospel. These are the evidences.' We confirm our faith on our own.
In Verse 23, we can see the word, honor. Honoring Jesus means to believe in the Son. The fact that we can honor Him is to give thanks to Him for what He has done. 'I live by Him and for Him' is to honor Him and love Him.
If anyone lives by Jesus, the satisfaction for him or her is Jesus. I am sure you know what it means that I have just said. No matter what one has in hand now, or no matter what situations one is in, if Jesus is the satisfaction for one, one will have no complaints but thanksgiving and joy. What is the reality of our faith? That's why we don't honor Jesus and we deserve the resurrection of damnation.
As I have told you so far, our sinful nature never honors Jesus. It is only interested in itself. Therefore, men are dead, which means all are under the judgement. It is just hidden and not revealed now. It is the same as the eternal life and glory hidden. When Jesus comes back at the end of the world, the hidden life and the judgement will be revealed. This is the Last Day.
Jesus came to save us, who are captured in death under the judgement, described in John 5:21, "For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will." Thus, those who know they are dead open their minds to the fact that Jesus is the life.
Then, what is the criteria of the judgement? That is the fact that those who are dead are not aware of it and act as if they were alive. Because of this, they can't hear Him and see the work of God. This is the evil doing and the cause of the resurrection of damnation.
In Revelation 3:1, the Lord said to the church in Sardis that they have a name of being alive but are dead. Likewise, faith begins with the dead. Sadly, most christians begin with the statement, 'I have become a live one by Jesus.' Then, they confirm it with their religious activities, causing them to boast what they do, not what Jesus has done. Since they deny the sinful nature, they connive the fact that there is nothing righteous out of us. This is what they do evil.
Men hate to retain the knowledge of God and God lets them be that way. This is the judgement God is performing now. If God lets one be that way, there is no hope of life for one. One will live without God and die and come to the resurrection of damnation. However, for the children of God, He gives them a new spirit and a new heart, lets them see themselves, who hate to retain God in mind, and have them put their minds in the work of life by the Son of God. This is the salvation Jesus has done.
I have told you on the Last Day, the hidden life and glory will be revealed. In this sense, the Day of Judgement is a joyous day for believers because this is the day when they come to understand fully of the life and glory of heaven, which has been hidden. Thus believers are waiting for the day. It is not because, 'I am not going to be judged', but they will have the rapture of getting to know what has been hidden!
