현대 기독교인들이 신앙을 어떻게 이해하고 있는지에 대해 생각할 때마다 떨쳐버릴 수 없는 것은 너무나 많은 부분이 왜곡되어 있다는 것입니다. 그리고 그 중심에는 신앙을 자신이 몸담고 있는 세상에서의 번성을 보장하는 것으로 연결하는 욕망이 자리하고 있음을 생각하게 됩니다.
성경이 우리에게 증거 하는 것은 보이지 않는 세상이며 죽음에서 벗어난 생명에 대한 것임에도 불구하고 생명보다는 설사 죽음의 세상이라 해도 세상에서의 번성을 꿈꾸는 욕망이 성경을 왜곡하게 하고 결국 잘못된 신앙으로 나아가게 하는 것입니다.
그 중의 하나가 ‘승리주의’라고 할 수 있습니다. 기독교인이 불신자보다 잘되는 것이 곧 하나님이 함께 하시는 증거이며 하나님께 영광이 되기 때문에 믿음으로 인해서 가정도, 사업도, 자녀도 잘 되어야 한다는 말이 진리가 되어 교회에 팽배해져 있습니다.
이러한 승리주의에 의해서 어떤 목사는 ‘삼박자 축복’이라는 말을 하고 많은 기독교인들은 그 말을 하나님의 말씀으로 받아들입니다. 또한 ‘하면 된다’‘믿기만 하면 하지 못할 일이 없다’라는 소위 긍정적인 말이라는 것도 하나님의 말씀으로 포장되어서 승리주의를 추구하는 사람들을 흡족하게 하고 있습니다.
이처럼 세상에서의 승리를 추구 하고 그것을 하나님을 믿는 신앙의 결과로 받아들이는 사람들이 좋아하는 구절 중의 하나가 “무릇 하나님께로부터 난 자마다 세상을 이기느니라 세상을 이기는 승리는 이것이니 우리의 믿음이니라 예수께서 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 자가 아니면 세상을 이기는 자가 누구냐”(4,5절)일 것입니다.
과연 본문에서 말하는 세상을 이기는 승리가 믿지 않는 사람보다 더 번성해지고 힘이 강해지고 성공하는 것을 의미하는 것일까요? 만약 승리가 그런 것이라면 믿는 자는 모두 부자가 되고 성공해야 해야 합니다. 가난하면 신앙이 없는 것이고, 하는 일이 잘못되어서 실패하고 건강을 잃어도 신앙이 없는 것이 됩니다.
실제로 그렇게 말하는 목사도 있습니다. 신앙생활을 잘못하고 있기 때문에 징계를 받아서 실패한 것으로 말하기도 하고, 십일조 생활을 잘 하지 못해서 하나님이 건강을 잃게 한 것이라는 말도 합니다. 하지만 누구든 그런 말을 한다면 그들은 목사가 아니라는 것이 제 생각입니다.
만약 세상에서 성공하는 것이 가장 귀한 것이라면 하나님은 택한 백성에게 성공이라는 것을 주셨을 것입니다. 그리고 믿지 않는 자는 모두 실패하게 하고 가난한 삶을 살게 하셨을 것입니다. 하지만 히 6:9절의 말씀처럼 더 좋은 것은 구원에 속한 것입니다. 그러므로 성경은 세상에서 힘 있는 강한 자 되는 것을 승리라고 말하지 않고, 따라서 강한 자가 되어 승리하기 위해 예수를 믿는 것 또한 신앙이 아닌 것입니다.
사실 생존을 위해서는 강한 자 되는 것이 좋습니다. 강한 힘을 가졌다면 더 많은 것을 누릴 수 있고 더 나은 삶을 보장받을 수 있기 때문입니다. 이런 이유로 많은 기독교인들이 승리에 대한 유혹을 받는 것도 사실입니다. 죄, 저주, 심판에 대한 말을 듣는 것보다는 성공, 승리라는 희망적이며 힘을 주는 말이 더 귀를 즐겁게 해주기 때문입니다.
승리라는 말이 아무리 듣기 좋다 할지라도 막연한 기대, 또는 헛되고 허망한 생각으로 끝날 뿐입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 뭔가 희망과 기대를 갖게 하는 말을 듣고자 하는 것이 힘들고 무거운 현실을 살아가는 현대인의 심리이고, 그것을 종교꾼들이 적절히 이용하는 것입니다.
그러면 본문에서 말하는 세상을 이기는 승리는 무엇을 의미하는 것일까요? 본문을 보면 신앙은 신자로 하여금 분명 세상을 이기게 하고 승리자가 되게 합니다. 하지만 강한 힘을 가지는 승리를 의미하는 것은 아닙니다. 그것을 본문에서 생각해 보고자 합니다.
본문을 그대로 해석하게 되면 하나님께로부터 난 자는 세상을 이기는 자이고, 세상을 이기는 승리는 곧 믿음이라는 뜻이 됩니다. 다시 말해서 그리스도를 믿는 믿음으로 사는 것이 곧 세상을 이기는 승리라는 것입니다. 이것을 5절에서도 예수께서 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 자를 세상을 이기는 자로 말씀하고 있습니다.
승리의 의미가 너무 시시하다고 생각됩니까? 사람들은 믿음을 원하는 것을 얻기 위한 수단이나 방법으로 생각하는 경향이 많습니다. 믿으면 구원을 받지만 세상의 복도 받게 된다는 것입니다. 이것이 믿음에 대한 잘못된 생각입니다. 예수를 믿게 된 것이 이미 하나님에게서 더 좋은 것을 받은 것이고 세상을 이기는 것임을 알지 못하기 때문에 ‘믿으면 원하는 것을 받을 수 있다’는 유혹에 붙들리는 것입니다.
말씀드린 것처럼 구원에 속한 것이 더 좋은 것입니다. 이 말은 구원에 속한 것보다 좋은 것은 없다는 뜻입니다. 그렇다면 구원을 받았다면 그는 세상의 모든 것을 초월하여 좋은 것을 받은 것이기 때문에 승리한 자라 할 수 있습니다. 문제는 이 같은 사실을 기독교인조차 무시한다는 것입니다. 세상에서 힘이 되지 못하고 가치 있는 것으로 알아주지 않는다는 것이 이유일 것입니다.
하지만 구원에 속한 것이 더 좋은 것임을 세상이 알아보지 못하는 것은 당연합니다. 보이지 않는 것이고 세상의 힘과는 무관한 생명을 가치로 하는 것이기 때문입니다. 오직 하나님께로부터 난 하나님의 사람만이 그 가치를 알아볼 수 있기 때문에 구원에 속한 것이 더 좋은 것이라는 사실을 인정하게 된 것만으로도 그는 세상을 이긴 자가 되는 것입니다.
물론 이러한 말들이 듣기에는 은혜롭지만 현실성이 떨어지는 허허로운 느낌으로 다가오기도 할 것입니다. 돈이 힘이고 돈 앞에서는 굴복할 수밖에 없는 세상에서 믿음으로 사는 것이 곧 세상을 이기는 것이라는 말을 누가 실감할 수 있겠습니까?
세상 현실은 믿음이 돈을 이기는 것이 아니라 돈이 믿음을 이기는 것으로 드러난다고 할 수 있습니다. 믿음을 말하고 강조하는 교회조차도 돈에 매이고 돈을 힘으로 여기는 것이 현실이기 때문입니다.
분명 눈에 드러난 현실을 본다면 믿음은 이상이고 돈이 생생한 현실로 다가올 것입니다. 생존은 믿음 없이도 가능하지만 돈 없이는 가능하지 않기 때문입니다. 하지만 생존은 한시적입니다. 하나님이 부르시는 순간 생존은 종결되고 생명의 문제가 현실이 됩니다. 그리고 생존이 종결되는 순간 돈과 권력 등 세상의 모든 것 또한 종결되어 사라지게 됩니다. 믿음은 바로 생존의 종결 그 후를 생각하는 것입니다.
11,12절을 보면 “또 증거는 이것이니 하나님이 우리에게 영생을 주신 것과 이 생명이 그의 아들 안에 있는 그것이니라 아들이 있는 자에게는 생명이 있고 하나님의 아들이 없는 자에게는 생명이 없느니라”고 말합니다.
이 말씀에서 드러나는 세상을 이긴 자는 아들이 있는 자입니다. 아들 안에 생명이 있기 때문에 아들이 있는 그에게는 생명이 있습니다. 그리고 생명의 가치는 생존이 유지되는 순간이 아니라 종결된 순간 드러나게 됩니다.
생존이 어떤 형태로 유지되고 있건, 다시 말해서 세계 제일의 갑부로 힘 있는 권력자로 생존하고 있다 해도 그 모든 것이 종결되면서 더 좋은 것은 아들이 있는 것이고 구원에 속한 것임이 드러나는 것입니다. 그리고 아들을 믿는 믿음으로 산 것이 곧 세상을 이기는 승리였음이 드러나는 것입니다. 그래서 생존의 문제를 바라보면서 생존에 힘 되는 것을 믿음으로 얻고자 한다면 그는 이미 패배자의 길로 가는 것일 뿐입니다.
6-8절을 보면 “이는 물과 피로 임하신 이시니 곧 예수 그리스도시라 물로만 아니요 물과 피로 임하셨고 증언하는 이는 성령이시니 성령은 진리니라 증언하는 이가 셋이니 성령과 물과 피라 또한 이 셋은 합하여 하나이니라”고 말합니다.
요한일서에서 이러한 말을 하는 이유는 당시 ‘영지주의’라는 이단이 성행했기 때문입니다. 영지주의는 육과 영을 분리하여 육신은 악하고 영적인 것을 선한 것으로 인정했기 때문에 예수님이 육체로 부인했습니다. 하나님이신 예수 그리스도가 악한 육신을 가진 인간으로 오셨음을 받아들일 수 없었기 때문입니다.
하지만 예수님이 인간의 육신으로 오시지 않았다면 우리의 죄와 상관없는 예수일 수밖에 없습니다. 예수님이 육신으로 오셔서 죄로 인해 영원한 저주에 갇혀 있어야 할 우리의 운명에 함께 하셨고, 우리의 저주를 대신 짊어지시고 십자가에 죽으심으로 우리가 저주에서 해방되고 생명에 속하게 되었기 때문입니다. 이것이 예수님이 물과 피로 임하셨다는 말의 의미입니다. 물은 요한에게 물세례를 받으심으로 죄인의 운명에 들어오셨다는 뜻이고, 피는 우리를 자주에서 구출하기 위해 십자가에서 피 흘려 죽으신 것을 의미하는 것입니다.
영지주의는 육신을 악한 것으로 여겼기 때문에 인간이 어떻게 산다 해도 말씀을 깨닫기만 하면 구원을 받는다고 여겼습니다. 때문에 이들에게는 아들이 있다는 것이 중요한 것이 아니었고 가치 있는 것도 아니었습니다. 말씀을 깨닫기만 하면 구원의 모든 문제가 해결된다고 생각했기 때문입니다. 결국 이들은 자신의 깨달음을 믿을 뿐 하나님의 아들이신 예수를 믿는 것이 아니었기에 하나님의 사랑과 무관한 종교였을 뿐입니다.
예수가 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는다면 아들을 죄인 된 우리를 위해 버리신 하나님 아버지의 아픔과 사랑을 외면할 수 없습니다. 비록 우리가 세상을 살아가면서 때로 고통과 아픔을 겪게 되지만 그 또한 우리로 하여금 하나님의 아픔과 사랑으로 이끌어 가는 하나님의 일하심이라는 것을 안다면 자신의 현실에 실망하고 원망하기보다는 나 같은 자를 위해 아들을 버리신 하나님의 사랑을 생각하게 될 것입니다. 이것이 세상을 이기는 것입니다.
고전 15:57절에 보면 “우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 우리에게 승리를 주시는 하나님께 감사하노니”라고 말합니다.
하나님은 그리스도로 말미암아 이미 승리를 주셨습니다. 하나님의 아들이 있는 그가 승리한 자입니다. 그러므로 신자는 하나님께 힘을 달라고 할 이유가 없습니다. 승리하기 위해 사는 것이 아니라 승리한 자로 살기 때문입니다. 아들이 있는 자에게는 생명이 있습니다. 그러므로 아들을 믿는 믿음이 우리의 승리입니다.

Faith and Victory
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. (1st John 5:4-6 KJV)

It is inevitable to think that there are so many things twisted and misunderstood on faith in modern Christianity. Of all, there is a desire that faith brings prosperity and development for oneself in the world.
Although the Bible testifies us the invisible world and the life eternal, overcoming death, the desire of prosperity in this dead world makes people distorted and misled in the interpretation of the Bible.
There is 'triumphalism' as one of the misunderstandings. It is so prevalent that christians should be better than non-believers in prosperity by faith in terms of home management, business, raising children and so forth for the glory of God.
By such triumphalism, one preacher even said 'triple blessings', which is accepted as the will of God by many christians. Furthermore, there are so-called optimistic thoughts like 'I can do it' or 'there is nothing I cannot do by faith', which are disguised in the name of the will of God, sufficing triumphalists.
Those who pursue triumphalism and consider worldly prosperity as the result of faith would love to read verses like, "For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?(4-5)"
Does the victory that overcomes the world in the passage indeed mean prosperity and success in this world? If so, all believers are to be rich and successful. Those who are materially poor, in failures of business and sick are considered having no faith.
There are some preachers who really say such described above. They say low attendance of church meetings or failure of tithings can cause the loss of business and health. If anyone says that, I strongly believe that he is not a preacher at all.
If success were important in the world, God would make His children successful and rich, and non-believers losers and poor. Yet, Hebrews 6:9 says better things accompany salvation. Thus, the Bible doesn't say having power in the world is success, and it is not faith that one believes in Jesus to gain power to be stronger.
It might be true that to be stronger than others is good for the sake of the worldly life because it gives more to enjoy for oneself here on earth. For this reason, many christians are tempted by triumphalism. The words like success and victory sound more hopeful, optimistic and pleasing to ears than sin, curse and judgement.
Although triumph or victory sounds appealing, we ought to remember it ends in vain and false hope. Despite that, people are inclined more to listen to something that makes them hope and expect what they want in their burdened reality, which is well-used by false preachers.
Then, what does 'victory' mean in the passage we read? According to the verse, faith makes believers overcome the world and victors. However, the victory here doesn't mean to gain power. Let us take a look at it more.
The straight interpretation of the passage is that people born of God overcome the world by faith. In other words, faith, which is to believe in Christ, is the victory that overcomes the world. It is vouched by Verse 5, "Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?"
Does the meaning of the victory sound too frivolous to you? Many would like to consider faith as a way to get what they want: salvation and earthly blessings. Yet, this is a huge misconception, not knowing that one has already received better things from God by believing in Jesus, which overcomes the world. Then, One is only captured by one's covetousness, wishing, 'I can get whatever I want by faith.'
As I told you earlier, belonging to salvation is better. It means there is nothing better than that, which means that those who are saved have better things that overcome the world and can be called victors. But, the thing is that this truth is even ignored by many christians probably due to the fact that the truth can never be recognized in the world as valuable.
Yet, there is no wonder that the world never recognizes the value of salvation because it only values what is visible and tangible. The fact that being aware of the value of salvation proves one as the victor over the world since it can be seen only by the children of God.
Even though it is true that it sounds graceful, it is also known that it seems unrealistic. Who would dare to say that living by faith is to overcome the world, which is governed by the power of money and materialism?
We can't deny that money seems to overcome faith, not the other way, in our reality. Even modern Christianity is in many ways entangled by that.
In our daily lives, faith sounds not more than ideal, but money comes to us what is practical. It is because our living on earth requires money not faith. Yet, our life here is limited. When we physically die, the pendulum swings the other way. All the matters of power and money momentarily disappear. It is faith that spans even after death.
In Verse 11 and 12, "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life."
According to the verses, those who overcome the world are the ones who have the Son of God. Since the Son has the life, those who have the Son have the life. The true value of the life is revealed at the moment we die, not while physically living.
No matter what kind of life one has, in other words, even if one were the richest man in the world, when the physical life comes to an end, the better things are to have the Son and the salvation will valuably be seen. The reality that having lived by believing in the Son is to have overcome the world will be exposed. Thus, we can say that living to gain power on earth is the way to walk as total losers.
In Verses 6 through 8, "This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one."
The verses are spoken because there was a heretic group, called, 'Gnostics' those days. Gnosticism divides flesh and spirit, saying flesh is evil and spirit is good; consequently, they denied Jesus in flesh, concluding that Jesus as God can't have flesh, which is evil.
Yet, if He hadn't come to the world in flesh, He would have had nothing to do with us, who are sinners. He came in flesh, entering into the destiny of sinners, who deserve nothing but the eternal curse, and He took our position as the Substitute and died on the cross, liberating us from sin and giving us the eternal life. This is He that came by water and blood. Water means that through the baptism by John the Baptist, He entered into the destiny of sinners, and blood means that He died on the cross to free us from sin.
Gnostics thought as long as they were saved through the understanding of the Word of God, how to live in the world was not a problem because they deemed all flesh was evil. Thus, for such, having the Son was neither important nor valuable because they thought understanding the Word of God was everything for their salvation. They believed in their own understanding, not the Son of God, proven that the group had nothing to do with the love of God.
If one believes in the Son of God, one can't neglect the pain and love of God the Father, who forsook His Son for sinners. No doubt we experience sufferings and afflictions time to time, but if we know these are the work of God, who leads us to the heart of God, we will come to appreciate the love of His forsaking the Son even more instead of being disappointed about our reality. This is what I call, 'overcoming the world.'
In 1st Corinthians 15:57, "But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
God has already given us the victory through the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who have the Son are the victors. Thus, believers absolutely have no reason to ask God for more power because they are living as victors in the world, not to be victors. We who have the Son have the eternal life. Therefore, faith, which makes us believe in the Son, is our victory!
