신자는 매 주일 예배당에 와서 예배를 드립니다. 대예배로 불리는 주일 오전예배를 포함해서 오후예배, 수요일예배, 거기에 새벽예배와 여러 행사로 인한 예배를 포함하면 소위 신앙에 열심이 있다는 분들은 몇 번의 예배를 매주 드리게 됩니다. 그런데 그토록 많은 예배를 드리면서 ‘예배가 무엇인가?’에 대한 생각을 해 보신 적은 있습니까?
예배가 무엇인가에 대해서는 24절의 “하나님은 영이시니 예배하는 자가 영과 진리로 예배할지니라”는 말씀으로 답을 내릴 수 있습니다. 하지만 이 말씀이 분명하게 다가오기는 쉽지 않습니다. ‘영과 진리로 예배를 드린다’는 것이 무슨 의미인지에 대한 이해가 없는 것이 이유일 수도 있지만, 무엇보다 예배에 대한 기존의 생각에 막혀 있기 때문이라고 할 수 있습니다.
아마 예배당에서 예배를 드리는 사람이라면 누구나 자신이 믿음으로 예배를 드린다고 생각할 것입니다. 사회자인 목사의 인도를 따라 주보에 정해진 순서대로 기도하고 찬송하고 설교를 들으면서 그것을 믿음으로 드리는 예배로 생각하는 것입니다. 그리고 예배의 은혜는 전적으로 자신을 중심하여 판단합니다. 예배로 인한 자기감정과 기분으로 은혜의 여부를 판단하는 것입니다. 하지만 영과 진리의 예배는 이 모든 것과 무관하다는 것을 알아야 합니다.
본문은 예수님께서 사마리아의 수가라는 동네에 있는 우물에서 한 여인을 만나 대화한 내용 중의 일부입니다. 대화중에서 23,24절을 보면 “아버지께 참되게 예배하는 자들은 영과 진리로 예배할 때가 오나니 곧 이 때라 아버지께서는 자기에게 이렇게 예배하는 자들을 찾으시느니라 하나님은 영이시니 예배하는 자가 영과 진리로 예배할지니라”고 말씀하십니다.
하나님께서는 ‘이렇게’예배하는 자들을 찾으신다고 하는데, ‘이렇게’가 의미하는 것은 ‘영과 진리’라는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 따라서 하나님이 영광 진리로 예배하는 자들을 찾으신다면 영과 진리로 예배하는 것만이 참된 예배이고, 영과 진리로 예배하는 그들이 곧 하나님의 백성으로 간주된다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
그렇다면 영과 진리로 예배하는 자들은 과연 존재할까요? 하나님이 그들을 찾으신다고 하셨으니 그것은 곧 존재한다는 의미일 것입니다. 하지만 한 가지 짚어야 할 것은 과연 ‘인간이 영광 진리로 하나님을 예배하는 것이 가능 하는가?’입니다. 죄로 인해 더러워진 것이 인간인데 그러한 인간이 영과 진리로 하나님을 예배하는 것이 가능할까요? 불가능합니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 영광 진리로 예배하는 자들을 찾으신다는 것은 어떻게 이해해야 할까요?
영과 진리는 인간의 소관이 아닙니다. 인간이 모든 정성과 노력을 동원한다 해도 영과 진리의 수준에 도달할 수 없습니다. 그럼에도 영과 진리로 예배할 때가 오게 되고 영과 진리로 예배하는 자들을 찾으신다는 것은 그 모든 일을 예수님이 이루시기 위해 오셨다는 뜻으로 이해할 수 있습니다. 다시 말해서 예수님에 의해서 영광 진리로 예배하는 자들이 있게 되는 것이고 그들이 하나님이 준비하신 하나님의 백성들이기에 그들을 찾으신다는 것입니다.
먼저 본문의 내용 앞에 등장하는 사마리아 여인과 예수님의 대화를 보면 예수님이 사마리아 여인에게 남편을 불러 오라 하시고 여인은 남편이 없다고 답합니다. 예수님은 다시 남편이 없다는 말이 옳다고 하시면서 “너에게 남편 다섯이 있었고 지금 있는 자도 네 남편이 아니니 네 말이 참되도다”(18절)고 말씀합니다. 이 여인은 한 남자로 만족하지 못하고 이 남자, 저 남자 갈아치우는 창녀와 같았습니다. 그렇다 할지라도 예수님의 말씀은 여인의 치부를 드러내는 것이었고 여인으로서는 수치스러움에 화를 낼 수 있는 상황이었습니다.
그런데 여인은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 “주여 내가 보니 선지자로소이다”라고 말합니다. 선지자는 하나님의 말씀으로 백성의 죄를 책망하고 심판을 선포하는 역할을 했습니다. 그렇게 보면 여인은 자신의 더러움을 알고 드러내는 예수님에게서 선지자적인 모습을 보게 된 것입니다.
예수님과 여인의 대화의 시작은 물의 문제였습니다. 그리고 그 대화는 “내가 주는 물을 마시는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리니 내가 주는 물은 그 속에서 영생하도록 솟아나는 샘물이 되리라”(14절)는 말씀으로 이어집니다. 여인은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 “주여 그런 물을 내게 주사 목마르지도 않고 또 여기 물 길으러 오지도 않게 하옵소서”(15절)라고 말합니다.
예수님이 말씀한 물을 다시는 목마르지 않게 하는 신비한 효능이 있는 물로 생각한 것입니다. 그러한 물이 있으면 번거롭게 물을 길으러 올 필요가 없다고 생각한 것은 자신의 생활의 편리를 중점에 둔 것이고, 그것이 말씀의 의도에서 벗어난 것입니다. 그래서 예수님은 여인을 참된 말씀의 세계로 이끄시기 위해 남편 이야기를 언급하셔서 죄를 드러내신 것입니다.
예수님과 사마리아 여인의 대화는 곧 예수님과 우리의 대화이기도 합니다. 만약 예수님이 우리 앞에 계시고 대화를 한다면 과연 무슨 이야기를 할까요? 남북문제 이야기를 하겠습니까? 아니면 야구 이야기를 하겠습니까? 그러한 것들은 예수님의 관심사가 아닙니다. 예수님과 대화한다면 대화의 소통은 죄 문제에 있습니다.
그렇다면 성경이 여러분과 소통될 수 있는 것은 죄 문제에 있다고 말하는 것이 맞습니다. 성경은 예수 그리스도에 대한 말씀이고 예수 그리스도의 말씀입니다. 성경이 예수님을 말할 때는 죄가 등장하지 않을 수 없습니다. 세상의 죄로 인해 이 땅에 오셨고 십자가에 피 흘려 죽으셨기 때문입니다. 그런데 성경이 죄에 대해 말하는 것을 거북스러워 할 수 있을까요? 자신의 죄가 드러나는 것을 용납하지 않으면서 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 은혜 받았다고 할 수 있을까요? 아닙니다. 죄를 가린 상태에서 말하는 모든 것은 위선이고 거짓일 뿐입니다.
여인은 예수님을 선지자로 알아보면서 “우리 조상들은 이 산에서 예배하였는데 당신들의 말은 예배할 곳이 예루살렘에 있다 하더이다”(20절)라고 말합니다. 여인이 갑자기 예배에 관한 이야기를 하는 이유가 무엇일까요? 그것은 예배를 죄를 씻기 위한 통로로 보기 때문으로 이해할 수 있습니다. 예수님이 죄 문제를 드러내셨기에 죄를 해결할 수 있는 통로로 예배를 생각한 것입니다.
그런데 문제는 예배 장소입니다. 사마리아에는 그리심 산이라는 예배 장소가 있습니다. 그리고 유대인들에게는 예루살렘에 성전이 있습니다. 이 둘 중에 어디에서 예배하는 것이 하나님이 받으시는 참된 예배가 되어 자신의 죄를 씻을 수 있는지를 알고 싶어 한 것으로 이해할 수 있습니다.
예수님은 “여자여 내 말을 믿으라 이 산에서도 말고 예루살렘에서도 말고 너희가 아버지께 예배할 때가 이르리라”(21절)고 말씀하심으로 예배는 고정된 장소가 필요한 것이 아님을 가르치십니다. 예배를 드리기 위해서는 어떤 장소로 가야 한다는 고정된 생각을 무너뜨리는 것입니다.
그러면 영과 진리로 드리는 예배는 무엇일까요? 23절에서 말씀한 ‘이 때’는 예수님이 오셔서 하늘의 비밀을 전파하시고 십자가에 죽으시는 모든 것을 포함한 의미의 말입니다. 따라서 예수님이 오시기 전에 영과 진리로 드리는 참된 예배는 없었다는 뜻이 됩니다. 왜냐하면 하나님이 받으시는 참된 예배는 대제사장 되신 예수님이 자기 몸을 제물 삼아 피 흘려 하나님께 드린 것만 유일하기 때문입니다. 그렇다면 참된 예배는 우리의 의식이 아니라 예수 그리스도 안에서만 가능한 것입니다.
하나님은 우리가 담당해야 할 저주와 죽음을 예수님에게 짊어지게 하셨습니다. 그러므로 예수님이 자기 몸을 제물로 드리신 십자가 앞에서 우리는 저주와 죽음 아래 있는 존재일 뿐입니다. 따라서 예수님 앞에는 복 받을 자가 아니라 영원한 저주와 죽음에 붙들리는 것이 당연한 자로 나와야 합니다. 그럴 때 예수님의 피가 우리를 저주와 죽음에서 해방 시켰다는 사실이 복과 진리로 다가오게 되는 것입니다.
성령이 우리에게 오셔서 하시는 일은 ‘죄로 인해 죽은 자’라는 선포입니다. 진리 또한 우리가 죽은 자임을 증거합니다. 그러므로 신자가 영과 진리 아래 있다면 그 증거는 ‘나는 죄로 인해 죽은 자이며 죄인의 괴수일 뿐입니다. 나를 불쌍히 여기소서’라는 고백으로 드러나게 됩니다. 그리고 우리를 죽음에서 건져 주신 하나님의 긍휼과 은혜에 기뻐하고 감사하게 됩니다. 이것이 영과 진리로 드리는 참된 예배입니다. 하나님은 자기 백성에게 믿음을 주셔서 이러한 참된 예배가 가능하게 하시고 그들을 찾으시는 것입니다.
히 11:4절에 보면 아벨은 믿음으로 가인보다 더 나은 제사를 드렸다고 말합니다. 아벨은 양의 첫 새끼와 기름을 드렸습니다. 기름이 그리스도를 뜻한다는 것을 생각하면 아벨의 제사에는 장차 그리스도로 인해 구원 받게 됨을 보여주는 것이 됩니다. 이것을 믿음으로 드린 제사로 말하는 것입니다.
영과 진리는 우리를 십자가로 끌어갑니다. 그리고 내가 누구인가를 보게 합니다. 죄로 인해 죽은 자임을 보게 하시고 죽음이 마땅한 내가 무엇으로 인해 살았고 존재하는가를 보게 함으로 하나님의 긍휼과 용서의 은혜 앞에 무릎 꿇게 합니다. 이러한 영과 진리의 예배가 충만하기를 바랍니다.
Chapter 38
Faith and Worship
The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.(John 4:19-24)

Believers worship at places of worship for their assembly every Lord's day, including morning meetings, afternoon services, Wednesday Bible studies, and even special meetings. It will be more than several times of worship a week for earnest people. However, while worshipping God that much, have you ever seriously come to think of the meaning of 'worship' in the Bible?
What worship means can be defined in the verse 24 of John Chapter 4, saying, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." But this verse is so unclear that we can't grasp in the meaning. It is because not only do we have no understanding of 'worship in spirit and in truth', but we get nowhere due to our common sense of worship that is unbiblical, already built in our mind strongly.
No one would doubt that one is worshiping while participating the church services. People would think participating worship meetings is to worship God, following all the orders and contents while judging the grace of worship on their own, which means they evaluate whether they are touched by the service or not, solely according to their emotional movements. But, we have to admit that 'worship in spirit and in truth' has nothing to do with this described above.
The passage we read is a part of our Lord's conversation with a Samaritan woman at the well. Looking at the verses 23 and 24, "the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."
God seeks for those who worship in such manner. 'Such' indicates 'in spirit and in truth.' Thus, we can come to conclude that if God seeks those people, the true meaning of worship is to worship in spirit and in truth only and only those who worship in that manner are considered children of God.
Now, are there people who worship in spirit and in truth? Do they ever exist? Yes, they do, as the verse said God is looking for them. At this moment, however, we must ask ourselves if it is possible for us to worship 'in spirit and in truth.' Since we still have sinful nature in us, is it really possible? Nay! Impossible! Then, how do we have to understand God seeking for those?
'Spirit and truth' do not belong to human arena. No matter how hard we try to do, we can never reach at truth and spirit on our own. Nevertheless, the reason why the Lord said that the hour comes and God is seeking those who worship in spirit and in truth is, we could understand, that Jesus came to fulfill all these things by Himself. In other words, the Lord makes the people who worship in spirit and in truth, and they are the children of God that God is seeking for.
In the passage of the conversation between the Lord and the Samaritan woman, He asked her to bring Him her husband and she said she didn't have one. The Lord replied she was right, saying, "For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly." It revealed that she was a woman who was not satisfied with one husband like a prostitute. Jesus exposed her extreme shame that she always wanted to hide deep inside of her heart. The shame that was exposed by Him could have made her infuriated against Him.
Unexpectedly, however, she said to Him, "I persist thou are a prophet." A prophet is the one, sent by God to rebuke sins of people of God and judge them with the Word of God. In this sense, she saw a character of a prophet from Jesus, knowing who she is and revealing her sin.
The Lord and the woman began their conversation with the matter of drinking water. This moves onto the following; But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. After she heard Him say this, she said, "Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw."
She understood in the way that He could give her some kind of special water that she wouldn't be thirsty again physically, meaning that she was focusing on her comfortable and convenient life, not needing to come to the well for water. This can show us that her heart is totally strange to the Word of God. That's why the Lord is revealing her sin in order to lead her to the true way of the Word of God.
The Lord's conversation with her is no difference with us today. If Jesus were in front of us, what do you think He would say to us? Political issues, or sports games? None of them is His interest at all. It would be of sin in the communication.
Consequently, it is true to say that whenever the Bible is opened and read to us, there is a sin issue for the Word of God to communicate with us. It is of Jesus Christ and His Word itself. It is impossible for the Bible to tell us Jesus without dealing with sin because He came to the sin of the world and died for it. Then, can we feel uncomfortable to hear this? Can we say we have received grace from hearing the Word of God while refusing to be exposed of sin? No! If any preaching or teaching Bible with an intention of covering or conniving sin, it is just hypocrisy, falsehood or blindness!
Sensing He is a prophet, she said, "Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." Why do you think she so suddenly brought the issue of worship? It could be said that she perceived worship is a way to be forgiven of sin. Since the Lord revealed her sin, she wanted to solve the problem of her sin through worship.
But, the place of worship mattered. There was a worshipping place in Samaria, called 'Mount Gerizim.' For Judah, it was Jerusalem. It is probable that she wanted to know the place to be forgiven of her sin.
Then, the Lord said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father", telling her that a place doesn't matter for worship. He destroyed her idea of worship.
What is to worship in spirit and truth, then? In verse 23, 'this hour' means everything including His coming to the world, preaching the revelation of heaven, and dying on the cross. Therefore, what He is saying to her is that there is no true worship before He had come for God would receive the only true worship with Jesus Christ, the High Priest, sacrificing Himself, shedding His blood! If so, it is not a matter of us doing worship but the true worship is only possible in Jesus Christ. God the Father had His Son carry all the curse and death that we should have received! Thus, only if we come to Him not as the ones who deserve to receive blessings but the ones who recognize that we deserved to receive the curse and death, the blood of Jesus Christ will be realized as the truth and blessing for the emancipation from the curse and eternal death.
The Work of the Holy Spirit is to proclaim the fact that we have died of sin. The truth, as well, testifies that we are dead in sinful nature, which dwells in us as long as our flesh is concerned. Therefore, when believers are under the Spirit and truth, they prove their current situation by confessing, "I am dead of sin and mere chief of sinners. Mercy upon me, Lord!" And they are the only ones who can come to give thanks for His mercy and grace to God who have saved them from the condemnation. This is how to worship God in spirit and in truth! God gives faith to His own people, makes this worship enabled in them and seeks for them. How marvelous our God is! This is beyond our human mind and ability!
In Hebrew 11:4, Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain. Abel brought the firstlings of his flock and the fat. When we consider 'the fat' Christ, his worship shows us the salvation through Him for the time to come. This is called 'worshipping by faith.'
The Holy Spirit and truth always draw us to the cross and let us see who we are. In spirit and in truth, we come to see how sinful we are and what indeed made us live in Christ, making us kneel bow down before the compassion of God and the forgiveness of His grace. In addition, if it is the true meaning of worship, why do we have to meet at places of worship? It is because we are to share this love and grace that we have received by faith while being awareness of our sinful nature and destiny that would have ended up being in hell unless Jesus Christ had been intervened by God the Father. I hope the fullness of such worship, in spirit and in truth, will enrich your daily walk with Christ!
