2.영생의 소망을 위함이라 이 영생은 거짓이 없으신 하나님이 영원 전부터 약속하신 것인데
3.자기 때에 자기의 말씀을 전도로 나타내셨으니 이 전도는 우리 구주 하나님이 명하신 대로 내게 맡기신 것이라
4.같은 믿음을 따라 나의 참 아들 된 디도에게 편지하노니 하나님 아버지와 그리스도 예수 우리 구주로부터 은혜와 평강이 네게 있을지어다

전도에 대해 말할 때 먼저 연결 고리를 끊어야 하는 것은 교회 성장입니다. 교회가 전도를 강조하는 이유가 교회 성장을 위해서라는 것을 부인할 수 없는데 정작 성경에서 말하는 전도는 교회 성장과는 전혀 무관하기 때문입니다. 그런 점에서 보면 현대 교회가 말하는 전도가 성경의 의미에서 벗어나 전혀 다른 방향으로 흘러가는 것은 교회 성장이라는 고리를 끊지 못했기 때문이라고 할 수 있습니다.
결국 교회 성장을 향한 목사의 욕망에 의해 전도가 하나님이 요구하시는 신자의 사명이라는 명목과 함께 반드시 실천해야 할 법으로 강조되면서 신자에게 무거운 짐으로 안겨지는 것이 현대 교회의 실상이라고 할 수 있습니다. 흔히 ‘전도가 잘 된다. 안된다’라는 말을 하기도 하는데 그 의미가 교인 수가 늘고 늘지 않는 것에 있음을 생각한다면 분명 한국교회는 전도에 대해 성경에서 벗어난 이해를 하고 있다고 말할 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 예수님도 사도도 교인 수의 확장에 의미를 둔 전도를 말하지 않았기 때문입니다.
전도는 말 그대로 도를 전하는 것이고 도는 십자가 복음을 뜻합니다. 이 말에 의의를 걸 사람은 없을 것입니다. 그렇다면 물어야 하는 것은 과연 십자가 복음이 사람을 교회로 오게 하는데 효과적인가 하는 것입니다.
사도 바울은 갈 5:11절에서 “형제들아 내가 지금까지 할례를 전한다면 어찌하여 지금까지 박해를 받으리요 그리하였으면 십자가의 걸림돌이 제거되었으리니”라고 말합니다.
십자가로 인해 박해를 받는다는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 십자가는 사람들에게 거북하고 듣기 싫은 말로 다가오기 때문입니다. 그런데 십자가의 도를 전하는 전도가 교회를 성장하게 할 것으로 생각한다면 그것은 모든 사람들이 거부하지 않고 박해 없는 십자가 아닌 십자가를 알고 있는 결과입니다.
3절에 보면 “자기 때에 자기의 말씀을 전도로 나타내셨으니 이 전도는 우리 구주 하나님이 명하신 대로 내게 맡기신 것이라”고 말합니다.
하나님의 전도는 말씀을 세상에 나타내신 것인데 그것은 그리스도의 오심을 말합니다. 자기 백성을 찾으시기 위해 예수님을 보내신 것이 하나님의 전도입니다. 그렇다면 하나님의 전도로 인해 믿는 사람이 많아지고 교회가 세상 곳곳에 세워졌을까요? 아닙니다. 예수님을 십자가에 못박아 죽이는 것으로 세상은 하나님의 전도를 받아들이지 않음을 드러내었을 뿐입니다.
사도는 이 전도를 하나님이 자신에게 맡기셨다고 말합니다. 그렇다면 우리가 말하는 것처럼 전도의 사명을 맡은 사도가 갈 길은 말씀으로 오신 예수님이 가신 고난의 길입니다. 이것이 전도의 길이기 때문에 전도를 교회 성장과 연결하는 것은 결코 불가하다고 할 수 있습니다.
전도의 의미는 하나님 나라 전파에 있습니다. 하지만 교회를 하나님 나라라고 생각하지는 마십시오. 하나님 나라는 어떤 지역이나 장소에 고정되어 있는 교회가 아니라 하나님의 말씀에 의해 다스림 받는 하나님의 백성들을 뜻하기 때문입니다. 그 백성들을 찾기 위해 십자가의 도가 전파되는 것이고, 십자가의 도가 전파되게 하셔서 자기 백성을 찾으시는 것이 하나님의 일하심이기 때문에 결국 전도는 하나님이 하신다는 결론을 내릴 수 있습니다.
어떤 사람은 전도가 하나님 나라를 확장한다고 말하기도 합니다. 여기서 말하는 확장이라는 말의 의미가 무엇인지 잘 알 수 있습니다. 교인 수, 교회수의 증가를 하나님 나라의 확장으로 말하는 것입니다. 하지만 이것은 기독교 세력, 교회 세력이 확장되는 것을 하나님 나라 확장이라는 명목으로 미화하는 것 밖에 되지 않습니다.
하나님 나라 확장이 그처럼 양적 확장을 의미하는 것이라면 양적으로 미미한 것은 하나님 나라로서 불완전하다는 느낌을 줄 수 있습니다. 하나님 나라는 계속 자라가야 한다는 말도 다르지 않습니다. 계속 자라가야 한다면 늘 현재는 미완성이고 부족하다는 뜻이 됩니다. 하지만 하나님 나라는 완성되었고 충만의 상태이기 때문에 확장되어야 하거나 채워야 할 것이 없습니다. 그러므로 하나님 나라 확장을 위한 전도 또한 성경이 말하지 않음을 알아야 합니다.
이처럼 전도가 무엇이고 전도의 의미가 무엇인가를 안다면 현대 교회에서 행해지고 있는 전도의 실상에서 무엇이 문제인가를 분명히 알게 될 것입니다. 무엇보다 전도는 훈련으로 되는 것이 아님을 알게 됩니다.
그러면 교회는 어떤 전도에 힘을 써야 할까요? 앞서 말씀드린 것처럼 하나님의 전도는 말씀이신 그리스도를 보내신 것이고, 그 전도를 사도에 맡겼으며 사도가 전한 복음을 받아들이고 사도가 간 길로 가는 우리에게 맡겨졌음을 잊지 않아야 합니다. 그 전도는 간단합니다. 복음을 복음 그대로 전파하는 것입니다. 자신의 유익과 욕망이 걸러지면서 십자가에 못 박힌 예수님의 피의 은혜를 전하는 것이 우리에게 맡겨진 전도입니다.
여러분이 교회로 모여서 알게 된 것이 있고 여러분께 전파된 것이 있다면 그것은 복음이어야 합니다. 교회에 대한 생각으로 교회를 어떻게 만들 것인가에 관심을 두게 된다면 그것은 여러분께 복음이 전파되지 않았다는 증거라 할 것입니다. 하지만 여러분께 복음이 전파되었다면 여러분에게서 나와지는 것은 복음일 것입니다. 복음에 의해 다스려지면서 복음이 내용으로 하고 있는 예수님의 피의 은혜, 우리를 구원하신 하나님의 사랑과 자비를 증거하게 되는 것입니다. 이것이 전도입니다.
따라서 전도를 어떤 방법, 활동, 실천으로 생각하기보다는 복음으로 사는 것으로 생각하시기 바랍니다. 어쩌면 이 말이 가장 쉬운 말이면서도 어렵게 들릴 수 있습니다. 우리는 산다는 것을 특별한 행함의 실천으로 생각하는 경향이 많기 때문입니다. 하지만 제가 말씀 드릴 것은 그냥 복음으로 사시라는 것입니다. 그것이 무엇인가는 여러분이 계속 복음 안에서 알아가야 하는 문제일 것입니다.
노아는 누구의 눈치도 보지 않고 방주를 만들었습니다. 그것이 노아의 전도입니다. 노아가 방주를 만든 것은 오늘 우리가 심판에서의 구원을 생각하며 그리스도를 믿는 것입니다. 그해서 복음으로 살라는 것은 그리스도를 믿으라는 것과 같습니다. 그것이 여러분께 맡겨진 전도입니다.

Faith and Preaching
Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

In speaking of what preaching is, we must disconnect it from church growth. It can't be denied that the reason preachers often emphasize on evangelizing is for church growth but preaching in the Bible has nothing to do with church growth at all. In this sense, modern Christianity is going astray with the meaning of preaching because it always links to church growth.
It is reality of modern Christianity that preachers' greed for church growth is disguised with a doctrine that believers must be burdened in the name of the will of God. We often hear, 'evangelization works well nowadays', or 'it doesn't', which means, 'the number of church members is increasing', or 'it is staying.' All of those expressions are non-sense in the Bible because Jesus and the Apostles never mentioned preaching in that sense.
Preaching or evangelizing means, as it is spoken, 'delivering or proclaiming the gospel.' I am sure nobody will deny it. Then, what we must ask ourselves is if preaching the gospel of the cross is an effective way to gather people to buildings.
Apostle Paul says in Galatians 5:11, "And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased."
He is saying he is suffering persecution for preaching the cross because people are disgusted to hear preaching the gospel of the cross. However, if preachers think preaching the gospel is a way of church growth, they must have the false-cross, which has no opposition nor persecution.
In Verse 3, "But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour."
Preaching of God is to manifest His Word, which means, 'Coming of Jesus Christ.' To have sent His Son in order to seek for His people is preaching of God. Then, were many believers added to church and were many church gathering places built? No way! Crucifying Jesus reveals that the world didn't want to receive preaching of God!
The Apostle says he was committed to preaching of God. As we have spoken, the road of the Apostle with the commitment to walk is the agony that the Lord walked. This is the way of preaching, whose reason, therefore, can never be related to church growth.
The meaning of preaching lies in the proclamation of Kingdom of Heaven; however, don't be confused church with Kingdom of Heaven because Kingdom of Heaven is not limited places in certain areas but the people of God, who are governed by the Word of God. The preaching of the cross is to seek for people of God, whose work is to make the cross of Jesus preached to find out His people; consequently, we can say that preaching is the work of God.
Some say preaching is a way to expand Kingdom of Heaven. We can easily understand the meaning of 'expand' here. It means the increase of the number of church members and gathering places, but it is just a mere excuse of human greed to expand their own religious power, using the expression, 'kingdom of heaven.'
If Kingdom of Heaven meant the amount, it would be seen weak and incomplete with low numbers, whose meaning could be said that Kingdom of Heaven must continue to be better. If so, Kingdom of Heaven would always be imperfect and lacking something. Yet, Kingdom of Heaven has already been completed and fulfilled, so there is no need to add or be better. Thus, we shouldn't forget that the Bible doesn't say preaching is a way to expand Kingdom of Heaven.
If we understand the meaning of preaching in a correct manner, we will come to see what the problem of preaching is done in modern Christianity. Utmost, preaching can't be developed by training.
Then, what should we focus on in terms of preaching? We mustn't forget that God's preaching is to have sent His Son, Jesus Christ, and commit it to the Apostle, whose preaching we receive, and we walk on the way where the Apostle walked. Preaching is simple, that is, to proclaim as it is. Preaching we are committed to is to put my own benefits and wants aside and to share His grace of the blood of the cross, where Jesus Christ was crucified.
If you have come to be preached and understand something when gathered, it must be the gospel. If you ever focus on how you should make your church gathering other than the gospel of Jesus Christ, it is an evidence that you haven't yet been preached. But if you have been preached, the outcome of you will be the gospel only, which means that being ruled by the gospel centering Jesus Christ, we testify the love and mercy of God, who has redeemed us by the blood of Christ. This is what I call 'preaching.'
According to what has been said, I want you to know that preaching is not something you have to do in certain ways, but it is to live with the content of the gospel itself. Although it sounds easy, it may be most difficult because we tend to think living for God is doing something special. Yet, I would like to say preaching is just living with the gospel. What it means is something that you should get to know while you are living in the gospel more.
Noah built the Ark regardless anyone's opinion. That was his preaching back then. Noah's building the Ark is believing in Christ while pondering His salvation from the judgement of God for us today. That's why I said living with the gospel is believing in Jesus Christ. This is the preaching we have been committed to.
