여러 소리가 동시에 들려도 한 소리가 유난히 잘 들리는 경우가 있습니다. 콜린 체리라는 사람은 이것을 두고 온갖 잡음이 섞인 칵테일 파티에서도 자신의 이름을 부르는 소리를 똑똑하게 들을 수 있는 것과 같다 하여‘칵테일 파티 효과’라고 이름 붙였습니다. 인간은 여러 소리가 동시에 들려도 자신이 듣고자 하는 소리는 들을 수 있다는 것입니다.
오늘날 칵테일 파티 효과는 자신이 관심 두고 있거나 의미 있는 정보만을 선택적으로 받아들이는 인간의 습성으로 설명되기도 합니다. 칵테일 파티 효과는 성경을 보고 듣는 기독교인에게서도 확연하게 드러납니다. 자신에게 의미 있는 내용만을 모아서 그것을 하나님이 하시는 일로 받아들이는 것입니다.
가령“이 율법책을 네 입에서 떠나지 말게 하며 주야로 그것을 묵상하여 그 안에 기록된 대로 다 지켜 행하라 그리하면 네 길이 평탄하게 될 것이며 네가 형통하리라”(수 1:8)는 내용을 보면서 사람들은 무엇을 생각할까요? 십중팔구 성경을 부지런히 읽고 묵상하며 성경대로 살고자 힘쓰면 하나님이 인생길을 평탄하게 하시고 형통한 삶을 살게 된다는 생각을 할 것입니다. 그것이 성경을 자신에게 의미 있는 내용으로 멋대로 해석하고 조작하는 것입니다.
이처럼 조작된 성경해석에 의한 하나님은 당연히 인간의 일을 돕는 신으로 증거될 것이고 하나님의 함께 하심 또한 인간을 돕고 재앙으로부터 지켜주며 소원을 이루어주기 위한 것으로 날조될 뿐입니다. 이것이 성경에서 듣고 싶은 것만 듣고 보고 싶은 것만 보려고 하는 인간의 습성이 활동하는 교회 현장이라는 점을 생각할 수 있어야 합니다.
28절에 보면 “모세가 여호와와 함께 사십 일 사십 야를 거기 있으면서 떡도 먹지 아니하였고 물도 마시지 아니하였으며 여호와께서는 언약의 말씀 곧 십계명을 그 판들에 기록하셨더라”라고 말합니다.
출 24장에 보면 모세가 율법과 계명이 기록된 돌판을 받기 위해 산에 올랐을 때도 사십 일 사십 야를 산에 있었습니다. 그때는 떡도 먹지 아니하였고 물도 마시지 않았다는 내용이 없는데 본문에서는 아무것도 먹지 않고 마시지 않았다고 말합니다. 말하자면 먹고 마시는 인간의 생존 욕구와 무관한 세계에 있었던 것입니다. 그것이 여호와와 함께 하는 것입니다.
여호와가 함께하신다는 것이 어떤 의미일까요? 여호와를 사랑이 많으시고 전지전능하신 분으로 생각하면서 우리의 어려움을 전능하신 능력으로 해결하시고 평안의 복된 인생을 살게 하시는 의미의 함께 하심으로 해석하는 경향이 많습니다. 이것이 자신이 듣고 싶은 내용대로 성경을 해석하는 것입니다.
모세가 여호와와 함께 하고 있는 시내산 꼭대기를 생각해 보십시오. 사십 일 사십 야를 먹지도 마시지도 않았는데 모세는 먹을 것과 마실 것을 달라고 하지 않습니다. 모세가 사십일을 먹지 않고 마시지 않아도 버틸 수 있는 체질을 가졌기 때문이 아닙니다. 먹을 것 마실 것이 없어도 사는 다른 세상에 있는 것입니다. 그것이 여호와의 함께 하심입니다.
하나님이 모세를 산 위로 올라오게 하신 것은 먹을 것 마실 것으로 사는 생존의 세계가 아닌 생명이라는 다른 세계를 경험하게 하는 것입니다. 그리고 생명의 세계는 먹을 것 마실 것 때문에 원망한 산 아래의 세계와는 교통 될 수 없는 단절된 관계에 있음을 모세 외에는 누구도 산에 올라오는 것을 허락하지 않으심으로 보여주십니다.
27절에 보면 “여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 너는 이 말들을 기록하라 내가 이 말들의 뜻대로 너와 이스라엘과 언약을 세웠음이니라 하시니라”고 말씀합니다.
하나님은 모세와 이스라엘과 언약을 세우셨고 언약의 말씀인 십계명을 돌판에 기록하여 모세에게 주십니다. 단지 돌판을 주시는 것이 모세를 산으로 부른 이유라면 사십 일을 산에 있어야 할 이유가 없습니다. 그런데 굳이 먹지 않고 마시지 않은 상태로 사십 일 사십 야를 산에 머무르게 하신 이유가 무엇일까요? 그것은 하나님이 주신 언약의 말씀은 이스라엘의 먹고 사는 문제, 즉 생존에 도움이 되는 말씀으로 주어진 것이 아님을 나타내는 것입니다.
인간은 모든 것을 자신의 생존에 도움이 되는 것으로 받아들이고 활용하는 습성이 있습니다. 하나님이 주시는 율법을 그러한 습성으로 받아들이기 때문에‘율법을 잘 지키고 행하면 하나님이 복을 주시고 편안하게 잘 살게 하신다’는 의미로 해석하는 것입니다. 하지만 우리의 생존 문제를 돕고 해결해주는 하나님은 인간이 만들어 낸 우상일 뿐입니다. 모세가 시내산에서 함께 했고 언약의 말씀을 주신 하나님이 아닌 것입니다.
시내산에서 하나님이 모세에게 주신 것은 언약의 말씀이 전부입니다. 즉 언약의 말씀이 생명이 되는 세계가 되는 것입니다. 따라서 언약의 말씀으로 알아가야 하는 것은 먹고 마시는 것으로 생존하는 세계가 아니라 죽어야 하는 자가 죽지 않은 생명의 세계가 있다는 것입니다. 이것을 알게 하시는 것이 하나님이 모세와 함께하신 이유입니다.
이러한 하나님의 뜻에 관심이 없고 다만 자신의 생존에만 마음을 두기 때문에 예수님이 세상에 오신 것도 인간의 생존을 돕기 위한 것으로 해석하는 것입니다. 이러한 인간이 말씀을 지킨다고 한들 하나님께 인정될 것은 아무것도 없습니다. 그런데도 자신이 지키고 실천하는 것에 의미를 두는 것은 인간 자체가 참으로 심각한 문제를 안고 있는 존재임을 보여주는 것입니다. 그런데도 그러한 문제를 알지 못하고 예수를 말한다면 그 믿음은 헛되고 거짓이라고 할 수밖에 없습니다.
모세가 여호와와 함께했던 시내산을 생각해 보십시오. 거기에는 산 아래 세상의 모습은 찾아볼 수 없습니다.“그러므로 염려하여 이르기를 무엇을 먹을까 무엇을 마실까 무엇을 입을까 하지 말라”(마 6:31)라는 말씀처럼 먹고 마시는 것 때문에 염려하고 구하는 것이 없습니다. 언약의 말씀이 전부가 되는 전혀 다른 세상입니다. 이러한 세상에 모세가 하나님의 부름을 받아 올라온 것처럼 우리 또한 하나님의 부르심으로 인해 말씀이신 그리스도가 전부가 되는 이 세상과는 전혀 다른 세상에 들어와 있는 것입니다.
그러면 어느 쪽이 진정으로 복의 세계라고 할 수 있을까요? 산 아래에는 이스라엘 백성들이 모여있습니다. 먹을 것과 마실 것이 있습니다. 산 위에는 아무것도 없습니다. 단지 여호와가 모세에게 함께 하시는 것이 전부입니다. 대신 산 아래에는 없는 언약의 말씀이 있습니다. 하지만 이스라엘은 산 위에 대해서는 관심이 없습니다. 먹고 마시는 것만 있으면 된다는 것이 그들의 사고입니다.
그런 이스라엘에게 모세가 돌판을 들고 내려오는 것은, 여호와가 함께했던 산 위의 세계를 알리는 것과 같습니다. 언약의 말씀을 전함으로써 말씀이 생명이 되는 새로운 세계를 증거 하는 것입니다. 그러한 의미에서 보면 예수님이 말씀으로 오시는 것도 생존이 전부인 세상에 그리스도가 하늘의 생명이 되시는 새로운 세상이 있음을 알리시는 것입니다. 그런데 하늘의 일에 관심 없는 인간이 생존을 위해 지켜왔던 자신들의 신앙 세계를 뒤엎는 예수께 분노하여 십자가에 못 박은 것입니다.
예수를 아는 참된 신자는 세상에는 존귀하고 가치 있는 것으로 인정하고 높일 것이 아무것도 없음을 아는 것으로 나타납니다. 여호와가 함께했던 시내산에서 가장 소중하고 존귀한 것이 언약의 말씀이었다면 지금 우리에게 소중하고 존귀한 것은 말씀으로 오셔서 언약을 성취하신 예수님입니다.
이러한 신자가 존재한다는 것이 놀라운 기적입니다. 제가 바라는 것은 우리가 이러한 기적의 증거물로 드러나는 것입니다. 먹고 마시는 것으로 사는 것이 아니라 주의 말씀이 살게 하는 세계에 눈을 뜨는 것입니다. 그래서 그 세계로 인해 감사하고 찬송하게 되는 참된 신자 됨에 소원을 두기를 바라는 것입니다.
하나님의 언약에 우리가 원하는 세상은 없습니다. 오히려 우리가 소중히 여겼던 것들이 가치 없는 것으로 드러나면서 하나님이 주신 말씀이 충만이 되는 세계로 이끌어 가시는 것이 하나님의 함께 하심입니다. 그래서 내가 원하는 가치 있는 것으로 나를 채우고자 하는 것이 아니라 하나님이 베푸신 것이 가치 있는 것이고 그것이 이미 충만으로 나에게 함께 하심을 알게 되는 것이 복의 상태입니다. 그리고 우리에게 충만이 되어주기 위해 오신 분이 그리스도입니다.
예수 그리스도가 아니면 무엇을 먹고 마시든 심판으로 끝날 저주가 전부인 인생입니다. 그래서 그리스도를 모르는 자들이 먹고 마시는 것으로 저주가 전부인 인생을 자랑하지만 그리스도를 아는 신자는 그리스도만 자랑하게 됩니다. 그리스도에게서 생명을 보고 그 생명이 가장 존귀하다는 것을 알기 때문입니다.

With The Lord
And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.
And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. (Exodus 34:27-28 KJV)

We can often experience of hearing a particular sound over many different kinds of sounds. It is called ‘cocktail party effect’, defined by Colin Cherry, having discovered that we can clearly hear our name being called in a crowded party room. It is because of our selective listening skill.
It is also explained as our habit that we would like to select to hear what we want to hear. Such habitual act can be found among christians as well in reading and listening to the Word of God, choosing what we want from the Bible.
For example, what would we come to think of when we hear Joshua 1:8, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success”? Most would likely think, ‘if I make efforts to live for God as reading and obeying the Word of God, He will make my way successful.’ Such thought is fabricated by us, following what we want.
It would be all that God, in such thoughts, is the one helping our lives, protecting us from disasters and making our dreams come true. We ought to pay attention that this is our reality in church gatherings, selecting what we want to hear from the Bible.
In Verse 28, it says, “And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.”
We can also find Moses, having spent forty days and nights on the mount to receive the tablets of the covenant in Chapter 24. There, we don’t see Moses’s no eating or drinking, but here we see it. We learn, then, Moses was in the world, not needing of our survival, eating and drinking. This is ‘with the Lord.’
What does ‘with the Lord’ mean? We would tend to think God is love, omniscient and omnipotent, providing us with peaceful life. Yet, we should know such mind is of our selective listening.
Think of Moses, being with the Lord on the mount. He is not asking God for food or water even though he has been fasting for forty days and nights. It is not because he is strong enough to do so but he is in the world, not necessary to eat or drink. This is ‘with the Lord.’
God called Moses unto the mount not for the world of eat and drink but the world of the life. God teaches us the world of life is different from the world under the mount, complaining due to lack of water and food, by allowing only Moses to come up.
In Verse 27, it says, “And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.”
God establishes the covenant with Moses and Israel and gives Moses the Ten Commandments, written on the tablets. If giving Moses the tablets were the reason of God’s calling him, there would be no need of forty days and nights. Then, Why did God call him unto the mount, having no food or drink? It is because the Word of the Covenant is not for our earthly life, eating and drinking.
We have a strong tendency, receiving all things to make our life better on earth. Thus, we’d approach God-given law to obtain God’s blessings by obeying it hard. Yet, we must remember such God is nothing but man-made idol, different from God, who called Moses unto the mount.
The Word of God is all that God gave Moses on the mount. That is the world of the life in the Word of God. Thus, what we need to know in the Word of God is that we, who deserve to perish, are in His life, not in the world of eating and drinking for survival. This is the reason why God was with Moses on the mount for forty days and nights.
Since we are not interested in such will of God but our fleshly life, we would view Jesus as a helper of our life on earth. Thus, it is not wrong to say that there is nothing God would take from such people like us. Nevertheless, we would never give up on what we can do for God, telling us we are incorrigible before God. If we still seek Christ, not knowing who we are, it means our faith is false.
Think of Mount Sinai, where Moses spent time with God. There is no similarity of the world under the mountain. It is echoed by the Lord in Matthew 6:31, “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?” Moses was in a totally different world, where the Word of God is all for everything. Likewise, we have been called into the totally different world, where Jesus Christ is all.
Then, which one is truly blessing? Under the mount, there are the people of Israel, eating and drinking. On the mount, there is nothing except God and Moses. Instead, there is the Word of the Covenant. Yet, Israel are not interested in the world on the mount, thinking as long as they have food and water, it is enough for them.
Moses’s coming down to the people means to teach them the world on the mount. He preaches them the new world that the Word of the covenant is the life. In this sense, we learn that the coming of Jesus Christ is to tell us the new world of the heavenly life in the world, where eating and drinking is all. Yet, we, who are not interested in heaven, crucified Jesus because of the anger against Him, who destroyed our religious world.
Believers are revealed as they know there is nothing to value in the world of eating and drinking. As what was valued was the Word of the covenant on the mount, Jesus Christ, the Fulfiller of the covenant, is the most valuable to us today.
It is marvelous that such believers exist here on earth. I hope we are found in the surprise as the evidence of the miracle, opening eyes to see there is the world we can live by the Word of God, not by eating and drinking. I yearn to hear thanksgiving and praising for the world from our lips.
There is nothing that we want in the covenant of God. It is rather the work of God that He is leading us to the riches of the Word of God as He is revealing what we are pursuing is nothing but perishable. Blessed are they who know the satisfaction with what God has given, not what they want on earth. The satisfaction is Jesus Christ.
No matter what we eat or drink, we are nothing but doomed without Christ. Not knowing Him, people boast what they eat or drink in the world of curse, but Jesus Christ is the only one believers can boast because they know the value of the eternal life that is in Him, the Lord!
